Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a chronicle of Spain"s layered history. It began as a church built by the Germanic Visigoths, before being transformed into a mosque in 784 CE by Abd al-Rahman I, founder of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. Its vast hypostyle hall, a space supported by rows of columns, features the famous red-and-white arches shown here. Today, it contains more than 850 columns, many reused from Roman and earlier Visigothic structures.Desktop Version
Celebrating Yi Peng
Celebrating Yi Peng
What would you wish for if a single lantern could carry it skyward? Tonight, in northern Thailand, the Yi Peng festival offers that chance. This centuries-old Lanna tradition celebrates the twelfth lunar month with glowing paper lanterns—khom loi—that are released to honour the Buddha. Each lantern is believed to carry away misfortune and light the way toward a brighter future. Children steady the lantern frames, elders whisper blessings and the crowd pauses as hundreds of lights drift higher than the trees. Farther south, the same full moon watches over Loy Krathong, a sister festival, where candlelit rafts glide across the water.Desktop Version
Darwin Day
Darwin Day
Darwin Day marks more than a birthday—it marks a shift in thinking. Charles Darwin"s observations connected variation, the survival of individuals best suited to their environment, and inheritance in ways science still builds on. His legacy rests on years of studying variation—finches, fossils, barnacles—and recognising patterns others had overlooked. When "On the Origin of Species" was published in 1859, it offered a framework explaining how species evolve through natural selection.Desktop Version

Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Today we celebrate the birthday of Ansel Adams, an American photographer whose vision helped shape the world"s perception of Yosemite National Park, which lies just across the border in California. Yosemite is renowned for its granite walls, dramatic waterfalls and striking light, all of which have inspired generations of artists. One of its most intriguing sights is the Firefall, a term that refers to two distinct events in the park"s history. For decades, visitors gathered at Glacier Point to watch an artificial Firefall, in which embers were pushed off the cliff in a glowing stream of fire.Desktop Version

Milwaukee City Hall, Wisconsin, United States
Milwaukee City Hall, in the state of Wisconsin, is one of the city"s most recognisable landmarks. Completed in 1895, this towering Flemish Renaissance Revival masterpiece doesn"t just dominate the skyline; it defines it. For nearly eight decades, it stood as the city"s tallest building, a title it proudly held until 1973. Designed by architect Henry C. Koch, this hall blends German-inspired architecture with Milwaukee"s own historic influences. That connection isn"t accidental—its design pays tribute to the city"s strong German heritage, which shaped much of the surrounding neighbourhood as well.Desktop Version
Happy Valentines Day!
Happy Valentines Day!
Valentine"s Day celebrates the heart in all its forms—love that is bold or tender, hopeful or quietly vulnerable. Few symbols capture this emotion as naturally as the bleeding heart flower, pictured here. With its unmistakable heart-shaped blooms, the plant emerges each spring, growing up to 60 centimetres tall and spreading nearly 75 centimetres wide, creating a graceful, almost poetic display.Desktop Version

Ever caught siblings plotting? In Karula National Park, Estonia, it looks as though these two red fox kits froze mid-conspiracy, their expressions mirrored in curiosity and caution. They"re not just springtime fluff; they"re apprentices in survival. Born in litters averaging four to six kits, foxes grow quickly, their underground den becoming their wrestling ring, classroom and testing ground. Older kits often help feed, guard and teach the younger ones, turning play into practice and mischief into muscle memory. In their families, siblings are not background—they"re backup.Desktop Version

Emerald Bay and Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, California, United States
Emerald Bay and Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, California, United States
You know a place holds stories when geologists, filmmakers and local folklore all claim it for different reasons. Lake Tahoe, straddling the border between California and Nevada, fits that bill perfectly. Formed during the Ice Age, the lake was shaped by faulting and glacial carving that created its deep basin. It is now one of the deepest freshwater lakes in the United States. For generations, the Washoe people lived around these clear waters, fishing and gathering seasonally. Centuries later, miners arrived, steamboats crossed the water and Tahoe shifted from a resource hub to a year-round retreat.Desktop Version
Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Xwejni Bay in Gozo, Malta, has a way of making everyday elements look like a quiet choreography between sea, stone and sun. You can"t help but pause and look closer, right? Centuries back, families began carving these limestone pans, shaping hundreds of basins that trap seawater with each wave. Once the water settles in, the sun"s heat does the rest, slowly evaporating it into natural Mediterranean salt. Gozo became a salt-making hub because its limestone coast is easy to shape, and its warm, dry summers keep the crystallisation process steady. The first crystals form around May, marking the beginning of the harvesting season. Workers rake the salt by hand, sweep it with brooms and brushes, gather it into small piles to dry for another day, then bag it and store it in the caves.Desktop Version
Leshan Giant Buddha, Sichuan, China
Leshan Giant Buddha, Sichuan, China
There are big statues—and then there"s the Leshan Giant Buddha. Carved into a riverside cliff at the confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu Rivers in Sichuan, China, this statue is an ancient engineering marvel. Construction began in 713 CE under a monk named Hai Tong, who hoped that the Buddha"s presence would calm dangerous river currents that threatened passing boats. He was so devoted that when funding ran out, he reportedly gouged out his own eyes to prove his sincerity. Construction took roughly 90 years and was completed long after Hai Tong"s death. At 71 metres tall, it is the largest stone Buddha in the world. Its shoulders stretch about 28 metres wide, its ears measure nearly 7 metres long and each foot extends over 8 metres. Drainage channels built inside the statue protect it from erosion, helping explain its remarkable preservation for more than 12 centuries.Desktop Version

A mute swan reflected on tranquil waters
Swans are admired for their looks, but there is more going on than a calm, graceful glide over the water. These strong, territorial birds have a long history of human involvement. Introduced to Canada from Europe in the 1870s for parks and estates, mute swans established feral populations that now live year-round in parts of Ontario and beyond.Desktop Version

Agriculture in Saskatchewan
Agriculture in Saskatchewan
Picture a farmer watching dark clouds build over the Saskatchewan plains. The crops have already been harvested, but the weather still matters. Where does the grain go next? Often, into grain elevators and storage bins beside fields and railway lines, where it stays protected from rain, moisture and the powerful prairie storms that can arrive with little warning. These storage structures have supported Saskatchewan agriculture for generations, helping to preserve grain quality until it is ready for transport or sale. This is one reason the province has earned the nickname "Canada"s breadbasket."Desktop Version
