Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Xwejni Bay in Gozo, Malta, has a way of making everyday elements look like a quiet choreography between sea, stone and sun. You can"t help but pause and look closer, right? Centuries back, families began carving these limestone pans, shaping hundreds of basins that trap seawater with each wave. Once the water settles in, the sun"s heat does the rest, slowly evaporating it into natural Mediterranean salt. Gozo became a salt-making hub because its limestone coast is easy to shape, and its warm, dry summers keep the crystallisation process steady. The first crystals form around May, marking the beginning of the harvesting season. Workers rake the salt by hand, sweep it with brooms and brushes, gather it into small piles to dry for another day, then bag it and store it in the caves.Desktop Version

Hay bales in North Yorkshire, England
Hay bales in North Yorkshire, England
"Make hay while the sun shines" may sound like an old proverb, but in farming it"s a practical truth. Hay baling plays a crucial role in agriculture worldwide. It involves cutting, drying and packaging grasses to feed livestock during the colder months. The process depends heavily on the weather: the grass must be dry before it"s baled, or it risks moulding. Farmers must act quickly once a dry spell arrives, making it a seasonal race.Desktop Version

Muir Woods National Monument, California, United States
Step into the realm of giants. Try embracing a BFG (Big Friendly Giant) as you wrap your arms around a thousand years of wisdom in a single tree trunk. Banff, Alberta, Canada
Banff, Alberta, Canada
Banff in Alberta, Canada, didn"t grow quietly. It arrived with railways, hot springs and a vision: to protect places of rare beauty. In 1883, railway workers stumbled upon warm mineral water bubbling from Sulphur Mountain—an unlikely surprise in the cold sweep of the Rockies. The discovery drew attention quickly. By 1885, the surrounding land has been set aside as a protected reserve. What did that lead to? The beginnings of Banff National Park, Canada"s first, and a blueprint the country would return to again and again.Desktop Version

While sunflowers come in shades of red, orange and maroon, it"s the classic yellow blooms with brown centres that are the most common.Desktop Version

Plains zebras, Etosha National Park, Namibia
Some animals whisper their way through the wild. Zebras don"t. They show up in high-contrast stripes, act like it"s the most practical outfit ever invented—and somehow, it is. These African equines come in three species. Plains zebras—featured in today"s image from Namibia"s Etosha National Park—wear bold stripes, mountain ones sport pinstripes, and Grévy"s go for the ultra-fine, designer look. No two patterns match, turning every individual into a walking fingerprint. Scientists believe those stripes help confuse predators, deter biting flies and even cool the body by creating tiny air currents.Desktop Version

Fortress of Palamidi, Nafplio, Greece

It was designed to slow movement, expose approach and reinforce control long before an enemy reached the gates.Desktop Version

Badwater Basin, Death Valley National Park, California, USA
Death Valley National Park challenges first impressions. The station orbits about 400 kilometres above Earth and circles the planet every 90 minutes, delivering up to 16 sunrises and sunsets each day.Desktop Version
African elephants
African elephants
Big ears, bigger hearts—elephants are more than just icons of the wild. These majestic giants roam freely across places like Amboseli National Park in Kenya, pictured here. What makes elephants so extraordinary isn"t just their size; it"s their minds. These animals have incredible memories. Matriarchs, the oldest females, can recall the locations of water sources from decades past, and they use that knowledge to lead their herds through tough times. Their social bonds run just as deep. Elephants live in close-knit families, mourn their dead and have even been observed comforting one another during hard times.Desktop Version
Millau Viaduct, France
Millau Viaduct, France
Above the Tarn Valley, the Millau Viaduct seems to brush the sky. At 343 metres, its highest pylons rise taller than the Eiffel Tower. At dawn, light mist often drifts between the hills of the Larzac plateau and Aveyron, wrapping steel and concrete in an almost unreal softness. From some viewpoints, the bridge can appear to float above the clouds rather than standing upon them.Desktop Version

Quiver trees, Namibia
Quiver trees, Namibia
Of all the plants on Earth, the quiver tree looks the most like a vision from the future. Found in Southern Africa, including parts of Namibia, these striking giants are not true trees but a species of aloe adapted to life under the desert"s scorching sun. Their thick trunks store water, while their branches reflect heat, helping them endure harsh conditions. Reaching up to 7 metres in height, with some living for more than 100 years, quiver trees are also vital to their ecosystem. They offer rare perches and nesting sites for birds in landscapes where few other trees exist.Desktop Version

This tiny Italian town is perched above the Val d"Orcia, surrounded by rolling hills that look exactly like you think Tuscany should: cypress trees, winding dirt roads, the occasional sheep. It"s peaceful. And then you step inside the town walls, and it gets clever.Desktop Version
