A pine forest in Alsace, France
A pine forest in Alsace, France
In December, the forests of Alsace, in France"s Grand Est region, wrap themselves in a veil of fog, as if nature were holding its breath before winter. Between Scots pines and silver firs, the moss-covered ground muffles every step, and silence feels almost sacred. These woodlands, which cover nearly 40% of Alsace, shelter a rich biodiversity: roe deer, wild boar, black woodpeckers, and sometimes the elusive lynx, which has returned after decades of absence.Desktop Version

During this week, classrooms buzz with experiments, planetaria echo with wonder and telescopes bridge the gap to distant galaxies. Together, these moments weave a universal story of science, discovery and humanity"s relentless drive to push boundaries. The week"s mission is clear: to ignite the next generation of explorers, engineers and dreamers ready to rewrite the cosmos.Desktop Version
Miravet, Catalonia, Spain
Miravet, Catalonia, Spain
Some towns live in the present. Miravet in Spain politely declined. Clinging to a cliff above the Ebro river, this Catalan village still offers a living glimpse into the Middle Ages. A castle keeps its perch, potters spin like it"s the 1300s, and the local ferry still refuses to join the motor age. Welcome to the village where even the river seems too relaxed to rush. As Spain"s longest river, the Ebro winds through tales of Iberians, Romans, Moors and Knights Templar. Locals once relied on its waters for trade, transport and even defence. Today, you"ll spot kayakers, ferryboats and visitors drifting through the same currents where Crusaders once crossed.Desktop Version
Badlands National Park, South Dakota, United States
Badlands National Park, South Dakota, United States
As the sun sets over Badlands National Park, the landscape transforms into a stunning display of colour. The national park, located in southwestern South Dakota, United States, features a dramatic terrain of eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires carved by millennia of wind and water. Spanning over 950 square kilometres, the park is divided into three main units: the North Unit, home to the visitor centre and scenic Badlands Loop Road; and the Stronghold and Palmer Creek units. The park"s dramatic terrain is the result of sedimentary rock layers eroding at a rate of about two centimetres per year, revealing colourful bands of volcanic ash, silt and clay. These formations are not only visually striking but also rich in fossils, including remains from the Oligocene Epoch (about 33.9 to 23 million years ago), such as ancient horses, camels and sabre-toothed cats.Desktop Version

Celebrating Maha Shivaratri
Shiva isn"t a distant deity. He appears as a yogi in deep meditation, a dancer in motion, and a force that clears the way for renewal. Maha Shivaratri, observed today, brings focus to these many sides of Shiva. The festival falls on the 14th night of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna and is marked by night-long worship, simple offerings and quiet restraint rather than spectacle.Desktop Version

Garden at Château de Villandry, Loire Valley, France
Garden at Château de Villandry, Loire Valley, France
The grass truly is greener on the other side—especially when that side is Château de Villandry. While the Loire Valley in France is packed with stunning châteaux (French for castles), Villandry stands apart, not for its towering turrets or medieval might, but for its gardens. Built in the 16th century by Jean le Breton, a minister to King Francis I, Villandry was always meant to impress. Unlike fortified castles built for war, it was designed for comfort, featuring large windows and an open, welcoming layout. Its gardens are arranged across terraces with distinct themes. The ornamental garden showcases geometric patterns like the one pictured here. The water garden offers a serene retreat, and the vegetable garden turns everyday crops into artistic displays.Desktop Version
International Rock Day
International Rock Day
Do you think rocks are just … well, rocks? These natural mineral combinations have done more than just sit around—they"ve built the Earth"s crust and helped humans shape history. From Stone Age tools to the minerals powering modern civilisation, rocks have been essential throughout our journey. International Rock Day celebrates this enduring impact, inviting us to explore the science of rocks, admire their natural beauty and recognise the rich variety they add to our world. If you"re wondering where to see geology in action, Iceland is a great place to explore. Today"s image takes us to Kálfshamarsvík—a secluded cove on the country"s remote Skagi peninsula. Unlike Iceland"s famous black sand beaches, this cove"s shore is strewn with large, smooth pebbles, while its fiery volcanic past still reveals itself in the towering cliffs. Here, evidence of volcanic activity is on full display in the form of rare hexagonal basalt columns.Desktop Version
World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Cute, clumsy and completely captivating, penguins steal the show today. World Penguin Day is all about celebrating these flightless birds while raising awareness about their habitats. This day originated at McMurdo Station, an American research centre on Ross Island in Antarctica, where scientists observed Adélie penguins starting their yearly migration around this time. Inspired by this natural event, the observance was created to shed light on penguins" role in the ecosystem, the threats they face and the urgency of protecting their habitats.Desktop Version

Graceful, powerful and impossible to miss—the northern gannet is the largest seabird on the waters of the North Atlantic. Staghorn coral in shallow ocean
Staghorn coral in shallow ocean
Coral reefs—like the staghorn coral pictured here—are home to roughly 25% of all marine species, despite covering less than 1% of the seafloor. These ecosystems not only support ocean biodiversity but also protect coastlines and drive economies through tourism and fishing. But coral reefs are in crisis. Warming oceans, pollution and overfishing have put over 70% of coral reefs at risk—a figure expected to rise in the coming years.Desktop Version
Earth Day
Earth Day
On Earth Day, let"s journey to one of nature"s most stunning displays of geothermal power—Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The largest hot spring in the United States, it spans over 110 metres across and reaches temperatures of 71°C. This geothermal marvel is fuelled by the immense heat of the massive Yellowstone volcano beneath the surface. Its vivid rings of blue, green, yellow and orange are created by heat-loving microorganisms—called thermophiles—that thrive in the mineral-rich waters.Desktop Version
Little Pigeon River, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, United States
Little Pigeon River, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, United States
Blink and you miss it—until you hear it. The steady ripple, the splash of trout, the distant laughter of hikers. That"s the Little Pigeon River, threading its way through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, United States. Long before tourists tubed it and fly fishers praised it, this river was how people stayed afloat. The Cherokee tribe fished in it. Settlers built grist mills along it. Towns like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge grew up with it. Even the river"s name is a nod to the past—the passenger pigeon, once common in the area, vanished by the early 1900s. The West, Middle and East prongs come together to form a system that cuts through the Smokies and flows into the Pigeon River. Trails like the Gatlinburg Trail run alongside the river, offering flat paths with water views and shady rest spots. Some hikes, like the Ramsey Cascades trail, follow the river deeper into the park and reward you with impressive waterfalls.Desktop Version

World Reef Awareness Day
World Reef Awareness Day
"Life under the sea is better than anything they got up there," Sebastian the crab once told Ariel. But are we doing enough to protect that underwater world? On June 1, we celebrate World Reef Awareness Day, a time to recognise the beauty—and fragility—of coral reef ecosystems. One magnificent example is the New Caledonian barrier reef, which wraps around Grande Terre, New Caledonia"s largest island. At over 1,400 kilometres long, it"s one of the longest continuous barrier reefs in the world.Desktop Version
World Otter Day
World Otter Day
They slip through the water like furry torpedoes, roll on riverbanks like children on a playground and hold hands while they nap. Otters are nature"s playful pranksters, but their future isn"t all smooth sailing. Many species are threatened by habitat destruction, pollution and illegal wildlife trade. But it doesn"t have to be that way. On World Otter Day—the last Wednesday of May—let"s shine a light on the challenges these lovable mammals face and help protect their place in the wild.Desktop Version
International Chameleon Day
International Chameleon Day
One moment they"re blending in, the next they"re flaunting a new shade—chameleons really know how to colour the world. But every May 9, these masters of disguise can"t hide from the spotlight. International Chameleon Day celebrates their colour-shifting skills, zippy tongues and wild adaptations. With over 200 species found in diverse habitats, these reptiles don"t change colour to match their background. Instead, their shifting shades help regulate body temperature, attract mates and communicate with others. Specialised skin cells, including iridophores, reflect light to create dazzling displays. Some species turn bright to signal aggression, while others adopt subdued tones to avoid attention.Desktop Version
