Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
Short-beaked echidna, Adelaide Hills, Australia
An egg-laying mammal. No teeth. Reptilian gait. Built-in body armour. If the short-beaked echidna sounds like a checklist of contradictions, that"s because it is—and it owns it. Native to Australia, Tasmania and parts of New Guinea, it"s one of the few surviving monotremes, or mammals that lay eggs. Despite the headlines, it still qualifies as a mammal: it has fur, produces milk and is warm-blooded. The twist? Milk is released through specialised skin patches rather than nipples, leaving the young to lap it up.Desktop Version
Happy St. Patricks Day!
Happy St. Patricks Day!
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain around the late 4th or early 5th century. According to legend, at 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and brought to Ireland as a slave. After escaping, he returned home and later became a missionary, spreading Christianity across the island. He is famously associated, according to later tradition, with using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. His legacy of faith has made St. Patrick"s Day a global celebration.Desktop Version
World Rainforest Day
World Rainforest Day
22 June is World Rainforest Day, a global moment and a year-round call to protect the world"s remaining rainforests. These ecosystems aren"t just dots on the map. They thrive across the tropics and beyond yet cover only about 6% of Earth"s surface. Think of the Amazon in South America, the Congo Basin in Africa and the forests of Southeast Asia.Desktop Version
Shakespeare Day
Shakespeare Day
Each 23 April, the curtain rises on the life and legacy of William Shakespeare, a playwright whose words still command the world"s literary stage. Shakespeare Day commemorates the anniversary of his death in 1616 and the traditionally accepted date of his birth in 1564—a symbolic pairing that honours a writer whose works reshaped English literature. From the psychological depths of "Hamlet" to the enduring romance of "Romeo and Juliet," his language continues to echo through classrooms, theatres and everyday speech. His plays have been performed in numerous languages worldwide.Desktop Version

Everglades National Park, Florida, United States
What happens when water moves too slowly to notice? In Everglades National Park, it shapes everything. Covering around 6,100 square kilometres, the park was established in 1947 to protect a wetland system unlike any other in the United States. As a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park"s elevated pinelands rise above the marshes and prairies that form one of the world"s largest wetland systems.Desktop Version
International Day of Forests
International Day of Forests
If Earth had a maintenance crew, forests would be spearheading it. They absorb carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, safeguard biodiversity, influence rainfall and help maintain clean water supplies. They still cover about 31% of the world"s land area, yet their continued decline shows how vulnerable these natural systems have become. Vast stretches continue to be cleared for agriculture, infrastructure and resource extraction, weakening ecosystems at an alarming rate.Desktop Version

Tremola Road on the Saint Gotthard Pass in Airolo, Switzerland
Follow the glowing ribbon of switchbacks and you"ll find one of Switzerland"s most legendary drives: Tremola Road, the historic southern approach to the Saint Gotthard Pass, above Airolo. Built in the early 1800s and largely shaped by a 1951 reconstruction, this route is celebrated as Switzerland"s longest monument to historic road construction. Its showstopper stretch climbs about 300 metres in just 4 kilometres, curling through 24 named hairpin bends on granite cobblestones, with sturdy retaining walls edging the way. Overall, it runs about 11 kilometres and features 37 bends in total. Take it slow—every curve feels like a step back in time, trading speed for sweeping mountain scenery and big views towards the upper Leventina Valley. World Water Day
World Water Day
Today is World Water Day, declared by the UN in 1992 and first observed the following year. Humanity could no longer drift along—we had to safeguard the very currents that keep us alive. Few places capture that urgency like Lake Tanganyika, in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. From space, it"s a 676-kilometre ribbon linking Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. At the shoreline, it"s a 10-million-year-old rift basin, formed as the Earth"s crust slowly pulled apart.Desktop Version

The park reflects both conservation efforts and much older Indigenous connections, including those of the Nakoda and Secwépemc peoples. Its terrain ranges from glacier-fed rivers and alpine meadows to dense conifer forests dominated by spruce and pine.Desktop Version

Lupine flowers in bloom, Northern California, United States
As spring sweeps across Northern California in the United States, the landscape is transformed by the vibrant displays of lupine flowers in shades of blue, purple and white. Flourishing in the region"s Mediterranean climate, these wildflowers provide a vital source of nectar for pollinators such as bees, butterflies and beetles. With over 200 species found worldwide, lupines range from coastal varieties to those that thrive in mountain meadows. Beyond their striking beauty, lupines are essential to the ecosystem: by fixing nitrogen underground, they enrich soil fertility and support the growth of surrounding plants, even in nutrient-poor environments.Desktop Version

World Heritage Day
World Heritage Day
Today, on World Heritage Day, attention turns to places that tell humanity"s shared story—protected for their exceptional cultural or natural value. One of them rises from volcanic stone on Easter Island, Chile. At Rano Raraku, the slopes of an extinct volcano became the workshop where nearly all of the island"s famous moai were carved. The image captures this remarkable quarry, where half-finished figures emerge from the rock, frozen mid-creation.Desktop Version

Khairul Manazil, New Delhi
Khairul Manazil, New Delhi
Delhi has no shortage of monuments built by emperors. But opposite Purana Qila stands one that tells a different story. Built in 1561–62, Khairul Manazil was commissioned by Maham Anga, Emperor Akbar"s powerful foster mother and wet nurse. Its name, meaning "the most auspicious of houses," has a clever hidden detail. The Persian letters of Khairul Manazil form a chronogram corresponding to 969 AH, the Islamic calendar year of its completion.Desktop Version
International Museum Day
International Museum Day
You walk into a museum, and suddenly time shifts. A fossil hints at life millions of years ago. A gemstone reflects geological change you can"t see. That sense of connection is exactly what International Museum Day, created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, aims to celebrate.Desktop Version
European hedgehog, France
European hedgehog, France
Spring arrives with a small, spiky ambassador: the European hedgehog, spotted here in France. Part cuddle, part survival gear, this tiny forager is mostly nocturnal and usually solitary, guided mainly by smell and sound. Its job description is simple: roam, sniff through leaf litter and vacuum up invertebrates like worms, beetles, slugs and caterpillars—the kind of snacks that keep ecosystems running and gardeners smiling. When danger shows up, it doesn"t negotiate or flee. It curls into a tight ball and lets its spines do the talking.Desktop Version
World Penguin Day
World Penguin Day
Penguins usually bring Antarctica to mind, but these endearing flightless seabirds don"t always follow the ice. On World Penguin Day, the Galápagos penguins pictured here offer a vivid counterpoint. Found only in the Galápagos Islands—a volcanic archipelago more than 950 kilometres off Ecuador"s coast—this species lives farther north than any other penguin. Cool, nutrient‑rich ocean currents make this equatorial habitat possible by supplying food and keeping surrounding waters within survivable temperatures. Compact and agile, these birds spend much of the day in the water to stay cool.Desktop Version

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States
