Scottish Blackface sheep, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Scottish Blackface sheep, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Being the "black sheep" isn"t always a bad thing—just ask the Scottish Blackface, seen here in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. With its striking dark features and a knack for thriving in places others wouldn"t, this British breed has turned the idiom on its head. Far from an outcast, it"s the backbone of Scotland"s rural life and a true champion of the hills and moors. Interestingly, the Blackface sheep didn"t originate in Scotland but south of the Anglo-Scottish border. The breed"s history is fascinating, and varieties such as the large-framed Perth and the medium-framed Lanark types are found across the United Kingdom. Though it"s the most common breed in the region, the Blackface sheep has spread across the world, including the United States. Its coarse fleece is perfect for making durable products like carpets and tweeds—definitely not your average sweater material.Desktop Version

Cuban tody, Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, Cuba
Cuban tody, Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, Cuba
The tiny, colourful Cuban tody can only be found in Cuba and its neighbouring islands. Its vibrant outfit gives it a unique look: sparkling green back, pale grey underparts, a red throat, pink flanks, blue ear patches and a black and red beak. Despite their colourful plumage, their size makes them hard to see; however, they are easy to hear. The soft sound of "pprreeee-pprreeee" or a short "tot-tot-tot-tot" will tell you there"s a tody somewhere nearby.Desktop Version

Happy Cousins Day!
Happy Cousins Day!
Remember the cousin who convinced you to climb the tallest tree or the one who helped you sneak an extra slice of cake at the family reunion? Today is a good time to appreciate those childhood partners in crime who made growing up way more exciting. Cousins often land somewhere between sibling and friend, getting into trouble with you, sharing inside jokes and showing up at every family gathering. The bond may stretch over time and distance, but it seldom fades. In nature, few creatures mirror that kind of togetherness better than the ashy woodswallow, pictured here. Native to South Asia, these birds are rarely seen alone. They gather in tight groups on bare branches or perch atop high places like powerlines. From there, they launch into graceful flights—flapping and gliding as they snatch insects midair.Desktop Version

April Fools Day
April Fools Day
Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, well, it must be April Fools" Day! Although no one is quite sure of the origins of this day, it has been celebrated for centuries in many different countries. Humour really does transcend borders! Over the years, there have been some truly memorable April Fools" Day jokes: in 1957, a BBC programme convinced its viewers that spaghetti was harvested from trees, while in 1985, Sports Illustrated readers were amazed to read about a pitcher who could throw a ball at 270 kilometres per hour.Desktop Version

Sea Otter Awareness Week
Sea Otter Awareness Week
It"s hard not to smile when you spot a sea otter. Their whiskery faces, busy paws, and thick fur give the impression of a stuffed animal that has come to life and taken to the ocean. These heaviest members of the weasel family aren"t just cute though, they also play a vital role in the kelp forest ecosystem, keeping the destructive sea urchin population in check. Sea Otter Awareness Week aims to help protect their populations, which once numbered as high as 300,000 but then dropped to fewer than 2,000 after widespread hunting. International protections were put into place in 1911, and numbers have rebounded to around 125,000, but they still remain endangered. While some habitats never recovered, others have emerged in entirely new locations, such as Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. In 1995, five sea otters were spotted in Glacier Bay, and today there are over 8,000 that hunt, play, and raise pups in the kelp-abundant waters.Desktop Version
