Oct. 22, 2023Astoria-Megler Bridge, Oregon

Imagine travelling for nearly two years across plains, mountains, and forests and finally arriving at this setting, the mighty waters of the Columbia River emptying into the Pacific Ocean, with the sea stretching out to the horizon. That is what greeted Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805 at on their legendary North American expedition that originated near St. Louis. Fort Astoria, founded nearby in 1811 by the American Fur Company, was the first US-owed settlement on the West Coast. The Astoria-Megler Bridge was added to this picture 155 years later, the final piece connecting Los Angeles to Olympia, Washington, via US Route 101. Water from seven states and two Canadian provinces flows through the Columbia, passing under the four-mile structure, the longest continuous truss bridge in North America.Desktop Version

Jan. 31, 2024International Zebra Day

It"s time for some black-and-white thinking. January 31 is International Zebra Day, a day to honour these stripey creatures. While all zebras have the iconic black-and-white stripes, there are actually three different species of zebras: plains, mountain and Grévy"s zebras. Today"s snapshot shows Burchell"s zebras, a subspecies of the plains zebra, in Rietvlei Nature Reserve, South Africa. Found across eastern and southern Africa, zebras thrive in savannas, shrublands, woodlands and even mountain regions. They spend most of their time eating—grasses, leaves and shrubs are their favourites—and have been known to travel hundreds of kilometres in search of food and water. Sadly, all three varieties of zebra are under threat from hunting and habitat destruction, so events like International Zebra Day that draw attention to their plight are more necessary than ever.Desktop Version

Oct. 31, 2023Halloween

Halloween is here! A night when glowing jack-o"-lanterns decorate doorsteps across the country. The custom has its roots in 19th-century Ireland, where turnips and potatoes were sculpted into scary faces. When Irish immigrants arrived in the US, they found pumpkins much easier to carve and a new tradition was born. The digital age has made things easier still, for those whose carving skills are not up to scratch. This image was created with Bing Image Creator (now even better with DALL·E 3) – create your own jack-o"-lantern with the power of AI.Desktop Version
