World Water Day
World Water Day
Today is World Water Day, declared by the UN in 1992 and first observed the following year. Humanity could no longer drift along—we had to safeguard the very currents that keep us alive. Few places capture that urgency like Lake Tanganyika, in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. From space, it"s a 676-kilometre ribbon linking Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. At the shoreline, it"s a 10-million-year-old rift basin, formed as the Earth"s crust slowly pulled apart.Desktop Version
Celebrating Pi Day
Celebrating Pi Day
Long before pi had a name, people were drawn to its mystery. Every year on March 14, Pi Day highlights one of math"s most recognisable constants. The date reflects the first three digits of pi (π), the ratio of a circle"s circumference to its diameter: 3.14. Pi"s infinite, nonrepeating decimal has fascinated thinkers for a long time. The modern celebration began in 1988, when physicist Larry Shaw marked the day with a fitting tribute: serving pie.Desktop Version
World Meteorological Day
World Meteorological Day
The strength of nature is nowhere more evident than in powerful storms. Scary? Yes. Fascinating? Even more so. Learning to understand and respect these forces helps humanity live more safely.Desktop Version
Snowy egret preening, central Florida, United States
Snowy egret preening, central Florida, United States
Poetic name, poetic appearance. Meet the snowy egret, whose all-white plumage and bright yellow "slippers" on black legs give it a striking look. Once nearly wiped out by demand for its delicate breeding-season feathers—soft, lacy plumes prized for fashionable hats—conservation efforts saved its plumage.Desktop Version
International Leopard Day
International Leopard Day
High above the savannah in Kenya"s Masai Mara, a leopard curls up on a tree branch, napping as the grasslands glow at sunset. On International Leopard Day, observed on May 3, we celebrate one of the world"s most adaptable big cats. Leopards roam across Africa and parts of Asia, thriving in habitats that range from forests and mountains to open savannahs. Their spotted coats are unique to each individual, like fingerprints, and their powerful climbing skills allow them to stash prey high in trees, out of reach of scavengers.Desktop Version
Castle Day Japan
Castle Day Japan
Picture northern Japan in the early 1600s. Castles stood at the crossroads of politics, trade and governance. Across generations, they came to reflect not only moments of tension, but also endurance, adaptation and everyday life. Castle Day, celebrated on April 6, was created to highlight that layered past. The day uses a simple phonetic link—shi (4) and ro (6)—to form Shiro-no-Hi, because "shiro" means castle in Japanese. It"s a reminder that castles had serious jobs long before they had cinematic appeal.Desktop Version
Peggys Point Lighthouse, Atlantic Coast, Nova Scotia
Peggys Point Lighthouse, Atlantic Coast, Nova Scotia
Peggy"s Cove is a small yet captivating village on the rugged coast of Nova Scotia that offers a glimpse of life by the sea. The village"s most famous landmark is Peggy"s Point Lighthouse—also known as Peggy"s Cove Lighthouse—first established in 1868 and replaced by the current structure in 1915. For over a century, it has guided ships through the ever-changing Atlantic waters, serving as a timeless symbol of coastal life. The surrounding landscape, with its windswept beauty and crashing waves, feels almost untouched by time.Desktop Version

Paradise Cave, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam
Paradise Cave makes a powerful first impression the moment visitors step inside. This vast limestone cavern lies deep within Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in central Vietnam, a region marked by rugged mountains and countless hidden caves. Stretching 31 kilometres, Paradise Cave is one of Asia"s longest dry caves, and its scale is immediately apparent. High ceilings rise above the walkways and layered patterns formed by mineral-rich water over millions of years line the walls.Desktop Version
European hedgehog, France
European hedgehog, France
Spring arrives with a small, spiky ambassador: the European hedgehog, spotted here in France. Part cuddle, part survival gear, this tiny forager is mostly nocturnal and usually solitary, guided mainly by smell and sound. Its job description is simple: roam, sniff through leaf litter and vacuum up invertebrates like worms, beetles, slugs and caterpillars—the kind of snacks that keep ecosystems running and gardeners smiling. When danger shows up, it doesn"t negotiate or flee. It curls into a tight ball and lets its spines do the talking.Desktop Version
International Beaver Day
International Beaver Day
International Beaver Day, celebrated on April 7, recognises a hardworking little engineer quietly building a better world—one stick at a time. The beaver—buck-toothed, paddle-tailed and famously industrious—has been reshaping freshwater landscapes for millions of years. With their iron-reinforced orange incisors, these skilled rodents cut down trees and build dams that slow the flow of water, improve its quality and create wetlands that support a remarkable diversity of life. Their sturdy lodges, made of branches and mud, have underwater entrances that protect them from predators and keep their families safe.Desktop Version
International Museum Day
International Museum Day
You walk into a museum, and suddenly time shifts. A fossil hints at life millions of years ago. A gemstone reflects geological change you can"t see. That sense of connection is exactly what International Museum Day, created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, aims to celebrate.Desktop Version
Bláhver, Hveravellir, Iceland
Bláhver, Hveravellir, Iceland
Have you ever wondered what happens when fire, ice and time negotiate the same territory? Iceland"s Hveravellir geothermal field has the answer. In this highland hotspot, energy from the Earth"s interior meets the icy surface, triggering a volatile dialogue between pressure, temperature and stone. Fumaroles hiss, steam curls into the air and the ground paints itself with sulphur whites, rust reds and ochre yellows—not only artistry, but chemical reactions driven by extreme heat. In today"s image, Bláhver, a natural hot spring, dazzles in electric blue. Its colour comes from mineral- and silica-rich waters that reflect light on the surface.Desktop Version
Atlantic puffin in Elliston, Newfoundland
Atlantic puffin in Elliston, Newfoundland
As morning breaks over Elliston, a small seabird appears with a wild iris held across its bill. The scene looks almost like a gift, yet biologists say Atlantic puffins are not known to offer flowers to their mates during courtship. The colourful bill, which becomes brightest in the breeding season and fades later in the year, helps make the photograph memorable. Even their feet turn brighter.Desktop Version
Happy Mothers Day!
Happy Mothers Day!
On Mother"s Day, we honour the care, patience and protection that shape lives everywhere. In the wild, these qualities often stand out most where survival is hardest. Captured in Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba, today"s image shows a polar bear mother and her cubs sharing a playful moment on the Arctic tundra.Desktop Version
Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
An egg-laying mammal. No teeth. Reptilian gait. Built-in body armour. If the short-beaked echidna sounds like a checklist of contradictions, that"s because it is—and it owns it. Native to Australia, Tasmania and parts of New Guinea, it"s one of the few surviving monotremes, or mammals that lay eggs. Despite the headlines, it still qualifies as a mammal: it has fur, produces milk and is warm-blooded. The twist? Milk is released through specialised skin patches rather than nipples, leaving the young to lap it up.Desktop Version
World Art Day
World Art Day
Art surrounds us. Creativity and self-expression are part of human identity and mould our past and future. While some might dedicate their lives to the arts, others are the recipients of what artists channel. World Art Day on April 15 celebrates this ever-flowing link between artistic creations and society that shapes our cultures.Desktop Version
Common clownfish in a sea anemone, Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
Common clownfish in a sea anemone, Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
Sea anemones may look like underwater flowers, but they"re actually animals—close relatives of jellyfish and corals. Anchored to rocks or reefs, they use a sticky base and a crown of waving tentacles armed with tiny stingers to capture passing prey. Those stings can paralyse small fish, yet one famous neighbour is immune.Desktop Version
National Indigenous Peoples Day
National Indigenous Peoples Day
How many stories can a single day hold? Quite a lot, actually. Today in Canada, National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples whose knowledge, traditions and skills have shaped life across the country for thousands of years. The day was officially recognised in 1996 after years of calls from Indigenous organisations and leaders seeking stronger recognition of their cultures and communities.Desktop Version
Harbour and longtail boats at Ko Samui, Thailand
Harbour and longtail boats at Ko Samui, Thailand
Do not be fooled by how simple Ko Samui"s longtail boats look from a distance; decades of local ingenuity have shaped their slender frames. These vessels, known in Thailand as "ruea hang yao," emerged in the early 20th century, when fishermen repurposed vehicle engines to navigate shallow waters that larger boats couldn"t reach. Handcrafted plank by plank, each boat reflects generations of skill. Their hulls burst with bold, striking colours, while decorative cloth and flowers often crown the bows—Buddhist blessings meant to safeguard both the boat and its crew.Desktop Version
Jasper National Park in Alberta
Jasper National Park in Alberta
Can you picture 11,000 square kilometres of protected wilderness? That"s Jasper National Park in Alberta. Established in 1907 as part of a growing network of protected landscapes in the Canadian Rockies, it was designated a national park in 1930. The park reflects both conservation efforts and much older Indigenous connections, including those of the Nakoda and Secwépemc peoples. Its terrain ranges from glacier-fed rivers and alpine meadows to dense conifer forests dominated by spruce and pine.Desktop Version
Spring equinox
Spring equinox
A white snowdrop is spring"s quiet debut. No confetti, no countdown—just a delicate flower appearing as the spring equinox balances day and night. Snowdrops are among the first to bloom, often pushing through cold soil before winter fully packs up. Their drooping, bell-shaped flowers may look delicate, but they"re built for early arrival. Special antifreeze proteins in their cells help them tolerate frost, making them well suited to unpredictable late-winter weather.Desktop Version
Arbor Day
Arbor Day
Arbor Day celebrates the quiet power of trees—the way they steady ecosystems, shelter wildlife, cool cities and shape the environments we rely on every day. Observed in the United States on the last Friday in April, the day encourages communities there—and in many other countries, where dates vary with the growing season—to plant, protect and care for forests of every kind.Desktop Version
Fibonacci Day
Fibonacci Day
Look closely at this ammonite fossil. Its swirling shell, once home to a prehistoric sea creature, holds a mathematical secret—a spiral pattern. Each new chamber is proportionally larger than the previous one, maintaining a consistent growth ratio, often associated with the Fibonacci sequence.Desktop Version

Church of Notre Dame de Bon-Port, Les Sables-dOlonne, France
Under the vaulted ceiling of Notre-Dame de Bon-Port in Les Sables-d"Olonne, a seaside town in western France, the stone ribs still guide the gaze upward. Construction of the soaring vaults began in 1646. The church—officially recognised as a French historic monument since 1993—stands on the site of a 13th-century chapel, a reminder of deep-rooted spiritual life on the Atlantic coast.Desktop Version
Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska, United States
Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska, United States
Hidden just outside Juneau, Alaska, the Mendenhall Glacier feels almost unreal, inside and out. Step into one of its rare blue ice caves, and the world turns quiet and luminous, with light filtering through centuries-old compacted ice. The glacier stretches about 21 kilometres from the Juneau Icefield, slowly flowing towards the valley below and reshaping itself year by year.Desktop Version
