Feb. 23, 2026Great white egret, Upper Bavaria, Germany

The great egret is a striking large heron, easily recognisable by its pure white plumage, long neck and sharp yellow bill. Apr. 30, 2025International Jazz Day

It"s time to jazz up—literally. From the smoky clubs of Montreal to the bustling streets of Tokyo, jazz has crossed borders, blended cultures and turned improvisation into an art form. Every April 30, International Jazz Day—established by UNESCO in 2011—celebrates this genre"s role in promoting peace, dialogue and unity. This music form emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in New Orleans, United States, a city alive with musical traditions from Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. Rooted in blues and ragtime, jazz quickly evolved, with pioneers like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald giving it a voice. Canada embraced jazz early on, with Montreal becoming a jazz hotspot by the 1920s. The Montreal International Jazz Festival, founded in 1980, holds a Guinness World Record as the world"s largest jazz festival, drawing global artists and fans.Desktop Version

Established in 828 CE by Boniface II of Tuscany, the commune gradually became a meeting point for traders, soldiers and sailors—each group contributing to the evolution of the town"s structure. Bonifacio is divided into two sections, with the "vieille ville" (old town)—also known as "la Haute Ville" (the Upper City)—standing on a high cliff within the original citadel walls. Below, the marine area lines the narrow inlet with harbours, waterfront homes and a growing valley community.Desktop Version

The surrounding neighbourhoods, originally planned by Saxon monarchs in the 18th and 19th centuries, are named after Saxon sovereigns like Friedrichstadt and Albertstadt.Desktop Version

The name originates from a local legend about a Gallic giant, Treviso, who chose to leap off the cliffs of Rocher des Gattes rather than be captured by Roman soldiers. This vantage point, popular among hikers and road-trippers, provides a view that shifts dramatically with the seasons. During autumn, the landscape dons warm colours, as seen in today"s image, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers.Desktop Version
