World Bee Day
World Bee Day
A soft buzz and a dusting of pollen can shape the future of our food. World Bee Day, observed each year on May 20, celebrates pollinators like the bumble bee pictured here during its quiet yet essential work. Unlike many insects, bumble bees use "buzz pollination," vibrating their flight muscles to shake pollen from flowers—a method vital for crops such as tomatoes, peppers and blueberries.Desktop Version
Plains zebra foal in Etosha National Park, Namibia
Plains zebra foal in Etosha National Park, Namibia
Etosha National Park, Namibia, is not a place for soft starts, and the plains zebra foal in this image seems to get the memo. In a land this vast—nearly 22,300 square kilometres of salt pans and grassland—timing is everything, and hesitation is expensive. Lions, spotted hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs and leopards constantly pressure the herd—especially the youngest—so zebras are born ready. Minutes after arrival, they"re upright. Hours later, they"re moving.Desktop Version

World Environment Day
If nature had a "do not disturb" sign, it would hang over Sarek National Park, often called "the last European wilderness." On World Environment Day, this remote corner of Swedish Lapland reminds us what the planet looks like when humans take a step back—and let the wild take the lead.Desktop Version

Common blue butterfly
Common blue butterfly
That quick glimpse of blue fluttering through a field has a story that begins much earlier, with a tiny caterpillar and a surprising survival trick. The common blue is found across Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, feeding on flower nectar as an adult. It starts life as a small egg, often placed by a female on a host plant such as bird"s-foot trefoil. The real surprise comes during its caterpillar stage, when ants play an unexpected role in its survival. After hatching, the caterpillar feeds on leaves before entering the next stage of its transformation. Along the way, it produces a sugary substance called honeydew that ants feed on. As a way of saying thanks, the ants may protect the caterpillar from predators.Desktop Version

Ruins of Dunseverick Castle, Northern Ireland
Ruins of Dunseverick Castle, Northern Ireland
At Dunseverick Castle in Northern Ireland, history hangs on—literally. Wall fragments cling to a basalt stack above the Atlantic, proving that even ruins can hold their ground. Two thousand years ago, it marked the end of the Slige Midluachra, one of Ireland"s five great roads, linking travellers to the royal seat at Hill of Tara. In the 5th century, Saint Patrick is said to have visited and baptised a local man, Olcán, here. Tradition holds that the Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny), used for crowning Irish kings, was taken from this shore for Scotland.Desktop Version
1953 Mount Everest Expedition
1953 Mount Everest Expedition
In Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal, Mount Everest rises into view, calm and unmoved as evening settles in. But on 29 May, 1953, that stillness was broken. After years of planning and weeks of climbing, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay reached the summit. At more than 8,800 metres above sea level, they became the first people known to have stood at Earth"s highest point.Desktop Version

Highway through Xitai Jinaier Lake, Qinghai Province, China
Cutting a surreal path through the high-altitude deserts of western China, Xitai Jinaier Lake (also known as West Taijinar Lake) is a striking salt lake in the remote Qaidam Basin. A stretch of National Highway 315 runs directly across its shallow waters, creating the illusion of a road floating between two worlds. On one side, the water often appears deep blue; on the other, a softer green hue, a contrast shaped by differing mineral concentrations in the brine.Desktop Version

Infinity Bridge in Stockton-on-Tees, northern England
At first glance, it"s just a bridge. Then the reflection changes everything. Atlantic puffins, Wales
Atlantic puffins, Wales
Along the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, Atlantic puffins make their homes in burrows and cliffside crevices. These seabirds, with their black‑and‑white plumage and colourful beaks, are classified by the IUCN as vulnerable, as overfishing and changing ocean conditions reduce the availability of their prey. Each spring, they return to breed, laying a single egg in carefully dug burrows. Remarkable swimmers, they use their wings to "fly" underwater when hunting small fish such as herring and sand eels.Desktop Version
Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
As night settles over Suwon, South Korea, the old city wall pictured here shows that function doesn"t necessarily cancel out beauty—it can create it. Built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Hwaseong Fortress was more than a barrier. It was policy in stone: a reform-minded push for a leaner, better-run state, driven by practicality and a deeply personal motive. Jeongjo ordered its construction to honour his father while strengthening a kingdom that wanted smarter systems, not just thicker walls.Desktop Version
Winding road of Julier Pass, Switzerland
Winding road of Julier Pass, Switzerland
Some mountain roads become destinations in their own right, and Julier Pass is one of them. This Swiss mountain pass rises to 2,284 metres and has linked Alpine valleys along a route used for nearly 2,000 years. Its story began long before modern traffic. No guardrails, no pavement—just a route used by Roman travellers, merchants and messengers. Archaeological finds near the summit, including countless coins and two Roman soapstone columns, suggest there was once a sanctuary or stopping place for those tackling the climb.Desktop Version

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan
Hawa Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan
What if a building could breathe? In the middle of Jaipur, Hawa Mahal does exactly that—pulling in air, pushing out heat and turning architecture into a quiet science experiment. It"s less a palace, more a perfectly timed exhale. And yes, it really does live up to its name: the "Palace of Winds."Desktop Version

Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day
Pull up a chair, pass the pie and make some room for gratitude. Thanksgiving in Canada has a story that goes back much further than the holiday table. This holiday is rooted in harvest traditions, with people gathering to give thanks. Its history is not tied to one single event, although an early celebration is associated with English explorer Martin Frobisher. In 1578, after his expedition made a safe passage across the Atlantic and reached what is now Nunavut, Frobisher held a celebratory feast. Over time, Thanksgiving evolved into a national holiday centred on the harvest and spending time with loved ones.Desktop Version
World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Penguins usually bring Antarctica to mind, but these endearing flightless seabirds don"t always follow the ice. On World Penguin Day, the Galápagos penguins pictured here offer a vivid counterpoint. Found only in the Galápagos Islands—a volcanic archipelago about 966 kilometres off Ecuador"s coast—this species lives farther north than any other penguin. Cool, nutrient‑rich ocean currents make this equatorial habitat possible by supplying food and keeping surrounding waters within survivable temperatures. Compact and agile, these birds spend much of the day in the water to stay cool.Desktop Version
