Tucked away in the Adirondack High Peaks in New York, United States, this less-than-a-square-kilometres alpine lake sits at over 800 metres between Mount Colden and Avalanche Mountain. Village of Oia in Santorini, Greece
Village of Oia in Santorini, Greece
Ever wondered what it"s like to live on a movie set? Oia is about as close as it gets, part of Greece"s Santorini archipelago. This village has appeared in films like "The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" and "Tomb Raider," thanks to its Cycladic houses—cube-shaped homes with flat roofs—and cliffside views that feel almost unreal. Its unique architecture has roots in the late 19th century. Sailors and merchants carved houses right into the volcanic cliffs—cool in summer and warm in winter. The white-and-blue theme is also more than just for show: houses were painted with lime wash so rainwater would run off and be collected. Today, visitors wander its cobbled lanes, explore the Naval Maritime Museum or climb to the ruins of Agios Nikolaos Castle for unforgettable sunsets.Desktop Version

Siblings Day
Siblings Day
Ever caught siblings plotting? In Karula National Park, Estonia, it looks as though these two red fox kits froze mid-conspiracy, their expressions mirrored in curiosity and caution. They"re not just springtime fluff; they"re apprentices in survival. Born in litters averaging four to six kits, foxes grow quickly, their underground den becoming their wrestling ring, classroom, and testing ground. Older kits often help feed, guard, and teach the younger ones, turning play into practice and mischief into muscle memory. In their families, siblings are not background—they"re backup.Desktop Version
Reindeer, Lapland, Finland
Reindeer, Lapland, Finland
Few creatures evoke the magic of the holidays quite like the reindeer. Also known as caribou, they are the spirit animals of Christmas lovers—and they rock it. Sturdy and sure-footed, they"ve been pulling Santa"s sleigh ever since Clement Clarke Moore cast them in the role in his 1823 poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas." And they were born for it. Their hooves shrink in winter to expose a gripping rim, then expand in warmer months for better traction. Still not impressed? Consider this: reindeer don"t have an internal clock. Instead, their melatonin—the hormone that regulates sleep—adjusts to light and darkness, helping them stay awake through endless nights of gift delivery.Desktop Version

Sea otters, Prince William Sound, Alaska, United States
Sea otters, Prince William Sound, Alaska, United States
Think sea otters are just about whiskers and floating naps? There"s much more behind those button eyes. In Prince William Sound, in Alaska, United States, they drift on ice or crack shellfish on their bellies with a favourite rock, as seen in today"s image. Less obvious is how their taste for sea urchins helps protect kelp forests. Otters also depend on clean, cold water—their fur traps air for warmth rather than repelling water, making them highly vulnerable to oil spills.Desktop Version

International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day
Read it and believe it—literacy changes everything. As a basic human right, literacy is a powerful tool that opens the door to greater freedoms and active global citizenship. India"s National Literacy Mission sees literacy as more than just knowing how to read, write and do basic arithmetic—it"s about putting those skills to work in everyday life. Functional literacy means understanding the causes of deprivation and working to change them. It involves gaining skills to improve one"s economic status and overall well-being. Recognising its far-reaching impact, International Literacy Day—observed each year on September 8 since 1967—serves as a reminder of how vital literacy is in building a better, more sustainable future for all. This year, the theme explores literacy in a digital age, where technology continues to reshape how people learn, communicate and participate in society.Desktop Version

J.R.R. Tolkien Day
Our picture of the day takes us to the Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen, where the Staubbach Falls shimmers in the distance beyond a quiet alpine valley. This is the landscape a young traveller, J.R.R. Its soaring cliffs, silver waterfalls and crisp mountain air left a lasting impression and are believed to have inspired his vision of Rivendell, the elven refuge hidden deep in Middle-earth.Desktop Version
