Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Water seems to be everywhere at Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia. Sixteen terraced lakes are linked by a network of waterfalls, streams and cascades that wind through forested limestone canyons. The constantly changing colours of the water, ranging from emerald green to deep blue, are shaped by minerals, sunlight and ever-changing reflections. Established in 1949, Plitvice Lakes is Croatia"s oldest and largest national park. The landscape is famous for its tufa barriers, natural limestone formations created as mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate over centuries. These barriers continue to grow and change, gradually transforming the park"s waterfalls and lakes.Desktop Version

View of the Sanguinaires Islands from Corsica, France
Just off the coast of Corsica, France, the Sanguinaires Islands rise from the Mediterranean as a small archipelago of four rugged, rocky islands. Viewed from a historic watchtower, they sit at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio. Steep cliffs, centuries-old landmarks and sweeping sea views have drawn visitors to the area for generations. Though the farthest island lies only about 1.2 miles from shore, the archipelago feels surprisingly remote, surrounded by open water and shaped by wind, waves and salt spray.Desktop Version

Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England
What if a forest could keep you guessing at every turn? At Puzzlewood, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, England, winding paths lead through twisted trees, moss-covered rocks and deep stone ravines. Its unusual rock formations, known as scowles, are natural geological features that were exposed and modified over time and later exploited for iron ore mining during the Roman period and possibly earlier. In 1848, a worker discovered more than 3,000 Roman-era coins hidden in earthenware jars inside a rock cavity, turning the woodland into a real-life treasure hunt.Desktop Version
International Geodiversity Day
International Geodiversity Day
What if a mountain range could show you its geological history in stripes? At Zhangye National Geopark in China, the rocks do exactly that. Ridges roll across the landscape in bands of red, orange, yellow, brown and other earthy tones. Known as the Danxia landform, this striking landscape was shaped by layers of sedimentary rock deposited over geological time. Tectonic forces later lifted and folded the rocks, while weathering and erosion carved them into ridges, cliffs, gullies and peaks.Desktop Version

World Space Week begins
World Space Week begins
First, you build a rocket. Then you ask it to leave Earth, fly to the moon, survive the trip and bring its spacecraft home. Simple, right? Well, not quite. World Space Week, observed every 4-10 October, celebrates the science that makes missions like this possible. The United Nations established the observance in 1999 to commemorate Sputnik 1"s launch on 4 October 1957, and the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty on 10 October 1967. This year"s theme, "Rocket Revolution," focuses on the evolving technology driving space exploration.Desktop Version
Brown bear, Alaska, United States
Brown bear, Alaska, United States
The season of big meals, bigger bellies and stocking up for winter is here. In Alaska, United States, brown bears at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve make the most of the food still available in October. They feed on fish, sedges, berries, roots, clams and other foods to build up fat reserves. Some can weigh more than 450 kilograms before entering their dens for hibernation. That stored fat helps them survive the winter, when they do not eat or drink.Desktop Version

Black History Month
Black History Month
What happens when a man once left out of the picture becomes part of its most important frame? Look to London"s Parliament Square, where Nelson Mandela stands among monuments to political giants. Sculpted by Ian Walters and unveiled in 2007, the bronze statue has a remarkable connection to Mandela"s history. In 1962, Mandela and Oliver Tambo visited Parliament Square and noticed that no Black person was represented among its monuments. Decades later, Mandela took his place there.Desktop Version

Flowing about 17 miles before emptying into Cook Inlet, the river is shorter than its famous neighbour, the Kenai, but no less remarkable.Desktop Version
Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Most first-time visitors know Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India, as the Pink City, but the earlier royal capital was centred on Amber Fort. The royal family moved to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727, but Amber continued to serve ceremonial functions.Desktop Version

Tolkien Week
Tolkien Week
Most landmarks were built by history. This one was built for a story. Hobbiton Movie Set sits in Matamata, New Zealand, on a working sheep farm that caught the eye of filmmakers scouting locations for "The Lord of the Rings" in 1998. The hills already looked Shire-like; round doors, tidy gardens and curling chimneys completed the illusion. The set was later rebuilt for "The Hobbit" films and became a destination for those eager to step into Middle-earth.Desktop Version

Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
On Lanzarote, part of Spain"s Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ochre and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square miles and burying roads, villages and farmland.Desktop Version

Sea otter, Monterey Bay, California, United States
Few animals are both expert groomers and guardians of underwater forests. In today"s image, a sea otter grooms its fur in Monterey Bay, California—a daily ritual essential to its survival. Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal, with up to one million hairs per square inch. Unlike seals and whales, they have little blubber, so their thick, air-trapping coat provides insulation against the cold Pacific.Desktop Version
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World"s Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair"s entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose more than 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.Desktop Version
