Sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of the North,’ Bruges has numerous canals that once fueled the historic city’s shipping economy. Jan van Eyckplein is named for the influential 15th-century Belgian painter, Jan van Eyck. A statue of him stands in the middle of the square.
