World Rivers Day
World Rivers Day
If you are a nature enthusiast, an environmental advocate, or just simply enjoy listening to the sound of rumbling rivers, you might like to know that today is World Rivers Day. Following the United Nations" "Water for Life Decade" movement between 2005 and 2015, Mark Angelo—a Canadian river conservationist, teacher, author, and speaker—proposed a global event to celebrate rivers. World Rivers Day dedicates the fourth Sunday of September each year to waterways to increase awareness of the many benefits that rivers provide to people and the planet.Desktop Version

Desert-dwelling camels have been central to lives in the United Arab Emirates for generations, upholding Emirati heritage and customs. A key mode of transportation for Bedouins to access water and supplies, camels are invaluable in traversing the sweltering sands. These dromedaries have even been used as currency to fulfil various obligations, such as dowries or zakat, an annual charitable fee in Muslim communities. They provide nourishment: camel milk is a valuable and nutritious ingredient in many recipes. Finally, camels have successfully entertained Bedouin tribes and travellers through camel racing, further showcasing the versatility of these hardy creatures.Desktop Version
Pumpkin field, Victoria, British Columbia
Pumpkin field, Victoria, British Columbia
As autumn blankets the landscape in amber hues and the chill of Halloween approaches, the time-honoured tradition of carving jack-o"-lanterns comes to life. In Canada, as Irish immigrants settled, abundant pumpkins became the ideal substitutes for the turnips and potatoes they had previously used to create lanterns. By hollowing out pumpkins and lighting them with candles, they transformed the gourds into flickering defences against evil spirits.Desktop Version

Everglades National Park, Florida, United States
Everglades National Park, Florida, United States
On Florida"s southern tip lies one of the United States" most unusual landscapes. The Everglades is not a typical swamp or river. It is a slow, shallow sheet of water that drifts south across flat grasslands toward Florida Bay, linking forests, marshes, mangroves and coastal prairies. This subtropical wilderness supports hundreds of species, including alligators, manatees and the endangered Florida panther. In 1947, the United States established the Everglades National Park, protecting over 6,100 square kilometres and shifting conservation toward preserving entire ecosystems rather than isolated landmarks.Desktop Version

Peggys Point Lighthouse
Peggys Point Lighthouse
Perched on a rugged granite outcropping, Peggys Point Lighthouse is a stoic guardian of Nova Scotia"s coast. Built in 1914, the 15-metre-tall lighthouse embodies the enduring spirit of maritime Canada. Its beacon was first turned on in 1915. The current lighthouse replaced a wooden structure made in 1868 that was damaged by Hurricane Edna in 1954. The ground floor of the building served as a post office during the summer months until 2009, when Canada Post shut down the service, citing mould growth as a hazard. The lighthouse, now automated, attracts visitors eager to glimpse into Canada"s seafaring past and feel the ocean"s spray.Desktop Version
A group of Southern gemsbok in the savannah, Botswana
A group of Southern gemsbok in the savannah, Botswana
Horns up, heads high! Featured here is a group of gemsboks, a large antelope, reigning over the sprawling savannahs in southwestern Africa. Indigenous to the arid territories of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and parts of Zimbabwe, they thrive mainly within the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. They can survive in extremely dry conditions and can go without water for weeks, getting moisture from the food they eat. Moreover, gemsboks are adept runners, achieving speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. Their distinguishing trait is their notably elongated, straight horns. Although both genders possess these formidable defences, the females" horns tend to be slightly longer and sleeker while the males" horns are thicker with broader bases. So, if you ever find yourself in the sandy plains of the Kalahari, keep an eye out for these desert gems.Desktop Version

Overlooking the Ebro delta, the peak offers views of streams and pine forests, with trails that lead into the mountains.
