Lava flows spill into the ocean on Big Island, Hawaii
Most landscapes change over thousands of years. Volcanoes can reshape them in a matter of hours, and on Hawaii"s Big Island, they continue to do just that. Recognising the scientific and natural importance of this ever-changing environment, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established in 1916. For more than a century, it has protected more than 1,430 square kilometres of volcanic terrain, native forests and rare wildlife.Desktop Version

A group of elephants, Amboseli National Park, Kenya
A line of elephants emerges from the morning haze, calves keeping pace beside older relatives as they head towards a marsh. In Amboseli National Park, scenes like this unfold every day, shaped by water hidden beneath the ground. Meltwater from Mount Kilimanjaro filters through volcanic rock before surfacing as springs that keep the park"s wetlands alive, even when the surrounding plains are dry. These permanent water sources sustain elephants, buffaloes, hippos and many other animals, while acacia woodland and open grassland support predators such as lions and cheetahs.Desktop Version
Steinhaldenfeld, Neckar valley, Germany
Steinhaldenfeld, Neckar valley, Germany
Forget rolling vineyards—around Stuttgart in Germany, the vines take the uphill route, climbing steep terraces above the Neckar valley and weaving between dry-stone walls. These vineyards are a defining feature of the city"s landscape, with some of the steepest plots requiring extensive handwork because machinery is difficult to use. Local winegrowers, known as Wengerter, tend the vines on slopes that can reach gradients of 50 per cent. Traditional varieties such as Trollinger and Riesling are closely associated with the region and remain widely grown today.Desktop Version

Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Some places are built for a single purpose; others keep reinventing themselves. Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois, United States, falls into the second category. Antelope Canyon, east of Page, Arizona, United States
The geological building blocks beneath our feet encourage curiosity about how rocks shape the Earth"s landscapes and history. Few places display that story as vividly as Antelope Canyon, a narrow slot canyon on Navajo Nation land, east of Page, Arizona. Carved from Navajo Sandstone by flash floods and erosion, its walls reveal how water and sediment sculpt rock over time.Desktop Version
Wildlife crossing near Zakrzów, Poland
Wildlife crossing near Zakrzów, Poland
Roads have made travel faster for people but created new challenges for wildlife. Highways often cut across their regular migration routes, increasing collisions, fragmenting habitats and isolating animal populations. Wildlife crossings, also known as ecoducts, were developed to reconnect these landscapes. They include vegetated bridges over roads and tunnels beneath them, allowing animals to cross safely while reducing the risk of vehicle collisions. Some of the earliest modern examples appeared in France during the 1950s, while the Netherlands later expanded the idea with wide, green bridges designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.Desktop Version

Vai, Crete, Greece
Vai, Crete, Greece
On the remote northeastern tip of Crete, Greece, lies a quiet corner far from typical tourist routes. Auroras over Kirkjufell, Iceland
As darker nights return to Iceland, visitors will soon look to the skies for a chance to see the aurora borealis. Whale shark and golden trevally, West Papua, Indonesia
Imagine coming face to face with a fish the size of a bus. The whale shark is the world"s largest fish, yet it is a remarkably gentle giant. Despite its name, it is not a whale but a shark, with the biggest confirmed individuals measuring around 18 metres long and weighing more than 20 tonnes. Found in warm tropical and subtropical seas, whale sharks move slowly through the water with their mouths open, filtering plankton, fish eggs and other tiny prey. Their distinctive white spots and stripes form patterns unique to each individual, allowing researchers to identify and track them over time.Desktop Version

Château de Castelnaud overlooking the river Dordogne, France
Château de Castelnaud overlooking the river Dordogne, France
Castles usually come with towers, walls and at least one dramatic story. Château de Castelnaud in France has plenty of all three, plus medieval weapons. Rising around 150 metres above the Dordogne Valley, this 13th-century fortress commands views towards Château de Beynac and Périgord Noir. Its story is anything but quiet. During the Hundred Years" War, Castelnaud changed allegiance several times before French forces captured it after a three-week siege in 1442. Centuries later, the neglected fortress was used as a stone quarry before restoration began in 1965.Desktop Version

Mont-Saint Michel during high tide, Normandy, France
Mont-Saint Michel during high tide, Normandy, France
At sunset, Mont-Saint Michel rises from the waters of Normandy, France, like a fortress shaped by the sea. Perched on a rocky tidal island, the abbey and village stand at the centre of one of Europe"s most dramatic coastal settings. Twice a day, the sea retreats to reveal vast stretches of sand before surging back to reclaim the landscape. At high tide, the mount becomes an island once again. For centuries, travellers timed their journeys to this rhythm, crossing the flats when conditions allowed and watching the sea return hours later.Desktop Version
Medieval Aqueduct, Perugia, Italy
Medieval Aqueduct, Perugia, Italy
Perugia has a walkway with a story beneath every step: its medieval aqueduct. Construction began in 1254, and by around 1280, the aqueduct was carrying water from Monte Pacciano to the Fontana Maggiore in the city centre. The clever bit? Engineers found a way to make the water flow uphill. Using a pressurised conduit, the system overcame the city"s steep terrain—an impressive feat of medieval engineering.Desktop Version
