Sept 20, 2026Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France

No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital"s history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World"s Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair"s entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.Desktop Version

Sept 21, 2026Sea otter grooming fur, Monterey Bay, California, United States

Few animals are as closely tied to the health of coastal ecosystems as the sea otter. In today"s image, one grooms its fur in Monterey Bay, California, USA. This behaviour is far more than a daily ritual. Unlike seals and whales, sea otters have little insulating blubber, so they rely on the densest fur of any animal. Careful cleaning traps air within their coat, creating a waterproof layer that helps them stay warm in the cold Pacific.Desktop Version

Sept 17, 2026Santenay wine region, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

Each year, late summer and early autumn bring one of France"s most anticipated traditions: the "vendanges," the grape-picking season. The timing varies from one wine region to another and depends on weather conditions, sun exposure and the ripeness of the fruit. For many vineyards, harvest is still a hands-on effort, with teams carefully selecting bunches destined for some of the country"s most celebrated wines.Desktop Version

Sept 14, 2026Field of kochia plants, China

In today"s image, kochia plants spread across the landscape in China in shades of green and deep red. Native to parts of Eurasia, kochia was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental plant and a source of material for broom making. Its ability to withstand drought, heat, saline soils and low rainfall helped it spread across the Great Plains and much of the American West.Desktop Version

Sept 18, 2026Winnats Pass, Peak District National Park, England

A long, winding road cuts through rocks more than 300 million years old in England"s Peak District. Oct 1, 2026Yosemite National Park, California, United States

In 1890, Yosemite became America"s third national park. More than a century later, it still feels like a place that operates on geological time rather than human schedules. From Olmsted Point, the overlook in today"s image, that timescale is impossible to miss. The smooth granite underfoot was sculpted by glaciers, while scattered boulders known as glacial erratics were carried here by ice and abandoned when it melted.Desktop Version

Its name comes from two buttes that rise side by side and resemble a bear"s ears.Desktop Version

Sept 6, 2026Lake Fyans, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia

At first glance, today"s image looks more like a drowned woodland than a lake. Oct 24, 2026Green-headed tanager

In much of Brazil, July is synonymous with cold weather, mist and muted tones. The green-headed tanager goes in the opposite direction. Green, blue, turquoise, yellow, black, orange and touches of violet come together on a body just over 13 centimetres long, appearing among the branches like a living argument for extravagance. It is no surprise that it frequently features on lists of the most beautiful birds in the world.Desktop Version

Sept 1, 2026Horsehair parachute fungus, Belarus

Fungi often go unnoticed beneath forest floors, lawns and fallen leaves, yet their underground threads help recycle nutrients and support healthy ecosystems. The mushrooms we see are only the fruiting bodies of much larger organisms. They appear briefly, release spores, then disappear from sight. Unlike plants, fungi belong to a kingdom of their own. Some species even glow, while others form partnerships with trees.Desktop Version

Aug 22, 2026Common blue butterfly

That quick glimpse of blue fluttering through a field has a story that begins much earlier, with a tiny caterpillar and a surprising survival trick. The common blue is found across Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, feeding on flower nectar as an adult. It starts life as a small egg, often placed by a female on a host plant such as bird"s-foot trefoil. The real surprise comes during its caterpillar stage, when ants play an unexpected role in its survival. After hatching, the caterpillar feeds on leaves before entering the next stage of its transformation. Along the way, it produces a sugary substance called honeydew that ants feed on. As a way of saying thanks, the ants may protect the caterpillar from predators.Desktop Version

Aug 25, 2026Redwood National and State Parks, California, United States

The walk begins with a patch of sunlight on the trail, then the redwoods seem to close around the path. Today"s image from Redwood National and State Parks in California, USA, shows the scene many visitors remember most: towering trunks, ferns underfoot and moss clinging to fallen wood. The parks take their name from the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, whose thick, reddish bark helps protect it from fire. After decades of extensive logging, Redwood National Park was created in 1968 and later expanded in 1978 to strengthen protection for old-growth forests.Desktop Version

Aug 21, 2026Winding road of Julier Pass, Switzerland

Some mountain roads become destinations in their own right, and Julier Pass is one of them. This Swiss mountain pass rises to 2,284 metres and has linked Alpine valleys along a route used for nearly 2,000 years. Its story began long before modern traffic. No guardrails, no pavement—just a route used by Roman travellers, merchants and messengers. Archaeological finds near the summit, including countless coins and two Roman soapstone columns, suggest there was once a sanctuary or stopping place for those tackling the climb.Desktop Version
