World Rhinoceros Day
World Rhinoceros Day
Keep the five alive! That is the mission of World Rhinoceros Day, the International Rhino Foundation, rhino specialists, and fans around the globe. Those five species are the Javan, Sumatran, greater one-horned, black, and white rhinoceros; the latter can be seen here today and identified by its two horns and square lip. The global rhino population is estimated to be under 27,000—less than the average capacity at a Major League Baseball stadium. While there have been successful conservation efforts, ensuring the survival of these amazing animals will likely be a perpetual challenge. Habitat loss is a common issue for many animals globally, but rhinos are particularly targeted by poachers. Parks like the Shamwari Game Reserve, the site of our photo, employ anti-poaching squads to keep these rhinos safe.Desktop Version

Ring of Brodgar, Orkney, Scotland
Ring of Brodgar, Orkney, Scotland
At the heart of the Orkney Islands, an archipelago in northern Scotland, lies an ancient riddle: the Ring of Brodgar. Dating back to sometime between 2500 and 2000 BCE, this Neolithic henge—a type of ancient circular earthwork—and stone circle measure about 104 metres across. Lying on a narrow strip of land between two lochs, the site initially comprised 60 stones, although today only 36 remain. The exact purpose of the structure is still unknown; in 2008, an excavation project called the Ring of Brodgar Excavation was undertaken to try to learn more about the site, but the project has not yet reached any conclusive results. In 1999, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, which includes the Ring of Brodgar, was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are planning a trip to Scotland, consider walking amid the echoes of history at the Ring of Brodgar while the crisp Scottish air embraces you.Desktop Version

Happy Fathers Day!
Happy Fathers Day!
Today"s all about the dads. Father"s Day is the perfect time to celebrate everything they do for us, how they look after us, help us grow up and tell the best dad jokes. There are also great dads in the animal kingdom, like the foxy father seen in today"s image. Female red foxes need to stay in their dens with their young after giving birth, so males spend their time going out to bring her food. When the pups are a little older, their father takes time to play with them, teaching them survival skills they"ll need in later life, like hunting and scavenging. The foxes seen here are melanistic, a condition in animals that results in darker colouring.Desktop Version

Welcome to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance! Let the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore transport you through time. Diwali
Diwali
Diwali is a religious festival of lights, and holds widespread significance in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It is celebrated worldwide in countries with an Indian diaspora. The name "Diwali" comes from the Sanskrit term "Dipavali," which means "row of lights." The heart of Diwali lies in the lighting of oil lamps, or "diyas," illuminating homes and public spaces, creating a dazzling spectacle that signifies the triumph of knowledge over ignorance and good over evil. The present-day city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, India—believed to be the birthplace of the God of Protection, Lord Rama—holds the Guinness World Record for the largest display of oil lamps. As seen in today"s image, the "diyas" are lit on the banks of the Sarayu River during Diwali.Desktop Version
World Water Day
World Water Day
It"s World Water Day, a 31-year-old annual tradition that ripples across the globe, reminding us of the importance of this essential resource. From educational forums to local cleanups, each action, big or small, contributes to the wave of change. This year"s theme, "Water for Peace," invites us to reflect on the universal solvent"s power to foster unity. So, are you ready to dive into a current that flows deeper than New Zealand"s Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway? With about 70% of the country"s bottled water coming from here, this spring mirrors the clarity and serenity we yearn for in the world.Desktop Version
