Hay bales in North Yorkshire, England
Hay bales in North Yorkshire, England
"Make hay while the sun shines" may sound like an old proverb, but in farming it"s a practical truth. Hay baling plays a crucial role in agriculture worldwide. It involves cutting, drying and packaging grasses to feed livestock during the colder months. The process depends heavily on the weather: the grass must be dry before it"s baled, or it risks moulding. Farmers must act quickly once a dry spell arrives, making it a seasonal race.Desktop Version

Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Salt evaporation ponds on the island of Gozo, Malta
Xwejni Bay in Gozo, Malta, has a way of making everyday elements look like a quiet choreography between sea, stone and sun. You can"t help but pause and look closer, right? Centuries back, families began carving these limestone pans, shaping hundreds of basins that trap seawater with each wave. Once the water settles in, the sun"s heat does the rest, slowly evaporating it into natural Mediterranean salt. Gozo became a salt-making hub because its limestone coast is easy to shape, and its warm, dry summers keep the crystallisation process steady. The first crystals form around May, marking the beginning of the harvesting season. Workers rake the salt by hand, sweep it with brooms and brushes, gather it into small piles to dry for another day, then bag it and store it in the caves.Desktop Version
Saranac Lake, New York
Saranac Lake, New York
Some places are just stops on the map, but Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in New York, United States, is a destination that keeps people hooked year-round. Despite its name, this village isn"t directly on the Saranac Lakes themselves but rather on Lake Flower, a wide section of the Saranac River. For centuries, the area—nicknamed "The Capital of the Adirondacks"—was used by Indigenous peoples for hunting and travel. By the late 19th century, it gained fame as a health retreat, where Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau pioneered fresh-air treatment for tuberculosis. The cure cottages from that era still stand today.Desktop Version
Octopus cyanea
Octopus cyanea
Meet the master of disguise—the day octopus (Octopus cyanea). Found across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, from Hawaii in the United States to Africa"s eastern coast, this reef-dweller is a true shapeshifter. Unlike most of its kin, it hunts in broad daylight, instantly shifting its colour, pattern and even skin texture to blend into its surroundings. At times, it even performs a clever "passing clouds" act, casting a false shadow to trick crabs into moving at just the wrong moment. And once the trap is sprung, the hunter wastes no time. A skilled predator, this octopus prowls the reef for fish, crabs, prawns and molluscs. Smaller catches are devoured on the spot, while larger prey is dragged back to its den.Desktop Version

Blue walls of Chefchaouen, Morocco
Blue walls of Chefchaouen, Morocco
Chefchaouen, known as the "Blue Pearl" of the Rif Mountains, is one of the most atmospheric cities in Morocco. Its name comes from a blend of Arabic and Berber—Chef, derived from the Arabic word meaning "to look," and Echaouen, a Berber term for "horns"—together meaning "look at the horns," a reference to the two mountain peaks that rise above the town.Desktop Version
Whooper swans
Whooper swans
In Japan"s colder months, there"s a morning moment when stillness breaks—not with wind or footsteps, but with a bright, rolling call that sweeps across the water. Whooper swans have touched down. One loud whoop—and winter suddenly feels awake. These birds migrate from Siberia and the Russian Far East, choosing Japan as their seasonal home because its lakes offer what long-distance travellers crave: open water, steady food and a safe place to rest. One of their favourite destinations is Kotoku Pond in the Kantō region on Japan"s largest island.Desktop Version
Rufous hummingbird
Rufous hummingbird
They fly backward, dive-bomb rivals and travel farther than most road trippers. Meet the rufous hummingbird—photographed in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, in the United States. The bird, one of nine species in the genus Selasphorus, gets its name from its rusty, reddish-orange feathers. Males flash copper backs and red throat patches that shimmer in the sun. Females are more subdued but still carry streaks of rufous on their sides and tails.Desktop Version
Harbour seals
Harbour seals
Today"s image features harbour seals—also known as common seals—which are true pinnipeds distinguished by their lack of visible ear flaps. They are found in the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Baltic and North Seas, typically staying near coastlines, which is how they got their name. Adults can weigh almost 170 kilograms and reach lengths of up to 2 metres. They display a variety of colours, from white or silvery grey to black or dark brown, often marked with distinctive spots and V-shaped nasal openings.Desktop Version
Colourful beehives, Italy
Colourful beehives, Italy
About 35% of global food crop production relies on animal pollination, including honeybees. The value of crops pollinated by bees is estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars. Despite their superpowers, bees are in a sticky situation. Habitat loss, pesticides, disease and climate change are making life in the hive less than ideal. To protect them, humans created man-made beehives—structures designed to house a honeybee nest, allowing them to live safely. Within these hives, honeybees carry out their seasonal cycle—raising their young and producing honey.Desktop Version

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Vancouver Island, Canada
Spring break on Vancouver Island, Canada looks a little different. In Canada, people can witness the annual spring migration of thousands of grey whales as they pass close to the island"s west coast. Created by local communities in the 1980s, the Pacific Rim Whale Festival marks the whales" return north from breeding lagoons in Baja California, Mexico.Desktop Version
Papagayo Beach, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
Papagayo Beach, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
A beach born from fire rarely does so subtly, yet Papagayo Beach manages exactly that. The shoreline we see today rests on the southern edge of Lanzarote, one of Spain"s Canary Islands. Tropical fantasy? More like volcanic precision. Millions of years ago, this land rose in successive layers of basalt and ash thrust upward by submarine eruptions.Desktop Version
Lemon shark pup in mangrove forest, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Lemon shark pup in mangrove forest, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Sharks have patrolled the seas for more than 420 million years, and as apex predators, they help keep marine ecosystems in balance. The tiny explorer in today"s image—a lemon shark pup weaving through a mangrove forest in Eleuthera, the Bahamas—offers a perfect reminder that their stories don"t begin with drama but with nurseries and survival. Lemon sharks give birth to live young, and their pups spend years in shallow mangroves, where calm, sheltered waters provide a safe place to grow. As adults, they can reach about 3.4 metres in length and females often return to the same nursery sites to breed. Hunting mainly at night, they use specialised electroreceptors to detect prey hidden beneath sand or in murky water. They also benefit from living in groups, which can improve communication, courtship, hunting success and protection. Yet lemon sharks are considered near threatened, and sharks worldwide face growing pressure from overfishing, fear-driven killing and habitat loss.Desktop Version
Wood duck hen
Wood duck hen
The wood duck, pictured here, is one of the most colourful waterfowl in North America. Males dazzle with iridescent plumage, red eyes and a bold white flare down the neck, while females have a softer look, with grey-brown feathers, a white eye-ring and a pale throat. Both have a small crest on the head, and their wings show a blue-green patch edged in white.Desktop Version
Japanese tree frog in a pink morning glory
Japanese tree frog in a pink morning glory
Today, let"s hop into the world of one of nature"s smallest yet most hardworking ambassadors. Frogs may not wear crowns—unless you believe in Frog Kings—but they do rule quietly behind the scenes. By keeping insect populations in check, they help ecosystems stay balanced. Even more impressive? Their sensitive skin also means they react quickly to changes in their surroundings, which is why scientists often look at frogs to understand the health of wetlands and forests. Talk about living barometers.Desktop Version

Turtles with butterflies
Turtles with butterflies
Turtles are not only fascinating animals; they also play vital roles in nature. Sea turtles help keep seagrass beds and coral reefs healthy, while freshwater and land counterparts support balanced ecosystems. Their shells are part of their skeletons, formed from dozens of fused bones, and some species navigate using Earth"s magnetic field to return to the beaches where they hatched.Desktop Version
Thick-billed raven
Thick-billed raven
Perched high in the mountains of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, the thick-billed raven holds the title of the world"s largest raven. At more than 70 centimetres in length and weighing over a kilogram, it is about a quarter heavier than the common raven. Its enormous, arched bill—pale at the base and close to 8 centimetres long—is the largest among perching birds. These ravens live mostly between 1,500 and 3,400 metres above sea level, found across farmland, rocky cliffs and even rooftops in mountain towns.Desktop Version
Everglades National Park, Florida
Everglades National Park, Florida
On Florida"s southern tip lies one of the United States" most unusual landscapes. The Everglades is not a typical swamp or river. It is a slow, shallow sheet of water that drifts south across flat grasslands toward Florida Bay, linking forests, marshes, mangroves and coastal prairies. This subtropical wilderness supports hundreds of species, including alligators, manatees and the endangered Florida panther. On December 6, 1947, the United States established the Everglades National Park, protecting over 600,000 hectares and shifting conservation toward preserving entire ecosystems rather than isolated landmarks.Desktop Version
Tide pools in La Jolla, California, United States
Tide pools in La Jolla, California, United States
Not every science lesson requires a classroom. In La Jolla, California, tide pools teach you about ocean life—right at your feet. Along the rocky shoreline of this San Diego coastal neighbourhood, tide pools form during low tide as seawater gets trapped in natural depressions. These shallow pools form naturally along La Jolla"s rocky shorelines, especially near Windansea Beach, Shell Beach, South Casa Beach and Hospital Point. The water that remains trapped in sandstone and reef depressions creates habitats for everything from sea hares to brittle stars.Desktop Version

Rock River Falls, Michigan
Rock River Falls, Michigan
Nestled within Rock River Canyon Wilderness, in Michigan, United States, Rock River Falls emerges amid a landscape shaped by glaciers, dense woods and layers of history. In the Upper Peninsula, humans have left their traces for millennia: Indigenous Algonquian-speaking peoples were followed by French and British explorers and waves of Finnish, Swedish and French-Canadian immigrants settled there during the 19th-century mining and logging booms. Today, this sparsely populated region hosts barely 3% of Michigan"s residents, cradling its forests and waterfalls in near-natural serenity.Desktop Version

White Sands National Park, New Mexico, United States
If "Frozen" traded ice for sand, the result would look a lot like White Sands National Park in New Mexico, United States—cool, white dunes that deceive the eye at first glance. It was established to protect a rare geological phenomenon: the world"s largest gypsum dunefield. These dunes were formed from gypsum crystals that broke down over thousands of years, creating bright waves that stay cool even in summer.Desktop Version
