Sep 10, 2025Hay bales in North Yorkshire, England

"Make hay while the sun shines" may sound like an old proverb, but in farming it"s a practical truth. Hay baling plays a crucial role in agriculture worldwide. It involves cutting, drying and packaging grasses to feed livestock during the colder months. The process depends heavily on the weather: the grass must be dry before it"s baled, or it risks moulding. Farmers must act quickly once a dry spell arrives, making it a seasonal race.Desktop Version

They hunt with patient precision, gently picking insects, larvae and tiny crustaceans from the water"s surface. Every movement reflects a subtle mastery of their environment, shaped by patience and instinct.Desktop Version

Sep 3, 2025Trullo buildings in Alberobello, Apulia, Italy

If fairy tales had architects, they might"ve come up with something like Alberobello in Italy. But instead of magic wands, it was limestone, mortar-free masonry and—according to some theories—a bit of tax evasion that built this town"s signature homes: the trulli. These are whitewashed stone houses topped with dry-stacked limestone roofs shaped like upside-down ice cream cones. It"s an ancient building technique, and in this case, a clever one. Alberobello"s trulli aren"t hidden one-offs. Entire districts—like Rione Monti and Aia Piccola—are packed with these quirky structures. Some are still lived in, while others have been transformed into cafés, souvenir shops and pint-sized museums. You"ll even find a church built in trullo style.Desktop Version

World Bee Day, marked every May 20, honours these vital pollinators and celebrates Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping. Janša saw bees as the noblest of insects, an idea now backed by science.Desktop Version

Jun 11, 2025Greater flamingos, Lüderitz, Namibia

In Lüderitz, Namibia, these birds aren"t just passing through—they"re standing their ground. Literally. On one leg. These long-legged locals, the greater flamingos, bring a splash of pink to Namibia"s windswept Atlantic coast. These birds are the largest of their kind, and they"re not shy about showing off. Towering over 120 centimetres tall with spoon-shaped bills and stilt-like legs, they"re easy to spot. That bubblegum pink hue? That"s all diet. Flamingos feed on algae, crustaceans and tiny invertebrates packed with carotenoids—the same pigments that make carrots orange. The more they eat, the pinker they get. In other words, they"re what they eat, right down to the blush. In the air, flamingos are sleek flyers, cruising long distances in a V-formation. Their migration habits are still being studied, but it"s clear they go where the wetlands flow—from inland salt pans to coastal sanctuaries, always in search of food and safe nesting zones.Desktop Version
