World Lake Day  Aug 27, 2026

Imagine a world without the natural wonders that contain about 90% of Earth"s surface freshwater. Lakes provide drinking water, support wildlife, help regulate climate and sustain communities around the globe. In recognition of their vital role, the United Nations designated 27 August as World Lake Day, first observed in 2025. The observance has particular relevance for Canadians, as Canada is home to more than two million lakes that shape its landscapes, ecosystems, recreation and freshwater resources. Protecting them is increasingly important as pollution, overuse and climate change put pressure on many lake environments.
