World Bee Day
A soft buzz and a dusting of pollen can shape the future of our food. World Bee Day, observed each year on 20 May, celebrates pollinators like the bumble bee pictured here during its quiet yet essential work. Unlike many insects, bumble bees use "buzz pollination," vibrating their flight muscles to shake pollen from flowers—a method vital for crops such as tomatoes, peppers and blueberries.Desktop Version

Arch and Milky Way, Alabama Hills, California, United States
In today"s image, the granite arches of the Alabama Hills frame the Milky Way over a rugged landscape in California"s eastern Sierra Nevada. Famous for its rounded boulders and weathered rock formations, this area formed when molten rock cooled deep underground around 100 million years ago. Water and wind gradually shaped the stone into the smooth shapes seen today. Visitors can explore the natural arches, hike among the rocks, capture photographs of the unique landscape, ride horses or mountain bikes and enjoy seasonal displays of wildflowers.Desktop Version

Hnausapollur crater lake, Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Iceland
From above, the lake"s smooth surface contrasts sharply with the rugged ground surrounding it. Hnausapollur crater lake—also known as Bláhylur—lies in the heart of Fjallabak Nature Reserve, a remote area of Iceland"s highlands shaped more by volcanic activity than by human settlement. The crater formed when magma met groundwater, triggering an explosion that carved out the circular basin visible today.Desktop Version

Rice fields at Sapa, Lào Cai, Vietnam
Sunlight cuts through drifting clouds and settles on the terraced slopes of Sapa, where rice fields cascade down the mountainsides like a living staircase. Located in Vietnam"s Lào Cai province, this highland region is shaped as much by human hands as by nature. Generations of farmers from local ethnic communities such as the Hmong have carved and maintained these terraces for centuries, guiding water across steep hillsides to sustain each growing season.Desktop Version
World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day
Today is World Oceans Day, so follow the lead of a creature that goes wherever the water takes it. Want to spot a lion"s mane jellyfish? Look in cold northern seas. Its bell is split into eight lobes, and beneath it hang long tentacles and oral arms. As it drifts with the current, stinging cells snare plankton and small fish. For humans, the sting can be painful. Reactions vary, and even a washed-up tentacle can still hurt. The rule is simple: admire it, then leave it alone. Some lion"s manes in Arctic waters have bells more than 1.8 metres across, but most sightings are smaller animals near shore after storms or strong currents.Desktop Version
Pollinator Week
Pollinator Week
Zoom in on the small transaction that keeps landscapes alive: a butterfly on a yellow flower, sipping nectar. While it feeds, pollen dusts its body and hitches a ride to the next bloom—one of the quiet ways flowering plants reproduce. Pollinators are not only bees. Butterflies, birds, bats, beetles and many others help move pollen, supporting wild plants and many of the fruits and vegetables we eat.Desktop Version
Mallard duck
Mallard duck
At daybreak, the mallard glides over the still water like a brush across a canvas. Its shimmering plumage—emerald-green head in the male, speckled brown coat in the female—catches the first light. It can be seen from the marshes of the Camargue to the urban canals of Amsterdam, a faithful companion of Europe"s aquatic landscapes.Desktop Version
1953 Mount Everest Expedition
1953 Mount Everest Expedition
In Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal, Mount Everest rises into view, calm and unmoved as evening settles in. But on 29 May, 1953, that stillness was broken. After years of planning and weeks of climbing, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay reached the summit. At more than 8,800 metres above sea level, they became the first people known to have stood at Earth"s highest point.Desktop Version
Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy
Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy

Snowy egret preening, Florida, United States
Poetic name, poetic appearance. Meet the snowy egret, whose all-white plumage and bright yellow "slippers" on black legs give it a striking look. Formentor Lighthouse, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
Formentor Lighthouse, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
At Mallorca"s far northern tip, in Spain"s Balearic Islands, the Formentor Lighthouse stands on the sheer cliffs of Cap de Formentor. This exposed headland is often called the "Meeting of the Winds." Built in 1863 and first lit on 30 September of that year, the lighthouse rises more than 200 metres above the Mediterranean Sea and is reached by a narrow, switchback road more than 10 kilometres from Port de Pollença. Under your feet is pale limestone—rock formed from ancient marine life and later lifted and carved by erosion into dramatic faces, sea caves and natural arches. This rugged geology gives rise to the area"s stark beauty and sense of isolation. Want to earn the view? Follow one of the peninsula"s hiking routes or tackle the short, steep climb to Talaia d"Albercutx for a watchtower panorama before continuing to the lighthouse. Keep an eye on the slopes: wild goats, descended from early domestic herds, spring across the ledges with effortless balance.Desktop Version
Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti
Not every freedom fighter carried a weapon. He carried an idea. Gandhi Jayanti marks the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born in Porbandar, India, in 1869. He became a key leader of India"s independence movement through satyagraha, his philosophy of truth and non-violent resistance. His 1930 Salt March showed how something as ordinary as salt could become a powerful symbol of protest. His influence eventually reached far beyond India, inspiring movements built around peaceful resistance.Desktop Version
Earth Day
Earth Day
Earth Day didn"t knock gently. It kicked the door wide open. In 1970, oilsoaked beaches, burning rivers and toxic air mobilised millions into street protests. When looking away was no longer an option, conservation was forced onto political agendas, sparking landmark environmental laws and flipping planetcare from fringe concern to global priority. Every 22 April, over 190 countries pause, reflect and reassess.Desktop Version

Natchez Trace Parkway, Mississippi, United States
Natchez Trace Parkway, Mississippi, United States
Today"s image features the Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo, United States. Long before modern maps, bison and other large animals carved the first paths here, later followed by Native Americans and, much later, "Kaintuck" traders walking hundreds of kilometres home after selling goods along the Mississippi. The route reflects around 10,000 years of human history and even links to Andrew Jackson, who travelled it during the War of 1812.Desktop Version
European Day of Parks

International Tea Day
International Tea Day
International Tea Day celebrates a drink that connects daily rituals to ancient landscapes. Just one look at the terraced tea fields of Sichuan Province, China, shows how deep those roots run. This misty region in southwest China is one of the earliest centres of tea culture, where people drank and cultivated tea more than 2,000 years ago. On nearby Mengding Mountain, a scholar named Wu Lizhen planted some of the world"s first managed tea gardens during the Han Dynasty, laying the groundwork for generations of growers.Desktop Version
Hawksbill Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, United States
Hawksbill Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, United States
How high is high enough for a great view? In the eastern United States, it doesn"t take much. Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, United States, at more than 1,200 metres, showing how these older mountains rely on openness, not elevation. The park"s establishment in 1935 involved reforestation after extensive farming and logging. Today, much of that land has returned to forest, supporting mixed hardwoods, mountain laurel and rhododendron. What else? Some of the rocks found here date back over 1 billion years, among the oldest in the state. The park shelters over 200 bird species and 32 species of fish and remains dog-friendly, allowing pets in campgrounds and on most trails.Desktop Version
International Bat Appreciation Day
International Bat Appreciation Day
On 17 April, International Bat Appreciation Day flips its cape to the planet"s night shift: bats. With more than 1,400 species on every continent except Antarctica, these winged mammals keep ecosystems balanced. They"ve been on Earth for over 50 million years, and only three species are true vampires. Found only in the Americas, these bats feed on blood, while the rest survive on insects, fruit, nectar or pollen. In Texas, Bracken Cave can host up to 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats in summer. Many gulp crop pests, cutting pesticide use; others pollinate wild agaves and disperse seeds that help forests rebound.Desktop Version
