Rock River Falls, Upper Peninsula, Michigan, United States
Nestled within Michigan"s Rock River Canyon Wilderness in the United States, Rock River Falls emerges amid a landscape shaped by glaciers, dense woods and layers of history. It marks the moment when one of Earth"s poles tilts farthest from the sun. From that instant, daylight slowly begins to lengthen again.Desktop Version

Leopard at Etosha National Park, Namibia
If you"ve ever watched a wildlife documentary, you know the moment: the camera pans across a quiet savannah and suddenly a leopard appears as if it has been there all along. That quiet reveal says everything about how these cats operate. They move with precision, slipping through grass and branches without making a sound. Their build, muscular but lean, helps them climb, sprint and hide in plain sight. Their rosetted coats? While sunflowers come in shades of red, orange and maroon, it"s the classic yellow blooms with brown centres that are the most common. Beyond their good looks, sunflowers are grown for their tasty seeds, which are snacked on, pressed for cooking oil or offered as a treat for birds.Desktop Version

Some also help store carbon in the soil, playing a role in climate regulation.Desktop Version
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve
As Christmas Eve arrives, millions embrace customs that connect us to our roots—or introduce us to entirely new cultures. In snowy regions like the Bavarian Alps in Germany—a frost-kissed landscape seen in today"s image—festive lights glow against winter"s chill. Elsewhere, the sun blazes brightly: think of the Caribbean, Australia, or Brazil, where Christmas often means golden beaches instead of frosty mornings.Desktop Version

International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day
Read it and believe it—literacy changes everything. As a basic human right, literacy is a powerful tool that opens the door to greater freedoms and active global citizenship. India"s National Literacy Mission sees literacy as more than just knowing how to read, write and do basic arithmetic—it"s about putting those skills to work in everyday life. Functional literacy means understanding the causes of deprivation and working to change them. It involves gaining skills to improve one"s economic status and overall well-being. Recognising its far-reaching impact, International Literacy Day—observed each year on September 8 since 1967—serves as a reminder of how vital literacy is in building a better, more sustainable future for all. This year, the theme explores literacy in a digital age, where technology continues to reshape how people learn, communicate and participate in society.Desktop Version

Sea otters, Prince William Sound, Alaska, United States
Think sea otters are just about whiskers and floating naps? There"s much more behind those button eyes. In Prince William Sound, in Alaska, United States, they drift on ice or crack shellfish on their bellies with a favourite rock, as seen in today"s image. Less obvious is how their taste for sea urchins helps protect kelp forests. Otters also depend on clean, cold water—their fur traps air for warmth rather than repelling water, making them highly vulnerable to oil spills.Desktop Version
