World Space Week begins
World Space Week begins
First, you build a rocket. Then you ask it to leave Earth, fly to the moon, survive the trip and bring its spacecraft home. Simple, right? Well, not quite. World Space Week, observed every 4-10 October, celebrates the science that makes missions like this possible. The United Nations established the observance in 1999 to commemorate Sputnik 1"s launch on 4 October 1957, and the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty on 10 October 1967. This year"s theme, "Rocket Revolution," focuses on the evolving technology driving space exploration.Desktop Version

Sea otter, Monterey Bay, California, United States
Few animals are both expert groomers and guardians of underwater forests. In today"s image, a sea otter grooms its fur in Monterey Bay, California—a daily ritual essential to its survival. Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal, with up to one million hairs per square inch. Unlike seals and whales, they have little blubber, so their thick, air-trapping coat provides insulation against the cold Pacific.Desktop Version

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World"s Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair"s entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose more than 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.Desktop Version

Brown bear, Alaska, United States
Brown bear, Alaska, United States
The season of big meals, bigger bellies and stocking up for winter is here. In Alaska, United States, brown bears at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve make the most of the food still available in October. They feed on fish, sedges, berries, roots, clams and other foods to build up fat reserves. Some can weigh more than 450 kilograms before entering their dens for hibernation. That stored fat helps them survive the winter, when they do not eat or drink.Desktop Version

Santenay wine region, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Each year, late summer and early autumn bring one of France"s most anticipated traditions: the "vendanges," the grape-picking season. The timing varies from one wine region to another and depends on weather conditions, sun exposure and the ripeness of the fruit. For many vineyards, harvest is still a hands-on effort, with teams carefully selecting bunches destined for some of the country"s most celebrated wines.Desktop Version

Field of kochia plants, China
In today"s image, kochia plants spread across the landscape in China in shades of green and deep red. Native to parts of Eurasia, kochia was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental plant and a source of material for broom making. Tolkien Week
Tolkien Week
Most landmarks were built by history. This one was built for a story. Hobbiton Movie Set sits in Matamata, New Zealand, on a working sheep farm that caught the eye of filmmakers scouting locations for "The Lord of the Rings" in 1998. The hills already looked Shire-like; round doors, tidy gardens and curling chimneys completed the illusion. The set was later rebuilt for "The Hobbit" films and became a destination for those eager to step into Middle-earth.Desktop Version

World Lake Day
World Lake Day
Imagine a world without the natural wonders that hold about 90% of Earth"s surface freshwater. Lakes are among our planet"s most valuable resources, providing clean water, supporting wildlife, regulating climate and sustaining communities worldwide. Recognising their importance, the United Nations designated 27 August as World Lake Day, first observed in 2025. Earth is home to more than 117 million lakes covering nearly 4% of its land surface. Together, they sustain countless ecosystems, while Lake Baikal in Russia alone holds about one-fifth of the world"s surface liquid freshwater. Yet many lakes face growing pressure from pollution, overuse and climate change.Desktop Version

This species" distinctive white-spot patterns are unique to each individual, much like human fingerprints.Desktop Version
