Celebrating Pi Day
Celebrating Pi Day
Long before pi had a name, people were drawn to its mystery. Every year on March 14, Pi Day highlights one of math"s most recognisable constants. The date reflects the first three digits of pi (π), the ratio of a circle"s circumference to its diameter: 3.14. Pi"s infinite, nonrepeating decimal has fascinated thinkers for a long time. The modern celebration began in 1988, when physicist Larry Shaw marked the day with a fitting tribute: serving pie.Desktop Version
World Water Day
World Water Day
Today is World Water Day, declared by the UN in 1992 and first observed the following year. Humanity could no longer drift along—we had to safeguard the very currents that keep us alive. Few places capture that urgency like Lake Tanganyika, in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. From space, it"s a 676-kilometre ribbon linking Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. At the shoreline, it"s a 10-million-year-old rift basin, formed as the Earth"s crust slowly pulled apart.Desktop Version
Happy St. Patricks Day!
Happy St. Patricks Day!
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain around the late 4th or early 5th century. According to legend, at 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and brought to Ireland as a slave. After escaping, he returned home and later became a missionary, spreading Christianity across the island. He is famously associated, according to later tradition, with using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. His legacy of faith has made St. Patrick"s Day a global celebration.Desktop Version

Armbrug bridge, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Armbrug bridge, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Some bridges in Amsterdam just get you across a canal. The Armbrug does more—it seems to wave hello as you pass. Nestled over the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal, its name, meaning "arm bridge," refers to the nearby Oudezijds Armsteeg (Old Side Arm Alley), not a literal limb, but it"s easy to imagine it greeting cyclists and pedestrians along the way.Desktop Version

International Bat Appreciation Day
International Bat Appreciation Day
On April 17, International Bat Appreciation Day flips its cape to the planet"s night shift: bats. With more than 1,400 species on every continent except Antarctica, these winged mammals keep ecosystems balanced. They"ve been on Earth for over 50 million years, and only three species are true vampires. Found only in the Americas, these bats feed on blood, while the rest survive on insects, fruit, nectar or pollen. In Canada, bats such as the little brown bat and the big brown bat play a key role in controlling insect populations, consuming vast numbers of mosquitoes and agricultural pests each night, supporting both forests and farmlands.Desktop Version
International Day of Forests
International Day of Forests
If Earth had a maintenance crew, forests would be spearheading it. They absorb carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, safeguard biodiversity, influence rainfall and help maintain clean water supplies. They still cover about 31% of the world"s land area, yet their continued decline shows how vulnerable these natural systems have become. Vast stretches continue to be cleared for agriculture, infrastructure and resource extraction, weakening ecosystems at an alarming rate.Desktop Version

Horseshoe Falls illuminated at night in Niagara Falls, Ontario
People have been coming to Niagara Falls, on the Canada-US border, for centuries to admire the view. A few, however, decided admiring it from a safe distance was overrated. In 1901, Annie Edson Taylor climbed into a barrel and became the first recorded person to survive going over the Falls. Others followed with their own stunts, although such attempts are now illegal. The Falls have also inspired artists, filmmakers and musicians, with Hollywood giving them a starring role in "Niagara" (1953), featuring Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten.Desktop Version
