Koala sleeping in a eucalyptus tree
Koala sleeping in a eucalyptus tree
Take a cue from today"s image; this sleepy koala may inspire you to catch some Z"s. Despite being commonly called "koala bears," the koala is not a bear. Koalas are marsupials, a type of mammal that carries and nurses their young offspring in a pouch. These adorable Australian marsupials can sleep up to 20 hours a day, which helps them conserve the little energy they get from their eucalyptus-based diet. Koalas move slowly when awake, spend most of their time tucked into nooks in trees, and have a lower body temperature than other animals of their size. Koalas are herbivores and their diet consists exclusively of eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are very fibrous and difficult to digest, but koalas have a specialised digestive system that allows them to break down the tough cellulose in the leaves.Desktop Version
Great wildebeest migration at Mara River, Kenya
Great wildebeest migration at Mara River, Kenya
They say the grass is always greener on the other side, and no one takes that more literally than the wildebeests of the Serengeti in Tanzania. Every July, roughly 2 million of these determined grazers, along with zebras and other herbivores, set off on a journey to the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of lush pastures and fresh water. The great migration, considered one of the seven wonders of the natural world, is a safari spectacle where survival is the prize. One of the most dramatic moments of the migration is the crossing of the Mara River. Thousands of wildebeests gather at the riverbank, aware that danger lurks beneath the surface—the crocodiles—not to mention the lions and leopards that patrol the banks.Desktop Version

Bring your binoculars and take the opportunity to witness these winged wonders huddled together, it"s truly a sight to behold!Desktop Version
Ring of fire solar eclipse
Ring of fire solar eclipse
A solar eclipse is nothing more than an alignment of the sun, Earth and moon that has the earth passing through the moon"s shadow. But why is an annular solar eclipse different? During this eclipse, the moon is the farthest from the Earth because of its elliptical orbit. Because of this, it appears smaller, letting the sun"s brilliance peek through and create a halo—the "ring of fire". If you are ever fortunate enough to see this cosmic show, please be cautious. Viewers should not look directly at the sun without specialised eye protection.Desktop Version

Thanks to their resilient and adaptable features, like their two layers of dense fur or eyes adapted to a wide range of light wavelengths, these mammals are accustomed to diverse environments. European hedgehog
A big hurray for spring for generously spreading delicious scents in the air, awakening our senses after the barren winter days. European hedgehogs have a developed sense of smell, which allows them to experience the best fragrances of the season. These nocturnal creatures usually rest in their nests made of leaves and grass during the day, venturing out to explore their surroundings at night. But when an adventurous individual takes advantage of the daylight, they might sniff through the sea of yellow dandelion flowers, just like this spiky creature in today"s image. As skilled hunters of insects and small animals, hedgehogs contribute to the diversity of this living ecosystem by consuming aphids, beetles and snails, helping to control populations of pests. So, if you come across one, respect its space and avoid scaring or disturbing it so that it can continue its own journey.Desktop Version
Pacific sea nettle jellyfish
Pacific sea nettle jellyfish
Jellyfish may be observed in all the world"s oceans in an array of shapes and sizes. There are about 2,000 different species of jellyfish, and they all lack hearts, bones and brains. Pacific sea nettle jellyfish, seen here, are known for their vibrant golden-brown bell, long tentacles and inhabit the coastal waters of California and Oregon. Moon jellyfish are pale and have short tentacles, and in an unexpected but somewhat appropriate twist, they ventured into space aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1991 to help scientists study their unique biology. No matter the species, jellyfish play a vital role in the ocean"s food chain, as they are the primary food source for many seawater animals, including sea turtles. Jellies are threatened by climate changes, marine pollution and overfishing, and damage to their populations has reverberating effects on the sea life that depends on them.Desktop Version
