Horsetail Fall, Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Today we celebrate the birthday of Ansel Adams, an American photographer whose vision helped shape the world"s perception of Yosemite National Park in California, United States. Yosemite is renowned for its granite walls, dramatic waterfalls and striking light, all of which have inspired generations of artists. One of its most intriguing sights is the Firefall, a term that refers to two distinct events in the park"s history. For decades, visitors gathered at Glacier Point to watch an artificial Firefall, in which embers were pushed off the cliff in a glowing stream of fire.Desktop Version

Its vast hypostyle hall, a space supported by rows of columns, features the famous red-and-white arches shown here. Emerald Bay and Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, California, United States
Emerald Bay and Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, California, United States
You know a place holds stories when geologists, filmmakers and local folklore all claim it for different reasons. Lake Tahoe, straddling the border between California and Nevada, fits that bill perfectly. Formed during the Ice Age, the lake was shaped by faulting and glacial carving that created its deep basin. It is now one of the deepest freshwater lakes in the United States. For generations, the Washoe people lived around these clear waters, fishing and gathering seasonally. Centuries later, miners arrived, steamboats crossed the water and Tahoe shifted from a resource hub to a year-round retreat.Desktop Version

World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Penguins usually bring Antarctica to mind, but these endearing flightless seabirds don"t always follow the ice. On World Penguin Day, the Galápagos penguins pictured here offer a vivid counterpoint. Found only in the Galápagos Islands—a volcanic archipelago about 600 miles off Ecuador"s coast—this species lives farther north than any other penguin. Cool, nutrient‑rich ocean currents make this equatorial habitat possible by supplying food and keeping surrounding waters within survivable temperatures. Compact and agile, these birds spend much of the day in the water to stay cool.Desktop Version

Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Laos and Thailand
Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Laos and Thailand
Before bridges, rivers set the pace of travel. Now, with bridges, people do. That shift explains why cross-border links like the Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Laos and Thailand matter. Bridges come in many forms, each built to meet a specific challenge. Arch bridges manage compression, suspension bridges span long distances and concrete box-girder bridges prioritise stability and load efficiency. This bridge uses the box-girder design, making it a practical choice for crossing the wide, fast-moving Mekong River.Desktop Version

Oloupena Falls, island of Molokai, Hawaii, United States
Moloka"i, often called the most Hawaiian of the islands, offers a slower rhythm shaped by nature and strong community ties. Formed by volcanic activity more than a million years ago, the island covers about 260 square miles and rises from the Pacific Ocean in long ridges and broad valleys. Unlike its busier neighbours, Moloka"i has resisted large-scale development, preserving a strong sense of local cohesion where families, traditions and stewardship of the land encapsulate central values. Life here focuses on the ocean, the land and stories passed down through generations.Desktop Version

Black History Month
What happens when a man once left out of the picture becomes part of its most important frame? Look to London"s Parliament Square, where Nelson Mandela stands among monuments to political giants. Sculpted by Ian Walters and unveiled in 2007, the bronze statue has a remarkable connection to Mandela"s history. Found only in the Americas, these bats feed on blood, while the rest survive on insects, fruit, nectar or pollen. In Texas, Bracken Cave can host up to 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats in summer. Many gulp crop pests, cutting pesticide use; others pollinate wild agaves and disperse seeds that help forests rebound.Desktop Version
Harbour and longtail boats at Ko Samui, Thailand
Harbour and longtail boats at Ko Samui, Thailand
Do not be fooled by how simple Ko Samui"s longtail boats look from a distance; decades of local ingenuity have shaped their slender frames. These vessels, known in Thailand as "ruea hang yao," emerged in the early 20th century, when fishermen repurposed vehicle engines to navigate shallow waters that larger boats couldn"t reach. Handcrafted plank by plank, each boat reflects generations of skill. Their hulls burst with bold, striking colours, while decorative cloth and flowers often crown the bows—Buddhist blessings meant to safeguard both the boat and its crew.Desktop Version
