J.R.R. Tolkien Day
J.R.R. Tolkien Day
Our picture of the day takes us to the Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen, where the Staubbach Falls shimmers in the distance beyond a quiet alpine valley. This is the landscape a young traveller, J.R.R. Tolkien, crossed during a hiking trip in 1911, long before he became the storyteller behind "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit." Its soaring cliffs, silver waterfalls and crisp mountain air left a lasting impression and are believed to have inspired his vision of Rivendell, the elven refuge hidden deep in Middle-earth.Desktop Version
Ring-tailed lemur
Ring-tailed lemur
It looks like this small creature is playing a game, right? But when a baby ring-tailed lemur wraps its tail around or gives it a tug, it"s actually working on crucial skills. The infants spend their early weeks hanging tight to their mom, first clinging to her belly and later to her back. As they grow, they separate from their mom, and tail-chasing becomes part of how they learn balance, coordination and group play. These primates use their long tails for communication as well. Raised like flags during group movement, the tails help them stick together in open terrain. Loud, rhythmic calls, scent markings and "stink fights" between males add to the social drama.Desktop Version
Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa
Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa
It starts quietly—rows of tulips opening along the Rideau Canal as spring settles in. Then the story catches up. The Canadian Tulip Festival begins today, marking its 74th year, but its roots go back to wartime Europe. In 1945, after Canada helped liberate the Netherlands and hosted Princess Juliana during her exile, a gift of tulip bulbs arrived in Ottawa. That tradition didn"t end; it returned each year, growing into today"s festival.Desktop Version
Keel-billed toucan, Costa Rica
Keel-billed toucan, Costa Rica
Spot a flash of yellow on its chest and a bill that looks painted by an artist—that"s the keel-billed toucan. A member of the Ramphastidae family, which includes toucan barbets, it is one of more than 40 toucan species. Found from southern Mexico to northern Colombia, it spends much of its day plucking fruit with a rainbow-coloured bill about one-third of its total length. It also eats insects, eggs and small reptiles when available. The bill not only helps it eat but also keeps the toucan cool by radiating excess heat—thanks to the blood vessels running through it. This social bird often moves in small groups, chattering and gliding between treetops. With each wing measuring around 17-20 centimetres, the keel-billed toucan moults, or sheds its feathers, just once a year.Desktop Version
Perseid meteor shower over Nevada
Perseid meteor shower over Nevada
Get ready for one of the most dazzling celestial displays of the year—the Perseid meteor shower. Active from mid-July through late August, it reaches its spectacular peak on the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13 this year. The Perseids light up the skies when Earth passes through a trail of icy and rocky debris left behind by Comet Swift–Tuttle, which last passed close to our planet in 1992. These meteors are called the Perseids because they appear to streak from the direction of the constellation Perseus.Desktop Version

Tide pools in La Jolla, California, United States
Tide pools in La Jolla, California, United States
Not every science lesson requires a classroom. In La Jolla in California, United States, tide pools teach you about ocean life—right at your feet. Along the rocky shoreline of this San Diego coastal neighbourhood, tide pools form during low tide as seawater gets trapped in natural depressions. These shallow pools form naturally along La Jolla"s rocky shorelines, especially near Windansea Beach, Shell Beach, South Casa Beach and Hospital Point. The water that remains trapped in sandstone and reef depressions creates habitats for everything from sea hares to brittle stars.Desktop Version

Northern gannets, Shetland Islands, Scotland
Graceful, powerful and impossible to miss—the northern gannet is the largest seabird on the waters of the North Atlantic. International Day of the Snow Leopard

Banff, Alberta
Banff, Alberta
Banff in Alberta didn"t grow quietly. It arrived with railways, hot springs and a vision: to protect places of rare beauty. By 1885, the surrounding land has been set aside as a protected reserve. What did that lead to? The beginnings of Banff National Park, Canada"s first, and a blueprint the country would return to again and again.Desktop Version
Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising
Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York"s Greenwich Village, met unexpected resistance. Fed up with years of harassment, LGBTQIA+ patrons fought back. What followed was six days of unrest—and the start of a movement. Led in part by American trans activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the uprising challenged not only police brutality but society"s silence. Stonewall wasn"t the beginning of queer existence, but it was the moment people said "no more" loud enough to be heard worldwide.Desktop Version
A female Eurasian red squirrel, Switzerland
A female Eurasian red squirrel, Switzerland
Quick, clever and always on the move—meet the Eurasian red squirrel, a leafy treetop resident found across much of Europe and Asia. While it prefers the shelter of forests, this agile creature easily adapts to gardens and parks. It builds its nest, called a drey, high in the fork of a tree using twigs to form a domed structure about 25 to 30 centimetres wide. The female featured here is gathering moss—one of several soft materials, along with bark, leaves and grass, that line the nest and turn it into a snug, well-insulated retreat. These rodents may also take over tree hollows or abandoned woodpecker holes when available.Desktop Version

Established by Congress in 1962, the park was set aside to protect this piece of coastline for public enjoyment and environmental conservation. It covers more than 250 square kilometres and features an impressive array of landscapes, from coastal prairie and blustery headlands to sandy shores and Douglas fir woodlands.Desktop Version
National Llama Day
National Llama Day
If llamas are the laid-back stars of the Andes, their cousins, the guanacos, are the free spirits of Patagonia. And what better day to give them the spotlight than National Llama Day? Guanacos are part of the same camelid family as llamas, alpacas and vicuñas. But unlike their domesticated relatives, they keep things wild. Found mainly in Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia, they"re built for life at high altitude. Their thick coats help them handle chilly winds, while their padded feet give them the grip to trek across rocky terrain that would make even mountain goats nervous.Desktop Version
Black-and-white ruffed lemur in Madagascar
Black-and-white ruffed lemur in Madagascar
One moment the canopy is still, and the next, a burst of black and white shoots through it like a living exclamation mark. That"s the black-and-white ruffed lemur, a primate that doesn"t shy away from announcing itself with raucous calls. Its coat comes in bold patches, and the thick ruff frames its face. Roughly 92% of the lemur"s diet is fruit, with leaves, nectar, seeds and the occasional fungus making up the rest. When trees are heavy with figs and other seasonal offerings, this creature moves quickly through the dense forest. As it laps up nectar, pollen sticks to its snout, turning it into one of the habitat"s most effective pollinators.Desktop Version
World Nature Conservation Day
World Nature Conservation Day
Every July 28, World Nature Conservation Day reminds us that protecting nature isn"t optional—it"s essential. Mongolia"s vast grasslands, featured today, are a powerful example. They support around 200,000 nomadic herder families and provide habitat for rare species like the Mongolian gazelle and snow leopard.Desktop Version
Eurasian lynx
Eurasian lynx
Think of a cat that can vanish into the forest without a sound—that"s the Eurasian lynx. With its tufted ears and a piercing gaze, this feline is the largest of the four lynx species. Stretching up to more than 100 centimetres in length and standing around 75 centimetres at the shoulder, the Eurasian lynx is built for power and precision. Its padded paws aren"t just for sneaking; they act like snowshoes, spreading its weight so it can chase down prey in deep winter drifts. Mostly a nocturnal hunter, it spends its days tucked away in thickets or rocky dens, venturing out under the cover of darkness to stalk deer, hares and squirrels.Desktop Version
White Sands National Park, New Mexico, United States
White Sands National Park, New Mexico, United States
If "Frozen" traded ice for sand, the result would look a lot like White Sands National Park in New Mexico—cool, white dunes that deceive the eye at first glance. It became a national monument on this day in 1933, established to protect a rare geological phenomenon: the world"s largest gypsum dunefield. These dunes were formed from gypsum crystals that broke down over thousands of years, creating bright waves that stay cool even in summer.Desktop Version

Temple of Philae, Aswan, Egypt
The Temple of Philae, often called the Temple of Isis, is one of Egypt"s most enchanting ancient sites. Originally built on Philae Island, it was moved to nearby Agilkia Island to save it from flooding. Village of Oia in Santorini, Greece
Village of Oia in Santorini, Greece
Ever wondered what it"s like to live on a movie set? Oia is about as close as it gets, part of Greece"s Santorini archipelago. This village has appeared in films like "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and "Tomb Raider," thanks to its Cycladic houses—cube-shaped homes with flat roofs—and cliffside views that feel almost unreal. Its unique architecture has roots in the late 19th century. Sailors and merchants carved houses right into the volcanic cliffs—cool in summer and warm in winter. The white-and-blue theme is also more than just for show: houses were painted with lime wash so rainwater would run off and be collected. Today, visitors wander its cobbled lanes, explore the Naval Maritime Museum or climb to the ruins of Agios Nikolaos Castle for unforgettable sunsets.Desktop Version

This year, the theme explores literacy in a digital age, where technology continues to reshape how people learn, communicate and participate in society. As a result, digital engagement has become both a challenge and an opportunity.Desktop Version
