Dec 4, 2024Male white rhinoceroses

Today"s image features white rhinoceros in Lake Nakuru, Kenya. Their journey illustrates the importance of conservation efforts. They have two subspecies: the near-threatened southern white rhinoceros and the critically endangered northern white rhinoceros. In the late 19th century, the southern white rhino, found in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya, was on the brink of extinction due to relentless poaching for their horns. But thanks to more than a century of dedicated management, their numbers have bounced back significantly. Unfortunately, the northern white rhino is in a precarious situation, with only two left—a mother and daughter. They"re now under protection at Kenya"s Ol Pejeta Conservancy.Desktop Version

Apr 14, 2025Atlantic spotted dolphins near Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal

Atlantic spotted dolphins—the stars of today"s image—are known for the spots on their body, which multiply and become denser with age. When younger, they lack spots, often resembling slender bottlenose dolphins. You"ll find them in the warm temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, hunting fish in coordinated groups. They"re fast swimmers, known for their playful bow-riding and acrobatic, shallow leaps. These dolphins are amazing team players when it comes to hunting, as they often hunt in groups, working together to surround their prey, which includes small fish, benthic invertebrates and even squid. Jun 2, 2025Skipper butterfly on an Echinacea flower

Pictured here is a skipper butterfly, known for its quick, darting flight, resting on a vibrant Echinacea, or coneflower, at Rockefeller State Park in New York, United States. These flowers bloom during summer, providing long-lasting colour and attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. They are also appreciated for their low-maintenance nature and ability to naturalize. Unfortunately, wild Echinacea populations are under growing threat from excessive harvesting. In addition, habitat loss and environmental changes caused by human activity also threaten the long-term survival of some species.Desktop Version
