International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day
Jane Austen, author of "Pride and Prejudice", is one of the best-known writers to date, so it"s not a surprise that there are multiple festivals named after her that honor her legacy. One such Jane Austen Festival—held in Bath, England, home to the writer between 1801 and 1806—kicks off on September 8 this year, which also happens to be International Literacy Day. The 10-day-long celebration begins with the Regency Costume Promenade, filling the streets with people dressed in costumes appropriate to the British historical period of the early 19th century Regency era.Desktop Version

Tolkien Reading Day
Tolkien Reading Day
Today is Tolkien Reading Day. A time to dust off well-worn copies of "The Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit," and journey once more into the lands of elves, dwarves and one particularly famous ring. But why this date? March 25 is the day the One Ring was destroyed, bringing down Sauron and ending his dark reign. This day was launched in 2003 to encourage people to explore J.R.R. Tolkien"s works. Schools, libraries and fans worldwide take part, reading passages aloud, discussing favourite moments and diving into the rich lore of Middle-earth. Some go all out with themed events, cosplay and even second breakfasts—because what better way to honour Tolkien than by feasting like a hobbit?Desktop Version

Allens Hummingbird
Allens Hummingbird
With their vibrant plumage, delicate features and ability to hover mid-air, hummingbirds are one of the wonders of the natural world. The rapid flapping of their wings—an average of 53 times a second—creates their trademark humming sound. That gives them quite an appetite: these little birdies can feed every 10–15 minutes! Today"s specimen is an Allen"s hummingbird, which can be found along the western coast of North America, most commonly in California. They arrive in these areas as early as January and gradually become easy to spot.Desktop Version

Zoroaster Temple, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, United States
Carved by the Colorado River, nearly 2 billion years of Earth"s history are exposed in the layers of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States. While geologists continue to debate parts of the formation story of the canyon, recent studies suggest the river carved its path through the region about 5 to 6 million years ago. Since then, the river has been deepening and widening the canyon while sculpting its dramatic geographical features.Desktop Version
Trullo buildings in Alberobello, Apulia, Italy
Trullo buildings in Alberobello, Apulia, Italy
If fairy tales had architects, they might"ve come up with something like Alberobello in Italy. But instead of magic wands, it was limestone, mortar-free masonry and—according to some theories—a bit of tax evasion that built this town"s signature homes: the trulli. These are whitewashed stone houses topped with dry-stacked limestone roofs shaped like upside-down ice cream cones. It"s an ancient building technique, and in this case, a clever one. Back in the 14th century, locals were reportedly trying to avoid property taxes by constructing homes that could be quickly dismantled when the king"s tax collector came around.Desktop Version
South Stack Lighthouse, Holyhead, Wales, UK
South Stack Lighthouse, Holyhead, Wales, UK
Built on the rugged cliffs of Holy Island, Wales, the South Stack Lighthouse stands watch over the deep waters of the Irish Sea. The 28-metres-tall white tower has guided sailors since its completion in 1809; it provides safe passage for ships on the Dublin-Holyhead-Liverpool route. When it was built, sperm whale oil was used to light the lamps; however, over the years, the mechanism has been upgraded to more advanced technology like LED bulbs and Fresnel lenses. Automated in 1984, the lighthouse continues to serve as a vital navigational aid, with its powerful beam shining up to 44 kilometres. As the sun sets and the sky fills with colours, the silhouette of the South Stack Lighthouse in the dusk makes for a stunning sight. Visitors brave the 400-step descent down the steep cliff face to explore the lighthouse, including its engine room and exhibition area.Desktop Version

Earth Day
Earth Day
Today is Earth Day—a day dedicated to celebrating the planet we call home and raising awareness of environmental problems. The seeds of this day were planted back in 1969 when Gaylord Nelson, the then-Wisconsin senator, witnessed events like the Cuyahoga River catching fire and the Santa Barbara oil spill and decided that the world needed an environmental initiative. A year later, the first Earth Day event was held. Now, it has grown into an annual event with more than a billion people in over 193 countries taking part.Desktop Version

El Capitan in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas, USA
Today, let us take you to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in western Texas. The park, officially established in 1972, covers around 350 square kilometres today. Here, the Guadalupe Mountains rise over the salt dunes of the Chihuahuan Desert. At 2,667 metres, the highest point of the mountain range—and of Texas—is the Guadalupe Peak. Another outstanding landmark, often used as a waymark for travellers, is the 2,464-metre-high El Capitan—not to be confused with the more famous, but shorter, El Capitan in California—limestone cliff, seen in the image. If not in the near future; there are plenty of days in the year to visit America"s abundant natural splendour.Desktop Version

Little Pigeon River, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, United States
Blink and you miss it—until you hear it. The steady ripple, the splash of trout, the distant laughter of hikers. That"s the Little Pigeon River, threading its way through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, United States. Long before tourists tubed it and fly fishers praised it, this river was how people stayed afloat. The Cherokee tribe fished in it. Settlers built grist mills along it. Towns like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge grew up with it. Even the river"s name is a nod to the past—the passenger pigeon, once common in the area, vanished by the early 1900s.Desktop Version
World Bicycle Day
World Bicycle Day
Two wheels, no fuel and a whole lot of purpose—cycling is affordable, eco-friendly and easy on the planet. Something as simple as cycling can significantly boost your health, and swapping the car for a bicycle is an easy way to stay active. Moreover, cycling helps reduce pollution, eases traffic congestion and offers an affordable transport option for those without access to cars. Because of all these benefits, the United Nations dedicated June 3 as World Bicycle Day—a day to celebrate everything this amazing two-wheeler stands for. If there"s one place that brings the cycling spirit to life, it"s the Netherlands. Today"s image captures bicycles lined up on a bridge in Utrecht. More than half the journeys around the city happen on bikes, surpassing cars and other transport options.Desktop Version
