Mar. 25, 2025Tolkien Reading Day

Today is Tolkien Reading Day. A time to dust off well-worn copies of "The Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit," and journey once more into the lands of elves, dwarves and one particularly famous ring. But why this date? March 25 is the day the One Ring was destroyed, bringing down Sauron and ending his dark reign. This day was launched in 2003 to encourage people to explore J.R.R. Tolkien"s works. Schools, libraries and fans worldwide take part, reading passages aloud, discussing favourite moments and diving into the rich lore of Middle-earth. Some go all out with themed events, cosplay and even second breakfasts—because what better way to honour Tolkien than by feasting like a hobbit?Desktop Version

Sep. 8, 2023International Literacy Day

Jane Austen, author of "Pride and Prejudice", is one of the best-known writers to date, so it"s not a surprise that there are multiple festivals named after her that honor her legacy. One such Jane Austen Festival—held in Bath, England, home to the writer between 1801 and 1806—kicks off on September 8 this year, which also happens to be International Literacy Day. The 10-day-long celebration begins with the Regency Costume Promenade, filling the streets with people dressed in costumes appropriate to the British historical period of the early 19th century Regency era.Desktop Version

Mar. 16, 2026Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park, Alberta

This is the kind of landscape that makes maps feel suddenly more interesting. Evening settles quietly over Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta. As temperatures drop, the surface stills, mirroring snow-dusted peaks that formed during the last Ice Age. Stretching about 22 kilometres, the lake owes its existence to glacial movement that carved the valley and left behind meltwater basins. Today, cold, oxygen-rich freshwater sustains ecosystems that include species such as lake trout and mountain whitefish. Boat cruises and paddling routes offer one of the best ways to view Spirit Island, the small but widely photographed landmark featured in the image.Desktop Version

Nov. 7, 2024Vancouver Coastal Sea wolves in the Great Bear Rainforest

Amidst the mist-covered cedars and Sitka spruces of Canada"s Great Bear Rainforest, the Vancouver Coastal Sea wolf roams free. These canines, seen in British Columbia in today"s image, thrive in this ecosystem, which stretches from the north of Vancouver Island to the Alaskan border. This unique subspecies of the grey wolf is specific to the region and leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle, swimming between islands in search of food. Their diet primarily consists of fish, clams, mussels, crabs, otters and seals. This marine-based diet is a major difference with other wolf species, which feed almost exclusively on meat. These animals live in closely bonded groups, communicating with each other through growls, barks and whines, so they"re often heard before they are seen.Desktop Version

Traditionally an economic hub, Osaka has twice served briefly as the imperial capital, once in the 7th and once in the 8th century. It flourished culturally during the Edo period (1603–1867) and became a major industrial centre after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which restored imperial rule to Japan.Desktop Version

Apr. 19, 2025Zion National Park, Utah, United States

Standing in Zion National Park in Utah, United States, it is impossible not to feel small. Massive sandstone cliffs, sculpted over millions of years, rise towards the sky. It became a national park in 1919, but its history stretches much further back. The Ancestral Puebloans and later the Southern Paiute people lived here, relying on the Virgin River. Evidence of their presence remains in petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Today, the river continues to carve through the landscape, creating canyons that attract hikers and climbers.Desktop Version

Jul. 11, 2024World Population Day

In 1987, the world population reached the five-billion mark, a milestone so significant that it spawned an international observance: Five Billion Day. Back then, the United Nations recognised the need to address the burgeoning issues tied to our global footprint. Thus, World Population Day was established in 1989. Today, it"s not just a day—it"s a call to action. Overpopulation stretches our planet"s resources thin, urging us to confront urgent matters like family planning, an increase in waste and pollution or a lack of infrastructure. While metropolitan areas struggle with overcrowding, smaller places face the problem of decreasing population, leading to an imbalance. One such example is the Italian town of Gangi, Sicily, seen in today"s image. This village had about 16,000 residents in the 1950s, but today, it is home to a little more than 6,000. Keen on revitalisation, Gangi attracts attention by gifting abandoned houses to those committed to their restoration.Desktop Version
