World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Penguins usually bring Antarctica to mind, but these endearing flightless seabirds don"t always follow the ice. On World Penguin Day, the Galápagos penguins pictured here offer a vivid counterpoint. Found only in the Galápagos Islands—a volcanic archipelago about 600 miles off Ecuador"s coast—this species lives farther north than any other penguin. Cool, nutrient‑rich ocean currents make this equatorial habitat possible by supplying food and keeping surrounding waters within survivable temperatures. Compact and agile, these birds spend much of the day in the water to stay cool.Desktop Version
Happy Juneteenth!
Happy Juneteenth!
Across the National Mall in Washington, DC, the National Museum of African American History and Culture rises with a striking bronze-colored exterior. Rosa Parks Day
Rosa Parks Day
Picture this: it"s 1955, a winter evening in Montgomery, Alabama. A seamstress heads home after work. The bus fills with other passengers. The driver demands she give up her seat. Rosa Parks wasn"t trying to make waves, but her refusal set off a chain reaction that would propel the civil rights movement into a new phase. Raised in rural Alabama, she grew up under segregation and later worked with the NAACP as a secretary and investigator, gathering testimony of racial violence and discrimination. By the time she declined to move, she was already a committed activist.Desktop Version

Arched iceberg, western Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean
Arched iceberg, western Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean
A sculpted arch of ice rises from the Southern Ocean along the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. This formation began as compacted snow that turned into glacial ice over thousands of years. Eventually, part of a glacier or floating ice shelf fractured and broke free—a process known as calving—creating a drifting iceberg.Desktop Version

Valensole—one of the largest plateaus in the region—lies in the Verdon Regional Natural Park between the Durance and Asse valleys, near the Gorges du Verdon and its lakes. From mid-June to early July, depending on altitude and weather, lavender and lavandin bloom and transform the landscape into one of Provence"s most recognizable sights. The air carries a sharp, dry, and unmistakably Mediterranean scent.Desktop Version
International Tiger Day
International Tiger Day
On International Tiger Day, this family moves through Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, India, with the confidence of those who know exactly where they stand in the food chain. These are Bengal tigers, built for both stealth and power: an adult can stretch over 10 feet from nose to tail and weigh around 500 pounds, yet walk without making a sound. Their stripes also play a part in a landscape where visibility is a double-edged sword, camouflaging their bodies in patterns that prey struggle to read.Desktop Version

Driftwood on Boneyard Beach, Hunting Island, South Carolina
At Boneyard Beach within Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, the first thing you notice is the trees. Then comes the question: why are bleached trunks and exposed roots scattered across the sand like a scene paused midway through collapse? Since the 1980s, Hunting Island has experienced major beach erosion, with some of the highest rates along the US East Coast—reaching up to 30 feet per year in certain areas.Desktop Version

Mont-Saint Michel during high tide, Normandy, France
Mont-Saint Michel during high tide, Normandy, France
At sunset, Mont-Saint Michel rises from the waters of Normandy, France, like a fortress shaped by the sea. Perched on a rocky tidal island, the abbey and village stand at the center of one of Europe"s most dramatic coastal settings. Twice a day, the sea retreats to reveal vast stretches of sand before surging back to reclaim the landscape. At high tide, the mount becomes an island once again. For centuries, travelers timed their journeys to this rhythm, crossing the flats when conditions allowed and watching the sea return hours later.Desktop Version
Pollinator Week
Pollinator Week
Zoom in on the small transaction that keeps landscapes alive: a butterfly on a yellow flower, sipping nectar. While it feeds, pollen dusts its body and hitches a ride to the next bloom—one of the quiet ways flowering plants reproduce. Pollinators are not only bees. Butterflies, birds, bats, beetles, and many others help move pollen, supporting wild plants and many of the fruits and vegetables we eat.Desktop Version

Highway through Xitai Jinaier Lake, Qinghai Province, China

Atlantic puffins, Wales
Atlantic puffins, Wales
Along the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, Atlantic puffins make their homes in burrows and cliffside crevices. These seabirds, with their black‑and‑white plumage and colorful beaks, are classified by the IUCN as vulnerable, as overfishing and changing ocean conditions reduce the availability of their prey. Each spring, they return to breed, laying a single egg in carefully dug burrows. Remarkable swimmers, they use their wings to "fly" underwater when hunting small fish such as herring and sand eels.Desktop Version
