Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Water seems to be everywhere at Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia. Sixteen terraced lakes are linked by a network of waterfalls, streams and cascades that wind through forested limestone canyons. The constantly changing colours of the water, ranging from emerald green to deep blue, are shaped by minerals, sunlight and ever-changing reflections. Established in 1949, Plitvice Lakes is Croatia"s oldest and largest national park. The landscape is famous for its tufa barriers, natural limestone formations created as mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate over centuries. These barriers continue to grow and change, gradually transforming the park"s waterfalls and lakes.Desktop Version

View of the Sanguinaires Islands from Corsica, France
Just off the coast of Corsica, France, the Sanguinaires Islands rise from the Mediterranean as a small archipelago of four rugged, rocky islands. Viewed from a historic watchtower, they sit at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio. Steep cliffs, centuries-old landmarks and sweeping sea views have drawn visitors to the area for generations. Though the farthest island lies only about 1.2 miles from shore, the archipelago feels surprisingly remote, surrounded by open water and shaped by wind, waves and salt spray.Desktop Version
Brown bear, Alaska, United States
Brown bear, Alaska, United States
The season of big meals, bigger bellies and stocking up for winter is here. In Alaska, United States, brown bears at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve make the most of the food still available in October. They feed on fish, sedges, berries, roots, clams and other foods to build up fat reserves. Some can weigh more than 450 kilograms before entering their dens for hibernation. That stored fat helps them survive the winter, when they do not eat or drink.Desktop Version
International Geodiversity Day
International Geodiversity Day
What if a mountain range could show you its geological history in stripes? At Zhangye National Geopark in China, the rocks do exactly that. Ridges roll across the landscape in bands of red, orange, yellow, brown and other earthy tones. Known as the Danxia landform, this striking landscape was shaped by layers of sedimentary rock deposited over geological time. Tectonic forces later lifted and folded the rocks, while weathering and erosion carved them into ridges, cliffs, gullies and peaks.Desktop Version

Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England
What if a forest could keep you guessing at every turn? At Puzzlewood, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, England, winding paths lead through twisted trees, moss-covered rocks and deep stone ravines. Its unusual rock formations, known as scowles, are natural geological features that were exposed and modified over time and later exploited for iron ore mining during the Roman period and possibly earlier. In 1848, a worker discovered more than 3,000 Roman-era coins hidden in earthenware jars inside a rock cavity, turning the woodland into a real-life treasure hunt.Desktop Version

World Teachers Day
What can a 70-centimetre-tall bird teach us about life? Quite a lot. On World Teachers" Day, the Adélie penguin offers a lesson plan packed with resourcefulness, resilience and a little mischief. Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Most first-time visitors know Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India, as the Pink City, but the earlier royal capital was centred on Amber Fort. The fort developed over more than a century, beginning under Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and continuing under later Kachwaha rulers who controlled the kingdom that eventually became Jaipur State. The royal family moved to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727, but Amber continued to serve ceremonial functions.Desktop Version

World Space Week begins
World Space Week begins
First, you build a rocket. Then you ask it to leave Earth, fly to the moon, survive the trip and bring its spacecraft home. Simple, right? Well, not quite. World Space Week, observed every 4-10 October, celebrates the science that makes missions like this possible. The United Nations established the observance in 1999 to commemorate Sputnik 1"s launch on 4 October 1957, and the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty on 10 October 1967. This year"s theme, "Rocket Revolution," focuses on the evolving technology driving space exploration.Desktop Version

Field of kochia plants, China
In today"s image, kochia plants spread across the landscape in China in shades of green and deep red. Native to parts of Eurasia, kochia was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental plant and a source of material for broom making. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Matriarchs guide their families between water sources, tracing routes shaped as much by memory as by terrain.Desktop Version
