Black-tailed prairie dogs
Black-tailed prairie dogs
In 1978, a stark stretch of South Dakota prairie gained recognition as one of America"s natural treasures. Badlands National Park, carved by wind and water, was redesignated from national monument to national park status, securing stronger protection within the United States" National Park System. Its cliffs and spires rise above fossil beds that reveal ancient rhinoceroses, camels and subtropical seas. Yet the park is not only a window into the past; it also safeguards one of the largest remaining tracts of mixed-grass prairie in the country.Desktop Version

European fallow deer, England
European fallow deer, England
Flat antlers? Check. Spotted coat? Check. Side-eye from the bushes? Also check. Say hello to the European fallow deer. These medium-sized deer have been strutting through British woodlands and parklands for centuries. Though they look right at home, they weren"t born here. The Romans likely brought them over and the Normans later made them common in hunting parks. Now, they"re regulars in landscapes from Sussex to Scotland.Desktop Version

What stands out about Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa isn"t just the wildlife—it"s the long-term commitment behind it. Since 1926, its 150 square kilometres have supported research and monitored wildlife behaviour in their natural habitat. Located within the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, it is home to Africa"s Big Five. Londolozi is part of a larger open system that connects with Kruger National Park, allowing animals such as elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, zebras and many antelope species to move freely without fences holding them back.Desktop Version
Eurasian red squirrel
Eurasian red squirrel
Quick, clever and always on the move—meet the Eurasian red squirrel, a leafy treetop resident found across much of Europe and Asia. While it prefers the shelter of forests, this agile creature easily adapts to gardens and parks. It builds its nest, called a drey, high in the fork of a tree using twigs to form a domed structure about 25 to 30 centimetres wide. The female featured here is gathering moss—one of several soft materials, along with bark, leaves and grass, that line the nest and turn it into a snug, well-insulated retreat. These rodents may also take over tree hollows or abandoned woodpecker holes when available.Desktop Version
Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
An egg-laying mammal. No teeth. Reptilian gait. Built-in body armour. If the short-beaked echidna sounds like a checklist of contradictions, that"s because it is—and it owns it. Native to Australia, Tasmania and parts of New Guinea, it"s one of the few surviving monotremes, or mammals that lay eggs. Despite the headlines, it still qualifies as a mammal: it has fur, produces milk and is warm-blooded. The twist? Milk is released through specialised skin patches rather than nipples, leaving the young to lap it up.Desktop Version
Jellyfish, Guerrero, Mexico
Jellyfish, Guerrero, Mexico
They don"t have brains, bones or even hearts, yet jellyfish have pulsed through Earth"s oceans for half a billion years. Don"t be fooled by the "fish" in their name: they belong to the invertebrate club called Cnidaria and they"re made up of about 95% water. With their bell-shaped bodies and trailing tentacles, they"re more like ocean drifters than deep-sea athletes. Some glow, like the one pictured here in the Pacific Ocean off Guerrero, Mexico, others pack stings and a select few, like the "immortal jellyfish," can reset their life cycle and start again.Desktop Version

Juvenile manatees in a freshwater spring, Crystal River, Florida
Manatees may seem slow and sleepy, but they have some surprising tricks under the surface. For starters, they are one of the few mammals that constantly replace their teeth. As old molars wear down from chewing gritty seagrass, new ones slowly roll forward like a conveyor belt—handy for an animal that eats for up to eight hours a day.Desktop Version
Martimoaapa Mire Reserve, Finland
Martimoaapa Mire Reserve, Finland
Today, we step into the Martimoaapa Mire Reserve in Finland, where wide, cold-climate wetlands and peatlands stretch across a landscape shaped over thousands of years. This reserve is more than just mires—it carries layers of history. During Finland"s Prohibition era (1919–1932), smugglers hauled sacks of liquor from Sweden across these bogs, following a "spirits" route that passed through Martimoaapa. Parts of that path can still be traced today. Imagine trekking with a heavy pack over soggy ground—would you have made it?Desktop Version
Least chipmunk
Least chipmunk
In the world of woodland critters, the least chipmunk might seem like the "under squirrel"—but don"t count it out. With survival smarts and turbo-charged feet, this tiny rodent proves that being "least" is no reason to squirrel away your potential. Weighing less than a deck of cards and measuring under 25 centimetres from nose to tail, this species is North America"s smallest chipmunk.Desktop Version

Common clownfish in a sea anemone, Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
Sea anemones may look like underwater flowers, but they"re actually animals—close relatives of jellyfish and corals. Anchored to rocks or reefs, they use a sticky base and a crown of waving tentacles armed with tiny stingers to capture passing prey. Those stings can paralyse small fish, yet one famous neighbour is immune.Desktop Version

Florida burrowing owlet, Cape Coral, Florida, United States
Owls are far more than the wide-eyed birds they appear to be. Found on every continent except Antarctica, they are known for forward-facing eyes, flat facial discs that channel sound and specialised hearing. Many species hunt in near silence thanks to soft-edged feathers. Their eyes remain fixed in their sockets, so they rely on remarkably flexible necks to scan their surroundings. From forests to deserts, owls inhabit a wide range of environments and play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance.Desktop Version
Colosseum, Rome, Italy
Colosseum, Rome, Italy
Think modern sports are dramatic? Ancient Romans had front-row seats to spectacles far more intense inside the Colosseum. Commissioned by the Flavian emperor Vespasian in 72 CE and finished by his son Titus in 80 CE, this amphitheatre broke tradition with its predecessors that were built into hillsides for natural support. Instead, the Colosseum was a fully free-standing architectural giant. Crafted from stone and concrete, its arches and vaults supported an arena that could host up to 50,000 spectators. Gladiators, exotic animals and even staged sea battles thrilled the crowds, while hidden lifts and trapdoors created sudden, dramatic appearances.Desktop Version
Seattle, Washington, United States
Seattle, Washington, United States
Seattle"s waterfront seems suspended between sea and sky as soft light settles on the horizon. Steep streets lead down to piers that sweep across Elliott Bay. Rising above the shoreline, the Space Needle stands out as the city"s most recognisable landmark. Seen from above, the uniform arcades and tiled rooftops of Plaza Mayor in Madrid—the capital of Spain—create a captivating architectural harmony. Once the site of a bustling market square known as the Plaza del Arrabal, this historic space has witnessed the city"s transformation over the centuries. The shift began in 1561, when the plaza came under Madrid"s jurisdiction after the royal court moved from Toledo. Inspired by a vision of order and grandeur, King Philip II reimagined the square—though construction did not actually begin until 1617, under the reign of Philip III.Desktop Version

Juvenile sunbittern displaying at nest, Ecuador
High in Ecuador"s cloud forests, a young sunbittern spreads its wings in an early display, casting flashes of orange, black and white through the filtered green light. The sudden contrast cuts through the moss‑covered branches and leaf‑shadowed understorey, offering a snapshot of the species" dramatic wing patterns. Adult sunbitterns most often show these bold markings during defensive displays, briefly transforming an elusive bird into a striking spectacle.Desktop Version

Koala, Australia
Amid the lush eucalyptus canopy of Great Otway National Park, koalas reign as sleepy sentinels of Australia"s wild soul. Mother manatee and calf
Mother manatee and calf
Manatees, featured in today"s image, are found in the warm coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon Basin and West Africa. They can weigh up to 550 kilograms, yet their diet is strictly vegetarian. These whiskered mammals are slow swimmers in a fast-paced world. They cruise at around 8 kilometres per hour—great for relaxing, not so great when speedboats come charging through. That"s why "no-wake zones," or sections of waterways with a strict speed limit, are there to keep manatees safe.Desktop Version
