Manatee
Manatee
Today, we show some love to the ocean"s chillest stars. Forget dolphins doing flips or sharks stealing headlines—manatees win hearts by doing, well, almost nothing. And that"s the charm. They are found in the warm coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon Basin and West Africa. They can weigh about 550 kilograms, yet their diet is strictly vegetarian. These whiskered mammals are slow swimmers in a fast-paced world. They cruise at around 8 kilometres per hour—great for relaxing, not so great when speedboats come charging through. That"s why "no-wake zones," or sections of waterways with a strict speed limit, are there to keep manatees safe.Desktop Version

Przewalskis horses
Przewalskis horses
This species missed the domestication memo and kept going on its own terms. Say hello to Przewalski"s horse, considered the last truly wild horse on Earth. Once widespread across Central Asia, it disappeared from the wild in the 1960s after decades of hunting, habitat loss and competition with livestock. Its survival depended on an unlikely lifeline: a small number of individuals captured by early 20th‑century collectors, which became the foundation of all modern Przewalski"s horses.Desktop Version
Wildflower bloom, Central Valley, California, United States
Wildflower bloom, Central Valley, California, United States
Spring announces itself across California"s Central Valley with the first bursts of wildflowers following the winter rains. Stretching about 720 kilometres from north to south and covering approximately 51,800 square kilometres, the valley is one of the world"s most productive agricultural regions. In early spring, however, an older identity briefly resurfaces. From March through April, native annuals such as goldfields, tidy tips and owl"s clover quickly germinate once temperature and soil moisture are optimal. They race to complete their life cycles before the long dry season begins.Desktop Version
Corona Arch near Moab, Utah, United States
Corona Arch near Moab, Utah, United States
Just outside Arches National Park in Utah, United States, lies a natural wonder that rises like a colossal doorway against the sky, drawing photographers, nature lovers and hikers. Welcome to Corona Arch, seen in today"s image, a towering Navajo sandstone formation that offers big adventure without the big crowds. The Corona Arch Trail starts off easy but packs a punch of scenery: railroad tracks, slickrock scrambles and even a metal cable assist make it more than just a walk in the desert. After a 2.4-kilometre walk, the payoff is big: a massive arch that"s 43 metres wide and 32 metres high. It"s so large that people once swung from it on ropes, until that was banned for safety reasons.Desktop Version

Canadian Multiculturalism Day
Imagine standing beneath Montreal"s dramatic sky on a balmy June evening. Around you, conversations switch between French, English, Mandarin, Tagalog and many other languages. That scene captures the spirit of Canadian Multiculturalism Day.Desktop Version
Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day
Every February 2, the world turns its eyes to a furry little forecaster with a penchant for popping out of holes: the groundhog. Legend has it that if this pint-sized predictor sees its shadow, winter drags on for six more weeks. No shadow? Spring is just around the corner.Desktop Version
Hen Galan
Hen Galan
Most people wrap up their New Year plans by the first week of January. Wales, however, has a charming habit of saying, "Hold on—we"ve got one more celebration left." Enter Hen Galan, the "Old New Year," observed on January 13 in parts of Wales, most famously in the Gwaun Valley. The date survives from the old Julian calendar, kept long after the rest of Britain adopted the Gregorian one.Desktop Version
International Polar Bear Day
International Polar Bear Day
International Polar Bear Day underscores how closely these Arctic giants are tied to their frozen realms. Celebrated on February 27, the day shines a light on polar bears and the rapidly changing world beneath their paws. The world"s largest land carnivores roam across vast icy landscapes, sometimes covering hundreds of kilometres in search of food. They"re perfectly adapted to life on sea ice, with large paws that can span nearly a foot and help them swim for kilometres.Desktop Version

Purple crocus flowers, Seven Rila Lakes, Bulgaria
As winter"s grip on the Rila Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria begins to loosen, crocuses push through the thinning snow, signalling the arrival of spring in the country"s highest mountain range. These early bloomers use stored nutrients to quickly grow in cold conditions, completing much of their life cycle before taller plants emerge. Their clustered blossoms unfurl over alpine meadows in sweeping purple ribbons, creating a striking contrast with bright snowfields and crisp morning light.Desktop Version
Blue walls of Chefchaouen, Morocco
Blue walls of Chefchaouen, Morocco
On January 11, 1944, Morocco took a bold step toward freedom. Sixty-six leaders signed the Proclamation of Independence, demanding an end to French and Spanish colonial rule and affirming the country"s right to sovereignty. This manifesto, backed by Sultan Mohammed V, was presented not only to colonial authorities but also to representatives of the US, UK and the former Soviet Union—a signal that Morocco"s struggle was part of a global call for self-determination. Though repression followed, the movement endured, and by 1956 Morocco achieved full independence, marking a turning point in North African history.Desktop Version
Evening over Göreme, Cappadocia, Türkiye
Evening over Göreme, Cappadocia, Türkiye
As evening settles over the town of Göreme in the heart of the Cappadocia region of Türkiye, dusk reveals a landscape forged by nature and centuries of human presence. This scene is part of Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1985 for its exceptional combination of early cultural history and geological formations. These formations, often called "fairy chimneys" or hoodoos, began as layers of volcanic ash that hardened into soft stone following eruptions of ancient Anatolian volcanoes. Over time, wind and water carved the pillars, ridges and valleys that define the region today.Desktop Version
World Wildlife Day
World Wildlife Day
Today is World Wildlife Day, a United Nations observance that invites us to reflect on our well-being"s deep connection to the natural world. This year"s theme focuses on medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs)—species used in traditional healing, modern medicine, cosmetics and food. The UN estimates that between 50,000 and 70,000 MAP species are harvested globally, with 70-95% of people in many developing countries relying on them for primary health care. However, many of these plants face mounting threats from habitat loss, overharvesting and illegal trade, making sustainable use essential for their future.Desktop Version

The universe hums with creation. Featured here, in the Lagoon Nebula, a cluster called NGC 6530 is kindling newborn stars, a glowing reminder that beginnings are woven into the fabric of the cosmos. About 4,350 light-years away and a few million years old, it is a stellar formation still in its earliest chapter.Desktop Version
Male hooded merganser, Oregon, United States
Male hooded merganser, Oregon, United States
Each autumn, the quiet waterways of Oregon, United States, become seasonal waypoints for hooded mergansers—small diving ducks native to North America. They are agile divers, plunging beneath the surface to catch fish and other prey. Males, known as drakes, stand out with their fan-shaped white crests, dark heads and chestnut-brown sides, while females, called hens, are brownish grey with smaller crests. Oregon"s lakes and wetlands provide sheltered feeding grounds as these birds migrate or winter across the continent.Desktop Version

The Gothic Gate in the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, Czechia
From 18th-century visitors to fire-carved trails, this rock city tells a story of survival. Hidden in Czechia"s Hradec Králové Region, the Adršpach–Teplice Rocks form Central Europe"s largest sandstone labyrinth. For centuries, the cliffs and passages lay cloaked in forest, until a great fire stripped the land bare. Arches, towers and winding corridors emerged out of the ashes, and the first hiking paths were carved into the rock. Soon after, explorers and poets left their marks with stone inscriptions that captured a destination both wild and enchanting.Desktop Version

Badlands National Park, South Dakota, United States
On November 10, 47 years ago, a stark stretch of South Dakota prairie gained recognition as one of America"s natural treasures. Badlands National Park, carved by wind and water, was redesignated from national monument to national park status in 1978, securing stronger protection within the United States" National Park System. Its cliffs and spires rise above fossil beds that reveal ancient rhinoceroses, camels and subtropical seas. Yet the park is not only a window into the past; it also safeguards one of the largest remaining tracts of mixed-grass prairie in the country.Desktop Version

Koala in the Great Otway National Park, Australia
Amid the lush eucalyptus canopy of Great Otway National Park, koalas reign as sleepy sentinels of Australia"s wild soul. World Population Day
World Population Day
We are living in a full house, and it is getting fuller. With 8.2 billion people and counting, World Population Day highlights how that growth affects cities, food and the future. First observed in 1989, the day focuses on how unchecked population growth affects sustainability. The event was inspired by Five Billion Day in 1987, which marked the approximate date when the global population hit that milestone. As cities expand, green spaces shrink and agriculture competes for limited land and water resources. But there is a way forward—investing in education, improving access to healthcare and building smarter cities can balance growth with sustainability.Desktop Version
