Common clownfish, Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
Common clownfish, Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
Sea anemones may look like underwater flowers, but they"re actually animals—close relatives of jellyfish and corals. Anchored to rocks or reefs, they use a sticky base and a crown of waving tentacles armed with tiny stingers to capture passing prey. Those stings can paralyse small fish, yet one famous neighbour is immune.Desktop Version

European Day of Parks
The European Day of Parks celebrates protected areas across the continent, marking the creation of Europe"s first national parks in 1909. It serves as a reminder that many of today"s most iconic landscapes exist because of long-term conservation efforts. Today"s image highlights a prime example of this legacy: Tre Cime Nature Park in northern Italy.Desktop Version

Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
The best route here isn"t built with concrete. Instead, the tide reveals a rocky path leading from Whytecliff Park to Whyte Islet in West Vancouver, Canada. A few hours later, the sea quietly covers the crossing again, making timing part of the experience. This shoreline has drawn visitors for generations. The tide opens the path; wet rocks keep you humble. The reward is a sweeping view back towards the beach and the hillside homes of Gleneagles.Desktop Version

Arched iceberg, western Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean
Arched iceberg, western Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean
A sculpted arch of ice rises from the Southern Ocean along the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. This formation began as compacted snow that turned into glacial ice over thousands of years. Eventually, part of a glacier or floating ice shelf fractured and broke free—a process known as calving—creating a drifting iceberg.Desktop Version

International Day of Forests
International Day of Forests
If Earth had a maintenance crew, forests would be spearheading it. They absorb carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, safeguard biodiversity, influence rainfall and help maintain clean water supplies. They still cover about 31% of the world"s land area, yet their continued decline shows how vulnerable these natural systems have become. Vast stretches continue to be cleared for agriculture, infrastructure and resource extraction, weakening ecosystems at an alarming rate.Desktop Version

Star Wars Day
May the 4th be with you! On Star Wars Day, reality cosplays as science fiction and dares you to tell the difference. Our image takes us to Ksar Ouled Soltane in Tunisia"s Tataouine district, where stacked clay granaries rise like sand‑coloured fortresses. Dating back to the 15th century, this storehouse complex was built by Berber communities to protect harvests from heat, theft and time. Function first. Beauty as a side effect.Desktop Version
Keukenhof Gardens, Lisse, Netherlands
Keukenhof Gardens, Lisse, Netherlands
Imagine a flower sparking a financial frenzy. Sounds unlikely, right? Yet in the 1630s, tulips did exactly that in the Netherlands. During tulip mania, rare bulbs became luxury items traded for astonishing sums—some valued at prices comparable to a house. Why so valuable? Unusual colours and striped patterns were scarce and unpredictable, and collectors wanted the rarest varieties they could find.Desktop Version

Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
On Lanzarote, part of Spain"s Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ochre and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square miles and burying roads, villages and farmland.Desktop Version
Hawksbill Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, United States
Hawksbill Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, United States
How high is high enough for a great view? In the eastern United States, it doesn"t take much. Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, United States, at more than 1,200 metres, showing how these older mountains rely on openness, not elevation. The park"s establishment in 1935 involved reforestation after extensive farming and logging. Today, much of that land has returned to forest, supporting mixed hardwoods, mountain laurel and rhododendron. What else? Some of the rocks found here date back over 1 billion years, among the oldest in the state. The park shelters over 200 bird species and 32 species of fish and remains dog-friendly, allowing pets in campgrounds and on most trails.Desktop Version

Mount Fuji on Honshu Island, Japan
Mount Fuji on Honshu Island, Japan
Mount Fuji, Japan"s highest mountain, rises to 3,776 metres on Honshu Island, about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo. Its near-perfect cone is a volcano—dormant since its last eruption in December 1707 yet still classed as active. That last major event is known as the Hōei eruption. It blasted ash and other tephra across eastern Japan, reaching Edo (today"s Tokyo). Beyond geology, Fuji has long been treated as a sacred landscape and a destination for pilgrimage climbs, reflecting how nature, religion and daily life overlap in Japan. That enduring cultural appeal is one reason it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as "a sacred place and source of artistic inspiration." Fuji is famously visible from far away on clear days but never guaranteed—clouds can hide it in minutes. Whether you hike it or just catch a glimpse from a train window, it still feels like Japan"s signature on the horizon.Desktop Version

Highway through Xitai Jinaier Lake, Qinghai Province, China
Cutting a surreal path through the high-altitude deserts of western China, Xitai Jinaier Lake (also known as West Taijinar Lake) is a striking salt lake in the remote Qaidam Basin. A stretch of National Highway 315 runs directly across its shallow waters, creating the illusion of a road floating between two worlds. On one side, the water often appears deep blue; on the other, a softer green hue, a contrast shaped by differing mineral concentrations in the brine.Desktop Version

Tremola Road on the Saint Gotthard Pass in Airolo, Switzerland
Follow the glowing ribbon of switchbacks and you"ll find one of Switzerland"s most legendary drives: Tremola Road, the historic southern approach to the Saint Gotthard Pass, above Airolo. Its showstopper stretch climbs about 300 metres in just 2.5 miles, curling through 24 named hairpin bends on granite cobblestones, with sturdy retaining walls edging the way. Overall, it runs about 7 miles and features 37 bends in total. Take it slow—every curve feels like a step back in time, trading speed for sweeping mountain scenery and big views towards the upper Leventina Valley. Whether you"re driving, cycling or pulling over for photos, look for the Grand Tour of Switzerland photo spot framing those iconic zigzags.Desktop Version
