Throughout history, red deer have captured humanity"s awe and respect. These creatures can be found across Europe, Asia, parts of North Africa and a few other regions. In Canada, these animals are primarily found in Alberta, with the prairies and parklands around the city of Red Deer offering an ideal habitat for them. The stags have antlers that grow larger each year until maturity and are usually over 70 centimetres long, weighing around 1 kilogram. These antlers have long been a symbol of power and are the only mammal organ capable of complete regeneration. Females, or hinds, are slightly smaller and antler-free, as seen in today"s image. Breeding season, known as the rut, is a time of dramatic display as males compete fiercely for mates through roaring and antler clashes. The cultural significance of red deer represents the natural cycle of life. This has been an important event for millennia, with evidence of celebrations going back as far as 10,000 BCE. Some of the world"s most famous Stone Age monuments, including Stonehenge, are aligned with the point that the sun rises or sets on the winter solstice. Traditionally, it was a time for feasting and lighting of fires to symbolise the darkest day of the year. Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, India. The group of monuments - ancient temples, majestic palaces and intricate ruins - are left from the once-capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire, which ruled this area from the 14th to the 16th centuries CE. During the reign of King Krishnadevaraya, from 1509 to 1529, the city underwent significant expansion and was filled with art and architecture, attracting visitors and traders from all over the world. Carved by nature over centuries, the Three Natural Bridges in Wulong Karst, China, is a geological wonder. These limestone bridges, towering over a deep gorge, are named after three dragons: Tianlong (Sky Dragon), Qinglong (Azure Dragon) and Heilong (Black Dragon). Tianlong, standing at 235 metres, has a bridge-pier with maze-like caves in it. The Qinglong Bridge, which is 281 metres high, offers breathtaking views when the sun is out. Heilong Bridge is the widest of the three bridges at 192 metres and reaches a height of 223 metres. Visitors can explore the Wulong Karst National Geology Park and visit places like the Furong Cave, a 2,845-metre cave with huge limestone stalactites, which are mineral formations that hang from the ceiling. The most notable spot on Senja is pictured today, Mount Segla, a magnificent peak that is traveled frequently during summers with a trail starting in Fjordgård, a fishing village in the north of Senja. It takes a tough hike up the steep mountain to get to the over 610 metre-tall crest. Why fly when you can slide? These flightless birds primarily inhabit Antarctica, with species varying from emperor penguins to today"s image star, Adélie penguins. In 1840, the French adventurer Jules Dumont d"Urville discovered the Adélie penguins and honoured his wife, Adèle Dorothée, by naming them after her. Despite their small size, Adélie penguins are sleek swimmers and can dive as deep as 175 metres in search of shrimp-like krill or fish. They are social animals which gather in small colonies for foraging, hunting and protection.
