Tŵr Mawr lighthouse, seen in today"s image, isn"t just a striking white tower on Ynys Llanddwyn in Wales, United Kingdom—it"s got stories to tell. Built in 1873, this windmill-shaped beacon was designed to guide sailors through the tricky Menai Strait. Consider it an unsung hero of the 19th-century Welsh maritime life. As for Ynys Llanddwyn, it is not your average tidal island. One origin of the name "Hang Rai" or "Rai Cave" comes from otters (rai) that were occasionally seen seeking shelter in the cave. Spanning over 98,160 hectares, the park is divided into three main units: the North Unit, home to the visitor centre and scenic Badlands Loop Road; and the Stronghold and Palmer Creek units. A breathtaking maze of sandstone formations and awe-inspiring views awaits you at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, United States. People have lived in this area for at least 10,000 years, including the Anasazi, Pueblo and Paiute Peoples. The first European Americans arrived in the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and some eventually settled there in the 1850s. Jul 18, 2025Eucalyptus forest, Urubici, Santa Catarina, Brazil

Today"s image takes us to Santa Catarina in Brazil. This is a reforestation area where beauty and functionality share the same space. Tall, aligned and fast-growing, these trees are not native to the country — they came from Oceania, but took root here in the early 20th century. Eucalyptus is now one of the most planted species in the country, the basis for the production of paper, cellulose and charcoal. When well-managed, especially in already degraded areas, it can relieve pressure on native forests and favour soil recovery. However, in large areas, the continuous cultivation of eucalyptus can alter the local environment, affecting biodiversity and water dynamics.Desktop Version

Mar 24, 2025African elephants in Namibia

Desert elephants, found in Namibia and Mali, are African bush elephants that have adapted to the harsh conditions of the Namib and Sahara deserts. These extremely arid regions receive less than 7 centimetres of annual rainfall. Compared to other bush elephants, desert elephants have longer legs, broader feet and slightly smaller bodies. These resilient, herbivorous creatures migrate between waterholes, following ancient routes based on seasonal food and water availability. Male desert elephants often roam alone over vast areas, while female-led family groups stay near rivers, where food is more plentiful. Their incredible adaptability is showcased by their ability to travel long distances, sometimes almost 70 kilometres in a single night, to find their favourite myrrh bushes.Desktop Version

Apr 17, 2024Black bear cub emerges into spring

Welcome to the world, bear cub! After spending the first months of its life inside the den, this frizzy American black bear child may be puzzled by the outside world. Unlike albino birds, these hummingbirds retain some colour in their eyes. As winter approaches, the Anna"s hummingbird faces new challenges. With its lighter plumage offering little protection from predators like hawks and feral cats, these enchanting creatures navigate a perilous landscape.Desktop Version

Jun 3, 2024Bicycles in Copenhagen, Denmark

Bicycles are the best! An environmentally friendly form of transportation that is fun, good for your health, affordable, simple and durable. Once you learn to ride, you"ll never forget how to wheel around. Karl von Drais, a German inventor, is credited with developing the first two-wheeler, the "swiftwalker," in 1817. The machine certainly needed some further thinking, since the wooden frame and wheels didn"t have pedals. Pedals attached to the front wheel were first introduced in the early 1860s in Paris, and the name velocipede was soon replaced by bicycle. The modern versions of bikes were developed in the late 1800s, but the materials used for them are still constantly evolving to make the ride easier and more secure. So, hop on a bike to find your crew!Desktop Version
