24 Feb 2024Almond trees in full bloom, California, USA

In the sun-kissed orchards of the Golden State, almonds reign supreme, enticing the taste buds and adorning the natural surroundings. California grows 80 percent of the world"s commercial supply, and 100 percent of the United States". Almonds have heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and are nutritional powerhouses, packed with fibre, protein and an array of vitamins and minerals. During February and March, in California"s Central Valley, these seeds—not nuts—emerge from the delicate blossoms of the almond tree and mature within a protective, fuzzy hull. These trees, which belong to the rose family, burst into a spectacle of beauty during full bloom, with fragrant flowers painting the orchards in hues of white and pink.Desktop Version

14 May 2025Porto Flavia, Sulcis-Iglesiente, Sardinia, Italy

Most ports rely on docks and cranes that extend into the shoreline. Porto Flavia in the Sulcis-Iglesiente region, however, took a completely different approach. This engineering marvel transformed a cliff into a gateway for Sardinia"s ore industry. Mining in Sulcis-Iglesiente has a history dating back thousands of years, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the industrial boom in the 20th century. Lead, zinc, coal, sulphur, barium and silver were extracted from these rugged hills but transporting them was a logistical nightmare. Ore had to be hauled by cart, loaded onto small boats and then transferred to larger ships—a slow, costly and inefficient process.Desktop Version

27 Oct 2024British Summer Time ends

Time is of the essence today: the last Sunday of October marks the end of British Summer Time. At 2 AM this morning, the clocks fell back one hour, meaning there was an extra hour of sleep. While the idea of summer time was mentioned in 1784 by American inventor Benjamin Franklin, the first serious proposal for changing the clocks in the United Kingdom came from British builder William Willett in 1907. He valued having more daylight and felt so strongly about this that he published a pamphlet called "The Waste of Daylight. Over time, many countries adopted the practice to give people more daylight in the evenings during the summer months.Desktop Version

19 Dec 2024Sibiu Christmas Market, Romania

As the winter chill sets in, the city of Sibiu transforms into a dazzling holiday wonderland as it hosts one of Romania"s most popular Christmas markets. The Sibiu Christmas Market, known in Romanian as Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu, is held in the central square from the end of November until early January. Sparkling strings of lights drape across the square, seen in today"s image, creating a canopy that bathes the cobblestone streets in a warm, festive glow. There also stands a beautifully lit Christmas tree, surrounded by charming wooden huts selling everything from handcrafted ornaments to locally made treats like cozonac, a traditional Romanian sweet bread; vin fiert, an aromatic mulled wine; and covrigi, a type of pretzel served warm and sprinkled with salt.Desktop Version

9 Dec 2024Guanacos, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Pictured here today are the guanacos in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile. These herbivores may look like llamas in disguise, but they"re truly wild at heart unlike their domesticated cousins. Found roaming the Andes mountains and Patagonian plains, these long-legged wanderers are South America"s answer to the camel family—minus the humps but with double the resilience. These adaptable creatures can thrive in extreme environments, from the dry Atacama Desert to the chilly, windswept plains of Patagonia. In fact, their name even comes from the Quechua word "huanaco," meaning a wild animal or an animal that runs fast. And run they do, at up to 35 miles per hour!Desktop Version

29 Jul 2024Tiger siblings in Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, India

We"re off to a roaring start! Today"s image features a pair of tigers in Jim Corbett National Park in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and covers approximately 201 square miles. It was later renamed Corbett National Park in honour of Jim Corbett, a conservationist who played a crucial role in its creation. The park was the first to be included in Project Tiger, India"s initiative to protect endangered tigers. This park has 256 Bengal tigers, master predators that play an essential role in the park"s ecosystem. Tigers are at the top of the food chain, often hunting large animals like water buffalo and even small elephants. Here visitors can book a jungle safari, accompanied by forest rangers.Desktop Version

4 Oct 2023World Space Week

World Space Week—observed from October 4 to 10 every year—serves as an opportunity to educate individuals worldwide about the multitude of benefits that emanate from space exploration and technology and to celebrate humanity"s extraterrestrial achievements. A stunning cosmic spectacle that deserves mention is the Tarantula Nebula, captured by NASA"s James Webb Space Telescope. The Tarantula Nebula is the most luminous and largest star-forming region in a galaxy group called the Local Group, which is also home to our own Milky Way. The nebula"s colossal size and dynamic energy offer plenty of compelling material for cosmologists and stargazers.Desktop Version

2 Feb 2025Alpine marmot

The alpine marmot in today"s image is a close relative of the groundhog, which is another species of marmot. The alpine marmot is native to central and southern Europe and can be found at altitudes between 800 and 3,200 metres. Weighing between 1.9 and 7 kilograms, they are easily recognised by their round faces, short tails and dense fur that helps them endure chilly mountain climates. When it comes to food, these creatures are herbivores with simple taste. They spend their summer days grazing on grasses, herbs, roots, seeds and flowers, storing up energy for their big event: a roughly nine-month hibernation party. Sometimes they eat grain, worms, insects and spiders. Beyond their hibernation habits, alpine marmots live a highly social lifestyle. They communicate through a variety of vocal sounds, including sharp whistles to warn the group of predators like eagles or foxes. This strong sense of community is key to their survival.Desktop Version

27 Oct 2023Sligachan Old Bridge, Isle of Skye, Scotland

The enchanting Isle of Skye in Scotland is home to the Sligachan Old Bridge, engineered and built by Thomas Telford, a prolific Scottish civil engineer, in the early 1800s. 16 Feb 2024Female pyrrhuloxia in Texas, USA

In today"s image is a pyrrhuloxia—also known as the desert cardinal—a songbird that lives in the deserts of northern Mexico and the American Southwest. The female cardinal, while lacking the flamboyant colouration of her male counterpart, possesses a unique charm in her own right. While she shares the distinctive crest and red bill with the male, her plumage is a more subdued yellowish, cinnamon-brown, adorned only with subtle touches of red. Unlike females in many bird species, the female cardinal is an accomplished vocalist, harmonising with the melodies of the male.Desktop Version

11 Mar 2024Koala

Say hello to the koala! Don"t be fooled though; while this sleeping creature may look like a teddy bear"s long-lost cousin, it is actually not a bear at all, it’s a marsupial, which means it carries its young in a pouch. Native to Australia, these furry critters spend most of their time catching some Z"s in the treetops. They can sleep up to 20 hours a day, which helps them conserve the little energy they get from their eucalyptus-based diet. Koalas move slowly when awake, spending most of their time tucked into nooks in trees and have a lower body temperature than other animals of their size. Interestingly, each koala has a unique set of fingerprints, just like us humans. So, if you ever get the chance to visit Australia, make sure to get some koala-ty time!Desktop Version

28 Oct 2023Castilla-La Mancha, Spain

In the town of Consuegra, the echoes of the adventures of Don Quixote—the hero of the Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes—still linger. This tourist destination in Castilla-La Mancha is famous for a small mountain range, known as Cerro Calderico. The range is crowned with 12 white windmills, perhaps the very same that inspired Cervantes to picture them as an army of giants. With their stone walls and wooden blades, some of these windmills date back to the 16th century. Now, they are living relics of a bygone era when they were used to grind grain.Desktop Version

31 Dec 2024Hogmanay

When it comes to ringing in the New Year, Scotland takes the cake—or perhaps the haggis, its national dish. From torchlight processions to street ceilidhs, Hogmanay is the New Year"s Eve celebration that says, "Why settle for one night of celebration when you can have three?" The term "Hogmanay" has murky origins—some link it to the French "hoguinané," which means "gala day," others to Norse or Gaelic roots. But what it means today is clear: an unmissable celebration filled with fireworks, folk songs and feasting. This year, the festivities kicked off on December 29 with a dramatic torchlight procession.Desktop Version

So, are you ready for a wild adventure that"ll send chills down your spine, but in a good way?Desktop Version

Birds come in many shapes and colours, but few are as striking as the plum-headed parakeet, photographed at Shimoga, Karnataka, India, in today"s image.
