Cadini di Misurina, Dolomites, Veneto, Italy
The image captures the jagged skyline of Cadini di Misurina at sunrise in Veneto, northeastern Italy. Visitors heading toward nearby Tre Cime di Lavaredo often come for the famous route only to find their attention hijacked by the Cadini. Part of the Dolomites, these needle-like peaks reaching more than 2,800 metres at their highest point seem sculpted for drama. The twist? They started out as ancient coral reefs.Desktop Version
World Lake Day
World Lake Day
Imagine a world without the natural wonders that contain about 90% of Earth"s surface freshwater. Lakes provide drinking water, support wildlife, help regulate climate and sustain communities around the globe. In recognition of their vital role, the United Nations designated 27 August as World Lake Day, first observed in 2025. The observance has particular relevance for Canadians, as Canada is home to more than two million lakes that shape its landscapes, ecosystems, recreation and freshwater resources. Protecting them is increasingly important as pollution, overuse and climate change put pressure on many lake environments.Desktop Version

Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
On Lanzarote, part of Spain"s Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ochre and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square kilometres and burying roads, villages and farmland.Desktop Version

Polar bear cubs playing in Svalbard, Norway
Two polar bear cubs pick their way across the snow in Svalbard, a remote Norwegian archipelago of glaciers, mountains and frozen fjords deep in the Arctic Ocean. This wild landscape is part of the Barents Sea region, home to one of the world"s largest polar bear populations, with around 2,600 bears.Desktop Version
International Whale Shark Day
International Whale Shark Day
Today, International Whale Shark Day makes room for the world"s largest fish. Despite their name, whale sharks are not whales but fish, reaching lengths of up to 18 metres and weighing around 18 metric tonnes. Found in warm tropical seas, they glide through the water with their mouths open, filtering plankton, fish eggs and other tiny prey. This species" distinctive white-spot patterns are unique to each individual, much like human fingerprints.Desktop Version
Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Yosemite National Park, California, United States
In 1890, Yosemite became America"s third national park. More than a century later, it still feels like a place that operates on geological time rather than human schedules. From Olmsted Point, the overlook in today"s image, that timescale is impossible to miss. The smooth granite underfoot was sculpted by glaciers, while scattered boulders known as glacial erratics were carried here by ice and abandoned when it melted.Desktop Version
Pink dahlia flower
Pink dahlia flower
Some flowers quietly fill a garden. Dahlias arrive as if they have been cast in the lead role. Native to Mexico, these members of the daisy family come in more than 57,000 cultivated varieties, thanks in part to their unusual genetics. Dahlias are octoploids, meaning they have eight sets of chromosomes, which helps create blooms that range from tiny buttons to 36 centimetres across.Desktop Version
Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France
Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France
No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World"s Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair"s entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.Desktop Version
World Elephant Day
World Elephant Day
On August 12, World Elephant Day invites us to pause and consider not just the size of these animals, but the depth of their lives. In places like Amboseli National Park in Kenya—captured in this image—a herd doesn"t simply pass through the landscape; it remembers it. Matriarchs guide their families between water sources, tracing routes shaped as much by memory as by terrain.Desktop Version
Autumn equinox
Autumn equinox
The autumn equinox marks a turning point in the Northern Hemisphere. Occurring each September, it is the moment when the sun crosses the equator heading south, and day and night are nearly equal in length. After this celestial balance, daylight gradually shrinks as the journey towards winter begins.Desktop Version
National Cousins Day
National Cousins Day
Today is National Cousins Day—a perfect excuse to reconnect with the people who know your family stories best and probably helped create a few of them. Fittingly, Canadians mark the day alongside their neighbour and, you could say, cousin to the south: the United States. Whether you grew up at the cottage, camping, skating or gathering for a long weekend barbecue, cousins often share some of life"s best memories.Desktop Version
International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples
International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples
Today, the International Day of the World"s Indigenous Peoples invites a closer look at communities whose stories stretch far beyond recorded history. More than 476 million Indigenous people live across about 90 countries, sustaining thousands of cultures and many of the world"s roughly 7,000 languages. In Canada, First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples each have distinct histories, traditions and languages that continue to shape the country"s identity.Desktop Version

Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Fungi often go unnoticed beneath forest floors, lawns and fallen leaves, yet their underground threads help recycle nutrients and support healthy ecosystems. The mushrooms we see are only the fruiting bodies of much larger organisms. They appear briefly, release spores, then disappear from sight. Unlike plants, fungi belong to a kingdom of their own. Some species even glow, while others form partnerships with trees.Desktop Version
International Tiger Day
International Tiger Day
On International Tiger Day, this family moves through Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, India, with the confidence of those who know exactly where they stand in the food chain. These are Bengal tigers, built for both stealth and power: an adult can stretch over 3 metres from nose to tail and weigh around 227 kilograms, yet walk without making a sound. Their stripes also play a part in a landscape where visibility is a double-edged sword, camouflaging their bodies in patterns that prey struggle to read.Desktop Version

Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
At first glance, today"s image looks more like a drowned woodland than a lake. Bare tree trunks emerge from the water, their reflections stretching across the surface as the Grampians glow in the distance. This is Lake Fyans, an artificial reservoir on the edge of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park in Victoria, Australia. Popular with boaters, anglers, sailors and water skiers, it offers a front-row seat to one of the country"s most striking landscapes.Desktop Version

Iceland"s northern location and increasingly dark autumn and winter nights make it one of the world"s premier destinations for aurora viewing.Desktop Version
