Letters Square Roundabout, Manaus, Brazil
Letters Square Roundabout, Manaus, Brazil
Amid the fast-paced traffic of Manaus, in Amazonas, Brazil, there"s a point where meaning dissolves. Seen from above, the image appears to show a roundabout like any other. But in its centre rests an unusual sculpture: gigantic steel letters intertwined in a knot. Created by artist Sérgio Cardoso in 2003, the work arrived before the roundabout itself—traffic circled around it before any road planning. Made of stainless steel and about 4 metres tall, its original name, "Diálogo," never stuck. For residents, it was always "Bola das Letras." And so, it remained: a spontaneous nickname, a reference that slipped out of control and became part of the urban landscape. Today, few remember the official title—or even the name of the roundabout.Desktop Version

Yellow warbler in Canada
Yellow warbler in Canada
Yellow warbler—featured in today"s image—is a tiny songbird that brightens the landscape with its vibrant colour. Hopping from branch to branch, it spends its days feasting on insects like caterpillars and beetles. These birds thrive in wetlands, woodlands and gardens, making their homes in shrubs and small trees. During the breeding season, males turn into tireless singers, hoping to win a mate with their sweet tunes. When it"s time to nest, females carefully weave small cup-shaped homes from grass, plant fibres and feathers, ensuring a cosy spot for their eggs. But here"s something impressive—yellow warblers won"t tolerate freeloaders. If a brown-headed cowbird sneaks an egg into their nest, these clever birds simply build a new layer over it, protecting their own offspring. As summer ends, they embark on a journey south to Central and South America, spending the colder months basking in warmer climates before returning.Desktop Version

Legend has it that Dwynwen, a princess in the 5th century, sought solace on this island after a tragic love story. She dedicated her life to spirituality, living as a hermit and helping others with matters of the heart. The remains of Dwynwen"s church, a well and the ruins of a convent are testaments to her legacy on Ynys Llanddwyn.Desktop Version

Sea otter, Alaska, USA
The otter featured in today"s image was photographed in Prince William Sound, Alaska, United States. Sea otters are native to the northern and eastern coasts of the North Pacific Ocean. Weighing 14 to 45 kilograms, they"re expert foragers, diving to the seabed to find food. These clever critters are smart as well as cute: they use rocks to crack open shellfish, making them one of the few animals that use tools. There used to be as many as 300,000 in the wild, but they were heavily hunted for almost two centuries, as their dense fur was highly prized. By 1911, it is thought that only around 2,000 were left. Thankfully, an international hunting ban, conservation efforts, and reintroduction programs have helped them rebound, and they are now found in about two-thirds of their historic habitat. So, whenever you see their fuzzy heads bobbing in the waves, remember, you"re witnessing a story of nature"s triumph.Desktop Version
