Yosemite National Park, California, USA
Yosemite National Park, California, USA
There"s a reason why famed American photographer Ansel Adams fell in love with Yosemite National Park in the United States: vistas like today"s image of Half Dome. Located in central California"s Sierra Nevada mountain range, the park has been a popular destination for artists, mountaineers, settlers and nature lovers since the mid-1800s. To preserve the area and protect it from logging and overgrazing by cattle, the US Congress designated Yosemite a national park on this day in 1890. It"s one of the most visited parks in the United States, with annual attendance exceeding 3 million, and it"s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Desktop Version

Marigny, New Orleans, USA
Let the good times roll! Also called Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras is celebrated to live life to the fullest before fasting and giving up other indulgences for Lent—though many modern celebrators are just happy to use the occasion as an excuse to party. During the festive revelry of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the tradition of "throws" adds an extra layer of excitement to the celebrations. Throws are strings of beads, doubloons, cups and an assortment of trinkets, distributed or hurled from colourful floats to the exuberant spectators lining the streets. These throws are a cherished part of the Mardi Gras experience. Ready to make merry and join the parade?Desktop Version
Baby giant panda, China
Baby giant panda, China
Featured here are nature"s fluffiest treasures: the giant panda. Native to China, these iconic black-and-white bears are more than just adorable. They play a crucial role in their bamboo forest ecosystem by dispersing seeds and fostering new vegetation growth, which benefits countless plants and animals. Once classified as "endangered," their conservation status was upgraded to "vulnerable" in 2016, thanks to dedicated efforts such as breeding programmes, reforestation initiatives and habitat preservation. Despite this progress, fewer than 2,000 pandas remain in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and farming. Efforts to protect bamboo forests and improve breeding programmes are vital to their survival. While pandas may be cute and cuddly, they"re also environmental heroes. Their conservation helps preserve biodiversity in their natural habitats. Let"s work together to protect these gentle giants!Desktop Version
Bowling Ball Beach, California, USA
Bowling Ball Beach, California, USA
Welcome to nature"s bowling alley. Bowling Ball Beach on the Mendocino Coast in California is named after the striking rock formations strewn across the shore. These sandstone balls—a phenomenon known as concretions—formed over millions of years as sedimentary layers built up around a central core of sand and stone held together by mineral cements. Erosion gradually wore away the outer layers to expose the spherical shapes we see today. This created a fascinating spectacle that only appears at low tide. Concretions are rare, and there has been plenty of wild speculation about where they come from, with some believing them to be extraterrestrial debris while others wondering if they are dinosaur fossils. The answer, however, is quite simple: it is the forces of nature at play.Desktop Version

Happy International Day of Forests!
Happy International Day of Forests!
March 21 marks the International Day of Forests, a global observance aimed at celebrating the vital role forests play in supporting biodiversity and combating climate change. First established by the United Nations in 2013, this day encourages worldwide efforts, such as tree-planting campaigns, to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees for future generations. One of the most breathtaking places to observe the richness of forests is the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah on the Malaysian island of Borneo, starring in today"s image. This over 400-square-kilometre sanctuary is home to an ancient, 130-million-year-old rainforest, teeming with rare species like Bornean orangutans, clouded leopards and over 270 bird species.Desktop Version

Highway through Xitai Jinaier Lake, Qinghai Province, China
Cutting a surreal path through the high-altitude deserts of western China, Xitai Jinaier Lake (also known as West Taijinar Lake) is a striking salt lake in the remote Qaidam Basin. A stretch of National Highway 315 runs directly across its shallow waters, creating the illusion of a road floating between two worlds. On one side, the water often appears deep blue; on the other, a softer green hue, a contrast shaped by differing mineral concentrations in the brine.Desktop Version

Golden larches and Prusik Peak, Enchantments, Washington
Golden larches and Prusik Peak, Enchantments, Washington
Washington State"s Enchantments region boasts more than 700 alpine lakes and ponds. Long before European settlers arrived, the Enchantments were home to Native American tribes such as the Yakima, Chinook, and Wenatchi. Waves of logging and mining in the 1900s transformed much of the landscape. Today, herds of mountain goats graze across the park, and ptarmigans roost in trees. The land undergoes transformation as the needles of the larch trees turn a shade of gold, casting a warm glow on the rocky terrain. Standing out in the Enchantments is Prusik Peak, a hidden gem among the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington"s Cascade Range, which serves as a symbol of both its domain and the Enchantments. It"s a wonderful site for experienced hikers and rock climbers, with a variety of climbs ranging from difficult to more common, attracting either skilled mountaineers or adventurers" intent on putting their skills to the test.Desktop Version

Río Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil
Río Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil
The Río Negro, originating in Colombia, is one of dozens of tributaries that flow into the massive Amazon River. Its name, which means black river, comes from its dark appearance when viewed from a distance. As a result, the water can reflect the colourful hues of the sky overhead, such as the vibrant blue and partial rainbow seen here. The colour of the river comes from the high concentration of humic acid, thanks to decomposing organic matter that seeps from nearby swamps. As one of the largest northern-bank tributaries of the Amazon River, the Río Negro plays a crucial role in the complex Amazon basin ecosystem. The river is home to many plants and animals, including the critically endangered Brazilian barefaced tamarin, the giant river otter and nearly 700 species of fish.Desktop Version
