Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Yosemite National Park, California, United States
In 1890, Yosemite became America"s third national park. More than a century later, it still feels like a place that operates on geological time rather than human schedules. From Olmsted Point, the overlook in today"s image, that timescale is impossible to miss. The smooth granite underfoot was sculpted by glaciers, while scattered boulders known as glacial erratics were carried here by ice and abandoned when it melted.Desktop Version

Decorator crab on a sea pen, Komodo National Park, Indonesia
Think of this as underwater hide-and-seek: the sea pen stands out while the crab blends in. Today"s image comes from the waters surrounding Komodo National Park in Indonesia, established in 1980 and named after the Komodo dragon, the world"s largest living lizard. The protected area includes islands, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs. Located between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the park is shaped by powerful currents that support a rich diversity of marine life, including species that rely on camouflage to survive.Desktop Version
Mid-Autumn Festival
Mid-Autumn Festival
What if the full moon were the guest of honour at your family dinner? That is the idea behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. Its roots trace back more than 3,000 years to moon-honouring rituals during the Zhou Dynasty. Its best-known legend tells of Chang"e, who drank an elixir of immortality and rose to the moon.Desktop Version
Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Most first-time visitors know Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India, as the Pink City, but the earlier royal capital was centred on Amber Fort. That"s where much of the dynasty"s political and architectural history was shaped. The fort developed over more than a century, beginning under Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and continuing under later Kachwaha rulers who controlled the kingdom that eventually became Jaipur State. The royal family moved to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727, but Amber continued to serve ceremonial functions.Desktop Version

Field of kochia plants, China
Field of kochia plants, China
In today"s image, kochia plants spread across the landscape in China in shades of green and deep red. Native to parts of Eurasia, kochia was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental plant and a source of material for broom making. Its ability to withstand drought, heat, saline soils and low rainfall helped it spread across the Great Plains and much of the American West.Desktop Version
Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
On Lanzarote, part of Spain"s Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ochre and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square kilometres and burying roads, villages and farmland.Desktop Version

Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France
Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France
No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World"s Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair"s entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.Desktop Version

World Lake Day
World Lake Day
Imagine a world without the natural wonders that contain about 90% of Earth"s surface freshwater. Lakes provide drinking water, support wildlife, help regulate climate and sustain communities around the globe. In recognition of their vital role, the United Nations designated 27 August as World Lake Day, first observed in 2025. The observance has particular relevance for Canadians, as Canada is home to more than two million lakes that shape its landscapes, ecosystems, recreation and freshwater resources. Protecting them is increasingly important as pollution, overuse and climate change put pressure on many lake environments.Desktop Version
International Whale Shark Day
International Whale Shark Day
Today, International Whale Shark Day makes room for the world"s largest fish. Despite their name, whale sharks are not whales but fish, reaching lengths of up to 18 metres and weighing around 18 metric tonnes. Found in warm tropical seas, they glide through the water with their mouths open, filtering plankton, fish eggs and other tiny prey. This species" distinctive white-spot patterns are unique to each individual, much like human fingerprints.Desktop Version

The blue, glacier-fed waters of the Kasilof River, Alaska, USA
Seen from above, the Kasilof River winds like a ribbon of turquoise through Alaska"s Kenai Peninsula. Flowing about 27 kilometres before emptying into Cook Inlet, the river is shorter than its famous neighbour, the Kenai, but no less remarkable.Desktop Version
Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus
Fungi often go unnoticed beneath forest floors, lawns and fallen leaves, yet their underground threads help recycle nutrients and support healthy ecosystems. The mushrooms we see are only the fruiting bodies of much larger organisms. They appear briefly, release spores, then disappear from sight. Unlike plants, fungi belong to a kingdom of their own. Some species even glow, while others form partnerships with trees.Desktop Version

World Elephant Day
World Elephant Day
On August 12, World Elephant Day invites us to pause and consider not just the size of these animals, but the depth of their lives. In places like Amboseli National Park in Kenya—captured in this image—a herd doesn"t simply pass through the landscape; it remembers it. Matriarchs guide their families between water sources, tracing routes shaped as much by memory as by terrain.Desktop Version
Pink dahlia flower
Pink dahlia flower
Some flowers quietly fill a garden. Dahlias arrive as if they have been cast in the lead role. Native to Mexico, these members of the daisy family come in more than 57,000 cultivated varieties, thanks in part to their unusual genetics. Dahlias are octoploids, meaning they have eight sets of chromosomes, which helps create blooms that range from tiny buttons to 36 centimetres across.Desktop Version
Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
At first glance, today"s image looks more like a drowned woodland than a lake. Bare tree trunks emerge from the water, their reflections stretching across the surface as the Grampians glow in the distance. This is Lake Fyans, an artificial reservoir on the edge of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park in Victoria, Australia. Popular with boaters, anglers, sailors and water skiers, it offers a front-row seat to one of the country"s most striking landscapes.Desktop Version

Today, it remains one of northern Germany"s best-known coastal landmarks. Visitors who climb its 157 steps are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding scenery.Desktop Version
