Notting Hill Carnival
Notting Hill Carnival
Some weekends ask you to slow down. This one turns the volume up. Streets become dance floors, steel pans replace traffic noise, and the scent of Caribbean food follows every step. At Notting Hill Carnival, London"s roads don"t just close to traffic, they open to celebration.Desktop Version
Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
Set in Guatemala"s western highlands, Lake Atitlán fills a vast volcanic caldera. Its deep blue waters are framed by steep crater walls and the cone-shaped volcanoes Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro. Wooden piers stretch into the still lake, emphasising the contrast between its calm surface and the rugged terrain shaped by volcanic activity.Desktop Version
Plains zebra foal in Etosha National Park, Namibia
Plains zebra foal in Etosha National Park, Namibia
Etosha National Park, Namibia, is not a place for soft starts, and the plains zebra foal in this image seems to get the memo. In a land this vast—nearly 8,600 square miles of salt pans and grassland—timing is everything, and hesitation is expensive. Lions, spotted hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs and leopards constantly pressure the herd—especially the youngest—so zebras are born ready. Minutes after arrival, they"re upright. Hours later, they"re moving.Desktop Version
Pollinator Week
Pollinator Week
Zoom in on the small transaction that keeps landscapes alive: a butterfly on a yellow flower, sipping nectar. While it feeds, pollen dusts its body and hitches a ride to the next bloom—one of the quiet ways flowering plants reproduce. Pollinators are not only bees. Butterflies, birds, bats, beetles and many others help move pollen, supporting wild plants and many of the fruits and vegetables we eat.Desktop Version

European bee-eater in Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, Cádiz, Spain
A streak of colour glides past a blur of wildflowers as a European bee-eater cuts through the air. Turquoise, gold and chestnut shimmer across its wings as it hunts in flight, snatching insects mid-air with swift turns. Bees and wasps are among its favoured prey, and the bird often removes the stinger before feeding—a behaviour that reduces the risk of injury.Desktop Version
World Rainforest Day
World Rainforest Day
22 June is World Rainforest Day, a global moment and a year-round call to protect the world"s remaining rainforests. These ecosystems aren"t just dots on the map. They thrive across the tropics and beyond yet cover only about 6% of Earth"s surface. Think of the Amazon in South America, the Congo Basin in Africa and the forests of Southeast Asia.Desktop Version
Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
As night settles over Suwon, South Korea, the old city wall pictured here shows that function doesn"t necessarily cancel out beauty—it can create it. Built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Hwaseong Fortress was more than a barrier. It was policy in stone: a reform‑minded push for a leaner, better-run state, driven by practicality and a deeply personal motive. Jeongjo ordered its construction to honour his father while strengthening a kingdom that wanted smarter systems, not just thicker walls.Desktop Version

Arch and Milky Way, Alabama Hills, California, United States
In today"s image, the granite arches of the Alabama Hills frame the Milky Way over a rugged landscape in California"s eastern Sierra Nevada. Famous for its rounded boulders and weathered rock formations, this area formed when molten rock cooled deep underground around 100 million years ago. Water and wind gradually shaped the stone into the smooth shapes seen today. Visitors can explore the natural arches, hike among the rocks, capture photographs of the unique landscape, ride horses or mountain bikes and enjoy seasonal displays of wildflowers.Desktop Version
International Day of the Tropics
International Day of the Tropics

World Bee Day
World Bee Day
A soft buzz and a dusting of pollen can shape the future of our food. World Bee Day, observed each year on 20 May, celebrates pollinators like the bumble bee pictured here during its quiet yet essential work. Unlike many insects, bumble bees use "buzz pollination," vibrating their flight muscles to shake pollen from flowers—a method vital for crops such as tomatoes, peppers and blueberries.Desktop Version

Aerial view of land and ocean, Victoria, Australia
Victoria, a southeastern state of Australia, extends along more than 1,100 miles of mainland coastline shaped by the Southern Ocean. From above, its beaches appear as sweeping bands of pale sand edged by turquoise waters and rugged cliffs. This dynamic interaction of land and sea defines much of the region"s appeal. The famous Great Ocean Road traces roughly 150 miles of this shoreline, winding past popular surf spots, forested headlands and seaside towns.Desktop Version
World Bicycle Day
World Bicycle Day
Your average route to work might not resemble the one in today"s image, but it shouldn"t stop you from pedalling. World Bicycle Day invites us to rethink what"s possible on two wheels—whether the ride cuts through city streets or remote terrain. Observed every 3 June, the United Nations–backed day recognises cycling as a practical way to move, supporting health, lowering emissions and making mobility more accessible.Desktop Version
International Owl Awareness Day
International Owl Awareness Day
Owls take centre stage on International Owl Awareness Day, an annual observance highlighting their remarkable adaptations and worldwide distribution. Found on every continent except Antarctica, these birds are known for forward-facing eyes, flat facial discs that channel sound and specialised hearing. Many species hunt in near silence thanks to soft-edged feathers. Their eyes remain fixed in their sockets, so they rely on flexible necks to scan their surroundings. From forests to deserts, owls inhabit a wide range of environments and play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance.Desktop Version
Buildings on Grand-Place Square in Brussels, Belgium
Buildings on Grand-Place Square in Brussels, Belgium
Few squares in Belgium wear history as well as the Grand‑Place. The surrounding buildings, seen here, began as guild houses, each funded by a specific trade. Brewers, bakers, merchants and craftsmen treated architecture as language, translating work, status and rivalry into stone through reliefs, coats of arms and generous gold leaf. Styles meet without caution. Gothic verticals rise beside Baroque curves, while the Town Hall, older than its neighbours and unapologetically asymmetrical, holds the composition together.Desktop Version
Limpets at low tide on the coast of Praia da Ursa, Portugal
Limpets at low tide on the coast of Praia da Ursa, Portugal
Tucked away beneath steep cliffs near Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Praia da Ursa feels like the edge of the continent. Reached by a narrow, rugged trail, this secluded beach along Portugal"s Atlantic coast is shaped largely by wind, stone and powerful waves. When the tide recedes, the shoreline briefly widens. Smooth rocks emerge, and with them, small signs of life. Limpets cling tightly to the exposed stone, holding fast where the ocean usually breaks.Desktop Version

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States
Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States
What do you call a place where the rocks do the climbing, and humans try to keep up? Welcome to Smith Rock State Park in Oregon, United States, where cliffs rise fast and excuses fall faster. It sits inside the 26-mile-long Crooked River Caldera, shaped by multiple volcanic eruptions. Its welded tuff cliffs are made from compressed volcanic ash that cooled under pressure. The Crooked River carved the canyon, while formations like the Spire rise over 200 metres.Desktop Version
World Environment Day
World Environment Day
If nature had a "do not disturb" sign, it would hang over Sarek National Park, often called "the last European wilderness." On World Environment Day, this remote corner of Swedish Lapland reminds us what the planet looks like when humans take a step back—and let the wild take the lead.Desktop Version
Barn swallows of different subspecies resting together
Barn swallows of different subspecies resting together
Perched on slender reeds, a group of barn swallows gathers in a moment of stillness that contrasts with their usual speed. Known for swift, acrobatic flight and deeply forked tails, these birds are built for life on the wing. They catch insects mid-air and travel vast distances between continents. Subtle variations in colour and markings suggest that more than one subspecies may be present, reflecting the barn swallow"s extensive global range.Desktop Version
Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Tiny mushrooms often go unnoticed, but the horsehair parachute fungus deserves a closer look. With a stem as thin as a strand of horsehair and a pleated cap measuring just 0.5 to 1 centimetre across, this miniature mushroom proves that good things really do come in small packages.Desktop Version
World Turtle Day
World Turtle Day
Turtles are not only fascinating animals; they also play vital roles in nature. Sea turtles help keep seagrass beds and coral reefs healthy, while freshwater and land counterparts support balanced ecosystems. Their shells are part of their skeletons, formed from dozens of fused bones, and some species navigate using Earth"s magnetic field to return to the beaches where they hatched.Desktop Version

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy
Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy
Vernazza is a small seaside town in Cinque Terre, in Italy"s Liguria region. Built around the area"s only natural harbour, it has long been tied to the sea. First recorded in 1080 as a fortified settlement and maritime base, it later became part of the Republic of Genoa"s coastal defences. To this day, the village preserves its past in the ruins of Doria Castle and the watchtowers overlooking the bay. At the water"s edge stands the Church of Santa Margherita d"Antiochia, first mentioned in 1318 and expanded in later centuries, with a bell tower overlooking the port. Above the houses and narrow lanes, steep terraces support vineyards and olive groves, shaped by generations of stonework in a landscape protected within Cinque Terre National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture an aperitivo here: a glass of local white wine, the harbour in view and Ligurian favourites like focaccia and basil pesto—basically a postcard you can taste.Desktop Version
Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
At first glance, today"s image looks more like a drowned woodland than a lake. Bare tree trunks emerge from the water, their reflections stretching across the surface as the Grampians glow in the distance. This is Lake Fyans, a man-made off-stream reservoir at the foot of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park in Victoria, Australia. Part of the regional Wimmera-Mallee water supply system, it also draws anglers with its brown and rainbow trout and trophy-sized redfin.Desktop Version
