Gentoo penguins, Antarctica
At first glance, all penguins might look similar but gentoo penguins are a species of penguin that are distinguished by the white feathers that rise from above their eyes and extend across the top of their heads. Nestled in the rocky landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic islands, gentoo penguin hatchlings, born in pairs, witness an intricate tale of dedication from their parents. The father and mother raise them in a bonded, monogamous pair, bringing food back to the stony nest they have built together. After being fed and raised for 30 days, the chicks join a crèche or nursery for safety and to learn social behaviour.

Nestled amidst the Julian Alps is the Lake Bled in Slovenia, inviting you to step into a storybook setting. The star of the show? A tiny island called Bled Island that beckons with the allure of legends and "rowmance." Hop on a traditional pletna boat and make your way to this island sanctuary. These flat-bottomed boats are unique to Bled, and only 23 boats navigate the lake, piloted by skilled oarsmen whose profession has been handed down through generations since 1740. The island is home to the 17th-century Assumption of Mary Church, which hosts a special bell that legend says will make wishes come true! French River, Ontario, Canada
The French River, which flows through Ontario, Canada, is known for its natural beauty and rich history. A pivotal route for Indigenous peoples and explorers, this river played a crucial role in the fur trade era around 1615. In the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabe, the river witnessed voyagers navigate its challenging waters. Designated as a Canadian Heritage River in 1986, this river covers a distance of 110 kilometres. The river became a victim of overfishing, and in 1994, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources implemented firm measures to protect the fish. The surrounding French River Provincial Park offers opportunities for responsible fishing, hiking and camping. The river"s rapids and waterfalls contribute to its appeal, while its surrounding forest provides habitat for various species including moose, beavers, otters, bald eagles and turtles.

Sea otter, Glacier Bay, Alaska
It"s hard not to smile when you spot a sea otter. Their whiskery faces, busy paws and thick fur give the impression of a stuffed animal that has come to life and taken to the ocean. These heaviest members of the weasel family aren"t just cute though, they also play a vital role in the kelp forest ecosystem, keeping the destructive sea urchin population in check. Unfortunately, their populations, which once numbered as high as 300,000, dropped to fewer than 2,000 after widespread hunting. International protections were put into place in 1911 and numbers have rebounded to around 125,000, but they still remain endangered. While some habitats never recovered, others have emerged in entirely new locations, such as Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. In 1995, five sea otters were spotted in Glacier Bay, and today there are over 8,000 that hunt, play and raise pups in the kelp-abundant waters.

Splügen Pass, Switzerland
With their twists and turns, record heights and breathtaking vistas, mountain roads like Umling La and Pico de Veleta are steeped in history. One such route of the Lepontine Alps—Splügen Pass—is pictured here today. Located on the border of Switzerland and Italy, the 2114-metre-high pass is one of the highest paved roads in Europe. Although its modern form was built between 1818-1823, the Splügen Pass is rich in history with links to Roman times. The pass has been much quieter since the nearby San Bernardino road tunnel opened in 1967. The now quiet pass, which has 51 marked hairpin bends, remains closed during winter. So, if spectacular mountainside views and picturesque lakes tickle your fancy, you can enjoy this ascent between June and mid-October. Has your interest in a Swiss-sational time "peaked" yet?

Przewalskis horses, Hustai National Park, Mongolia
The Hustai National Park in Mongolia is home to a very special and rare breed of horse, Przewalski"s horse. This equine species, which is regarded as the only truly pure wild horse today, is easily recognised by its pale yellowish-brown coat, a short, stiff mane and short legs. The Przewalski"s horse, also called "takhi" in Mongolia, was once extinct in the wild but has been successfully reintroduced through conservation efforts in the 1990s. An interesting fact about these horses is that they have 66 chromosomes, compared to 64 in domestic horses. Remarkably, Przewalski"s horses can mate with domestic horses to produce hybrids. These hybrids have 65 chromosomes and can breed and have their own offspring.
