1 Mar 2024Saint Davids Day

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapu, or, if you don"t speak Welsh, Happy Saint David"s Day! It"s 1st March, and across Wales, people are celebrating the country’s patron saint. Born in the 6th century, Saint David was a Welsh bishop who preached as far afield as Brittany in France. The day is celebrated by displaying leeks and daffodils, traditional symbols of Wales; parades are held across the country, and people eat Welsh dishes like cawl and bara brith. But the true essence of this day is best felt at the St David"s Cathedral in the United Kingdom"s smallest city, St Davids, with a population that barely exceeds 1,900 residents. The city is also the resting place of Saint David and is a symbol of serene resilience, just like his famous words: "Do the little things." So, let"s celebrate the small but mightily meaningful things today.Desktop Version

Perched at 2,400 to 2,700 metres, this overlook offers a panoramic view of rocky spires in red, orange and white. The most iconic of them is Thor"s Hammer, a hoodoo that overlooks a part of the park known as the "Silent City." 27 Sep 2024Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice, Italy

Steeped in history, the Santa Maria della Salute church in Venice is a prime example of Baroque architecture. Constructed between 1631 and 1687, the church was a votive offering for the city"s deliverance from a devastating plague in 1630. Built at the entrance to the Grand Canal, its dome dominates the Venice skyline, as seen in today"s image. Italian architect Baldassare Longhena envisioned this structure at the age of 26, and it became his lifelong project, which was completed after his death. The exterior of the church, with its volutes—spiral, scroll-like ornaments and statues contrasts with the spacious octagonal interior adorned with works by Renaissance artists like Titian and Tintoretto. Each November, Venice commemorates the church"s significance during the Festa della Madonna della Salute, a cultural celebration that includes festive processions and offering of candles in gratitude for deliverance from the plague.Desktop Version
