Oct 15, 2024Great wildebeest migration at Mara River, Kenya

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, and no one takes that more literally than the wildebeests of the Serengeti in Tanzania. Every July, roughly 2 million of these determined grazers, along with zebras and other herbivores, set off on a journey to the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of lush pastures and fresh water. The great migration, considered one of the seven wonders of the natural world, is a safari spectacle where survival is the prize. One of the most dramatic moments of the migration is the crossing of the Mara River. Thousands of wildebeests gather at the riverbank, aware that danger lurks beneath the surface—the crocodiles—not to mention the lions and leopards that patrol the banks.Desktop Version

Mar 11, 2024Koala sleeping in a eucalyptus tree

Take a cue from today"s image; this sleepy koala may inspire you to catch some Z"s. Despite being commonly called "koala bears," the koala is not a bear. Koalas are marsupials, a type of mammal that carries and nurses their young offspring in a pouch. These adorable Australian marsupials can sleep up to 20 hours a day, which helps them conserve the little energy they get from their eucalyptus-based diet. Koalas move slowly when awake, spend most of their time tucked into nooks in trees, and have a lower body temperature than other animals of their size. Koalas are herbivores and their diet consists exclusively of eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are very fibrous and difficult to digest, but koalas have a specialised digestive system that allows them to break down the tough cellulose in the leaves.Desktop Version

Nov 27, 2023Río Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil

The Río Negro, originating in Colombia, is one of dozens of tributaries that flow into the massive Amazon River. Its name, which means black river, comes from its dark appearance when viewed from a distance. As a result, the water can reflect the colourful hues of the sky overhead, such as the vibrant blue and partial rainbow seen here. The colour of the river comes from the high concentration of humic acid, thanks to decomposing organic matter that seeps from nearby swamps. As one of the largest northern-bank tributaries of the Amazon River, the Río Negro plays a crucial role in the complex Amazon basin ecosystem. The river is home to many plants and animals, including the critically endangered Brazilian barefaced tamarin, the giant river otter and nearly 700 species of fish.Desktop Version

In 2003, Starbucks introduced a seasonal hit, the pumpkin spice latte, a drink made with pumpkin spice, steamed milk, espresso and other spices. Pumpkins and squashes can be used to create dishes such as squash soups, pumpkin pie and squash risottos. These apex predators live and hunt on Arctic Sea ice. Their prey largely consists of seals, but they have been known to eat beluga whales, reindeer and other Arctic animals. The cubs are protected by their mothers in their dens, as this is the most vulnerable time in a polar bear"s life. Let’s strive to conserve this precious species, more so in such times of rising global warming.Desktop Version
