The winter solstice is here. Today marks the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere, while last night was the longest night of the year. This has been an important event for millennia, with evidence of celebrations going back as far as 10,000 BCE. Some of the world"s most famous Stone Age monuments, including Stonehenge, are aligned with the point that the sun rises or sets on the winter solstice. Traditionally, it was a time for feasting and lighting of fires to symbolise the darkest day of the year. Today, Talampaya National Park invites us to venture into the Argentina"s ancient heart. Situated in La Rioja province, this 2,149- square- kilometre park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, towering red rock formations, reaching skyward at 142 metres, are etched with the secrets of prehistoric life. The park is home to some of the oldest dinosaur remains ever found. Talampaya is also a canvas for ancient art. The park"s cliffs and caves feature petroglyphs created by the Ciénaga, Diaguita and other Indigenous cultures that inhabited the area between the 3rd and 9th centuries CE. Moreover, nature"s beauty is shown in the local flora, like xeric shrubs and cactus, and fauna. Why fly when you can slide? These flightless birds primarily inhabit Antarctica, with species varying from emperor penguins to today"s image star, Adélie penguins. In 1840, the French adventurer Jules Dumont d"Urville discovered the Adélie penguins and honoured his wife, Adèle Dorothée, by naming them after her. Despite their small size, Adélie penguins are sleek swimmers and can dive as deep as 175 metres in search of shrimp-like krill or fish. They are social animals which gather in small colonies for foraging, hunting and protection. Throughout history, red deer have captured humanity"s awe and respect. These creatures can be found across Europe, Asia, parts of North Africa and a few other regions. In Canada, these animals are primarily found in Alberta, with the prairies and parklands around the city of Red Deer offering an ideal habitat for them. The stags have antlers that grow larger each year until maturity and are usually over 70 centimetres long, weighing around 1 kilogram. These antlers have long been a symbol of power and are the only mammal organ capable of complete regeneration. Females, or hinds, are slightly smaller and antler-free, as seen in today"s image.
