International Whale Shark Day
International Whale Shark Day
If you"ve never seen an over- 10-metre, polka-dotted fish gliding past coral reefs, you are missing out. Today is International Whale Shark Day, a reminder that these slow-motion giants need our attention. First observed in 2008, the day is used by researchers and marine advocates to spotlight conservation efforts and threats like vessel strikes, plastic pollution and unregulated tourism. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea, but don"t let the word "shark" fool you. They"re plankton-eating giants with no interest in humans. Found in warm waters from the Maldives and Mozambique to Mexico"s Yucatán coast, they often show up in food-rich, calm waters. Their mouths can stretch over a metre wide, but they feed by suction, not biting.Desktop Version

Juvenile manatees, Crystal River, Florida, United States
Manatees may seem slow and sleepy, but they have some surprising tricks under the surface. For starters, they are one of the few mammals that constantly replace their teeth. As old molars wear down from chewing gritty seagrass, new ones slowly roll forward like a conveyor belt—handy for an animal that eats for up to eight hours a day.Desktop Version

Night view of the RMS Queen Mary, Long Beach, California, United States
She was never meant to fade away. When the RMS Queen Mary sailed in 1936, she stole the spotlight across the Atlantic—an Art Deco liner that broke speed records and carried celebrities, royalty and dignitaries. War transformed her from a floating palace into the "Grey Ghost," stripped of luxury and loaded with Allied troops. In 1967, after 30 years at sea, she retired to Long Beach, in California, United States, where her decks now serve as hotel corridors, guided exhibits and a living monument to maritime history.Desktop Version
Poinsettia: A winter classic
Poinsettia: A winter classic
Some plants simply sit quietly on windowsills. The poinsettia? It demands the spotlight — bright, bold and as red as Rudolph"s nose. Long before it became a popular Christmas decoration, it grew wild in Mexico, where the Aztecs used its leaves for dyes and its sap for traditional remedies. In the 19th century, it travelled across continents as people admired its vivid colour during colder months, eventually finding its place in winter celebrations around the world.Desktop Version

Stretching more than 700 kilometres from north to south and covering about 52,000 square kilometres, the valley is one of the world"s most productive agricultural regions. In early spring, however, an older identity briefly resurfaces. From March through April, native annuals such as goldfields, tidy tips and owl"s clover quickly germinate once temperature and soil moisture are optimal. They race to complete their life cycles before the long dry season begins.Desktop Version
