Feb 14, 2025Magellanic penguins

Today"s image features a couple of Magellanic penguins, photographed holding flippers in the Falkland Islands. These penguins, found in coastal Patagonia, are known for their distinctive black and white bands and their loud, braying calls. They also mate with the same partner every year. They dig burrows near the coast to lay their eggs and raise their chicks. The male returns to burrows he used the year before and waits for his partner, who can recognise him by his voice alone. Their diet mainly consists of small fish, squid and krill. They can dive up to 50 metres depth to forage for food. In winter, they migrate north to warmer waters, sometimes reaching as far as southern Brazil. These penguins are highly social and often seen in large colonies, where they communicate with each other through their distinctive calls. Fun fact: Penguins can drink seawater because they have a special gland that filters out the salt!Desktop Version

Feb 27, 2025Polar bear cub, Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Polar bears are native to the Arctic and can be found in Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Svalbard. They"re also found in Canada—like the cub in today"s image, photographed in Churchill, Manitoba. Polar bears spend over half of their time hunting for seals on the sea ice, although they usually catch just one or two for every 10 that they try to catch. Their reliance on sea ice for hunting means that they are highly vulnerable to climate change. Their fur isn"t truly white; it"s translucent, reflecting visible light and allowing them to blend seamlessly into their snowy environment. Sea ice is rapidly disappearing as the planet heats up, and polar bears are at risk of malnutrition and starvation as their hunting grounds vanish. Shrinking ice sheets also mean that these bears have to swim farther to find food, which depletes their energy reserves. Protecting polar bears means protecting their home—let"s work together to slow the effects of climate change and safeguard their future.Desktop Version

Nov 7, 2023Kirkilai lakes, Biržai Regional Park, Lithuania

Nestled within the pristine expanse of Biržai Regional Park in Lithuania, the Kirkilai Observation Tower stands as an example of allure and creativity in modern architecture. Rising 32 metres above the lush landscapes, it offers an unrivaled vantage point to behold the beauty of the Kirkilai karst lakes. The natural wonder is formed by the dissolution of water-soluble rocks such as gypsum and limestone. Over time, the gradual erosion and collapse of caves in these rocks created depressions filled with crystal-clear water, resulting in these mesmerising and unique bodies of water. The interconnected lakes mirror the surrounding greenery, creating a scenic haven for nature enthusiasts.Desktop Version

Feb 27, 2024Polar bear cubs

Bear with us as we head to Alaska, United States, to celebrate the world"s largest bear species, the polar bear! The polar bears in today"s image are in Kaktovik, a small Inupiat whaling community in the state. The bears visit the village during autumn, attracted by unused remnants left on the streets by whale hunters. Polar bears have gone by many names over the years, including white bear, ice bear and Greenland bear. Their scientific name, Ursus maritimus, is Latin for sea bear. These apex predators live and hunt on Arctic Sea ice. Their prey largely consists of seals, but they have been known to eat beluga whales, reindeer and other Arctic animals. The cubs are protected by their mothers in their dens, as this is the most vulnerable time in a polar bear"s life. Let’s strive to conserve this precious species, more so in such times of rising global warming.Desktop Version

Sep 14, 2023Przewalskis horses, Hustai National Park, Mongolia

The Hustai National Park in Mongolia is home to a very special and rare breed of horse, Przewalski"s horse. This equine species, which is regarded as the only truly pure wild horse today, is easily recognised by its pale yellowish-brown coat, a short, stiff mane and short legs. The Przewalski"s horse, also called "takhi" in Mongolia, was once extinct in the wild but has been successfully reintroduced through conservation efforts in the 1990s. An interesting fact about these horses is that they have 66 chromosomes, compared to 64 in domestic horses. Remarkably, Przewalski"s horses can mate with domestic horses to produce hybrids. These hybrids have 65 chromosomes and can breed and have their own offspring.Desktop Version

Jan 3, 2026Staubbach Falls at Lauterbrunnen, Canton of Bern, Switzerland

The town of Lauterbrunnen, with its 72 waterfalls, is often considered one of the most picturesque valleys in the world. This is the landscape a young traveller, J.R.R. Tolkien, crossed during a hiking trip in 1911, long before he became the storyteller behind "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit." Its soaring cliffs, silver waterfalls and crisp mountain air left a lasting impression and are believed to have inspired his vision of Rivendell, the elven refuge hidden deep in Middle-earth.Desktop Version

They are rich in nutrients like vitamin A and vitamin C, which are beneficial for our eyes and skin. It"s interesting to note that pumpkins are considered fruits because they contain plant seeds (berries in this case). In 2003, Starbucks introduced a seasonal hit, the pumpkin spice latte, a drink made with pumpkin spice, steamed milk, espresso and other spices. Pumpkins and squashes can be used to create dishes such as squash soups, pumpkin pie and squash risottos. Their versatility in the kitchen allows for exploration while evoking a comforting sense of nostalgia.Desktop Version

Something that supports this theory is the fact that Angel Falls is often misidentified as the Dragon Falls. So, whether you"re after Angels or Dragons, Venezuela has a waterfall for you!Desktop Version

Nov 27, 2023Río Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil

The Río Negro, originating in Colombia, is one of dozens of tributaries that flow into the massive Amazon River. Its name, which means black river, comes from its dark appearance when viewed from a distance. As a result, the water can reflect the colourful hues of the sky overhead, such as the vibrant blue and partial rainbow seen here. The colour of the river comes from the high concentration of humic acid, thanks to decomposing organic matter that seeps from nearby swamps. As one of the largest northern-bank tributaries of the Amazon River, the Río Negro plays a crucial role in the complex Amazon basin ecosystem. The river is home to many plants and animals, including the critically endangered Brazilian barefaced tamarin, the giant river otter and nearly 700 species of fish.Desktop Version
