World Donkey Day
World Donkey Day
World Donkey Day celebrates one of humanity"s most quietly capable partners. Donkeys have worked alongside people for thousands of years, prized for their endurance, sharp memory and sure-footed confidence on rugged ground. Often mistaken for stubborn, they are actually careful thinkers—pausing to assess risk rather than rushing into trouble.Desktop Version

Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
As night settles over Suwon, South Korea, the old city wall pictured here shows that function doesn"t necessarily cancel out beauty—it can create it. Built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Hwaseong Fortress was more than a barrier. It was policy in stone: a reform-minded push for a leaner, better-run state, driven by practicality and a deeply personal motive. Jeongjo ordered its construction to honour his father while strengthening a kingdom that wanted smarter systems, not just thicker walls.Desktop Version

Pink apple blossoms, Avila Beach, California, United States
Spring brings apple trees to life with clouds of soft pink blossoms. Their delicate petals brighten orchards and hillsides, standing out against clear blue skies as the season shifts from winter towards warmer days. These blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, helping fruit trees produce the apples that will grow later in the year.Desktop Version

Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
Set in Guatemala"s western highlands, Lake Atitlán fills a vast volcanic caldera. Its deep blue waters are framed by steep crater walls and the cone-shaped volcanoes Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro. Ruins of Dunseverick Castle, Northern Ireland
Ruins of Dunseverick Castle, Northern Ireland
At Dunseverick Castle, history hangs on—literally. Wall fragments cling to a basalt stack above the Atlantic, proving that even ruins can hold their ground. Two thousand years ago, it marked the end of the Slige Midluachra, one of Ireland"s five great roads, linking travellers to the royal seat at Hill of Tara. In the 5th century, Saint Patrick is said to have visited and baptised a local man, Olcán, here. Tradition holds that the Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny), used for crowning Irish kings, was taken from this shore for Scotland.Desktop Version

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States
What do you call a place where the rocks do the climbing, and humans try to keep up? Welcome to Smith Rock State Park in Oregon, United States, where cliffs rise fast and excuses fall faster. It sits inside the 41-kilometre-long Crooked River Caldera, shaped by multiple volcanic eruptions. Its welded tuff cliffs are made from compressed volcanic ash that cooled under pressure. The Crooked River carved the canyon, while formations like the Spire rise over 200 metres.Desktop Version
World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Penguins usually bring Antarctica to mind, but these endearing flightless seabirds don"t always follow the ice. On World Penguin Day, the Galápagos penguins pictured here offer a vivid counterpoint. Found only in the Galápagos Islands—a volcanic archipelago more than 950 kilometres off Ecuador"s coast—this species lives farther north than any other penguin. Cool, nutrient‑rich ocean currents make this equatorial habitat possible by supplying food and keeping surrounding waters within survivable temperatures. Compact and agile, these birds spend much of the day in the water to stay cool.Desktop Version
European hedgehog, France
European hedgehog, France
Spring arrives with a small, spiky ambassador: the European hedgehog, spotted here in France. Part cuddle, part survival gear, this tiny forager is mostly nocturnal and usually solitary, guided mainly by smell and sound. Its job description is simple: roam, sniff through leaf litter and vacuum up invertebrates like worms, beetles, slugs and caterpillars—the kind of snacks that keep ecosystems running and gardeners smiling. When danger shows up, it doesn"t negotiate or flee. It curls into a tight ball and lets its spines do the talking.Desktop Version
International Museum Day
International Museum Day
You walk into a museum, and suddenly time shifts. A fossil hints at life millions of years ago. A gemstone reflects geological change you can"t see. That sense of connection is exactly what International Museum Day, created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, aims to celebrate.Desktop Version
Khairul Manazil, New Delhi
Khairul Manazil, New Delhi
Delhi has no shortage of monuments built by emperors. But opposite Purana Qila stands one that tells a different story. Built in 1561–62, Khairul Manazil was commissioned by Maham Anga, Emperor Akbar"s powerful foster mother and wet nurse. Its name, meaning "the most auspicious of houses," has a clever hidden detail. The Persian letters of Khairul Manazil form a chronogram corresponding to 969 AH, the Islamic calendar year of its completion.Desktop Version
World Heritage Day
World Heritage Day
Today, on World Heritage Day, attention turns to places that tell humanity"s shared story—protected for their exceptional cultural or natural value. One of them rises from volcanic stone on Easter Island, Chile. At Rano Raraku, the slopes of an extinct volcano became the workshop where nearly all of the island"s famous moai were carved. The image captures this remarkable quarry, where half-finished figures emerge from the rock, frozen mid-creation.Desktop Version

Lupine flowers in bloom, Northern California, United States
As spring sweeps across Northern California in the United States, the landscape is transformed by the vibrant displays of lupine flowers in shades of blue, purple and white. Flourishing in the region"s Mediterranean climate, these wildflowers provide a vital source of nectar for pollinators such as bees, butterflies and beetles. With over 200 species found worldwide, lupines range from coastal varieties to those that thrive in mountain meadows. Beyond their striking beauty, lupines are essential to the ecosystem: by fixing nitrogen underground, they enrich soil fertility and support the growth of surrounding plants, even in nutrient-poor environments.Desktop Version

World Water Day
World Water Day
Today is World Water Day, declared by the UN in 1992 and first observed the following year. Humanity could no longer drift along—we had to safeguard the very currents that keep us alive. Few places capture that urgency like Lake Tanganyika, in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. From space, it"s a 676-kilometre ribbon linking Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. At the shoreline, it"s a 10-million-year-old rift basin, formed as the Earth"s crust slowly pulled apart.Desktop Version

Tremola Road on the Saint Gotthard Pass in Airolo, Switzerland
Follow the glowing ribbon of switchbacks and you"ll find one of Switzerland"s most legendary drives: Tremola Road, the historic southern approach to the Saint Gotthard Pass, above Airolo. Built in the early 1800s and largely shaped by a 1951 reconstruction, this route is celebrated as Switzerland"s longest monument to historic road construction. Its showstopper stretch climbs about 300 metres in just 4 kilometres, curling through 24 named hairpin bends on granite cobblestones, with sturdy retaining walls edging the way. Overall, it runs about 11 kilometres and features 37 bends in total. Take it slow—every curve feels like a step back in time, trading speed for sweeping mountain scenery and big views towards the upper Leventina Valley. Whether you"re driving, cycling or pulling over for photos, look for the Grand Tour of Switzerland photo spot framing those iconic zigzags.Desktop Version
International Day of Forests
International Day of Forests
If Earth had a maintenance crew, forests would be spearheading it. They absorb carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, safeguard biodiversity, influence rainfall and help maintain clean water supplies. They still cover about 31% of the world"s land area, yet their continued decline shows how vulnerable these natural systems have become. Vast stretches continue to be cleared for agriculture, infrastructure and resource extraction, weakening ecosystems at an alarming rate.Desktop Version
